'lhisinyentiion lie latesln i ainly to ,combined match-holders and ash-receivers, andyalso to" an improved cover for an ash-receiver, provided w th a cigan-quencher.
strips slitted to form match stems, which are separately provided with striking heads, the strips being secured to one another at their bases, and the whole being enclosed in a flexible paper wrapper having a large end for the match-heads and a small end within which are confined the attached base pr tions of the strips; the whole usually forming a unit thick at one end and thin at the other end. and its sides being provided with prepared match-striking surfaces.
An object of the invention is to provide means for safely holding such match-packets upon a smokers utensil, so that thentensil and packet can be served together .to a guest or other user, and to ettectthis result in a simple and inexpensive'manner, and produce an attractive device. i
Other teatures'and advantages will hereinafter appear. i
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan showing the packet clipped between the ash bowl and tray, and
'30 also showing theimproved cover upon the bowl. I I
Figure 2 shows in sectional elevationthe cover for the ash receiver or bowl. Figure 3 is a part sectional elevationof the devices seen at Figure 1.
A broad-bottoined ash-receiving bowl is mounted upon the bottom llof an asha tray 12 by means of a shortened pedestal 13,"
to leave a narrow opening 14lbetween the 4 toward the center of the tray, thereby ob' taininga pinching grip upon the packet, which holdsit from becoming accidentally loosened. The brim 19 of the ash-tray rises considerably above the level of the bottom of the ash-receiving bowl 10, and the outer Safety" matches are commonly supplied to smokers in the form of cardboard or paper,
tray and the bowl. The broad bottom of the,
GIICl OTE the packet 17 is fiexed up a little (Figure 3) when inserted in the clip, the inner endoi' th'elpaclret being thrustinaboutl hu k}zontally between the bottom: oftheltray and the 'bottonrof the ash-receivingbowl,
I and the, outer end of the packet being di rected upwardly and outwardly over' the aacon nnnnnn, or nARTsnAnE, nEwYonx.
brim 19 of the ash-tray upon which it rests.
The short pedestal 13 is preferably depressed from the bottom of the bowl by pressing down the central portion thereof, and this pedestal may be soldered or riveted or otherwise secured directly upon the floor of the ash-tray, preferably centrally thereof, thettray and bowl being preferably circular. The height of the pedestal maybe substantially equal to or a little less than the thickness of the thin end'of the packet, say about one-eighth of an inch, so that the packet when thrust into this annular clip may be pinched and held thereby. Q
There is also disclosed a cover 20 for the ash-bowl, which may be formed in one piece I of sheet-metal, and upon which vmay be pivoted at 21 a single combined cigar-rest and cigar-extinguisher 22, the same being mounted at one side of the cover, and having an opening 28 for ashesextending from said I I ciga'neXtinguisher across the cover substantially to the other side thereof, so that the entire width of the cover filled by the opening and the cigar-extinguishen The extinguisher is provided at its outer'end with a finger-piece 251, which is depressible to raise the inner end of the extinguisher, to permit the cigar to be inserted under the same,
whereupon the extinguisher can be pressed down to pinch the cigar against the top of the ash-receiver. weighted sidesf25 extending down through said cover 20. To retain the cover, it may be providedwith a pendent annular flange 26, fitting within the brim 27 of the bowl.
Variations may beresorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: I
1. A clip for a flexible packet of the described matches, comprising an ash-receiving bowl having a broad bottonn'an ash tray, and a pedestal connecting said tray to said bowl, with the tray in close proximity to the bottherewith to clip firmly the thin end of the described flexible packet thrust betweenthe bowlv and the-ashtray. v r a i 2. A clip for a flexible packet of the de- The extinguisher has tom of the ash-receiving bowl and coacting scribed matches, comprising an ash-receiving bowl having a broad bottom, an ash tray, and a pedestal connecting said tray to said bowl, with the tray in close proximity to the bottom of the ash-receiving bowl and coacting therewith to clip firmly the thin end'of the described flexible packet thrust between the bowl and the ash-tray, said ash-tray having a brim rising above the bottomof the bowl and flexing the match-packet upwardly, to increase the grip of the tray and bowl upon the packet.
3. A clip for a flexible packet-of the described matches, comprising an ash-receiving bowl havinga broad bottom, an ash tray, and a pedestal connecting said tray to said bowl, with the :tray inclose proximity-to the bottom of the ash-receiving bowl and coacting therewith to clip firmly the thin end of the described flexible packet thrust between the bowl and the ash-tray, said pedestal in the form of a depression in the bottom of the bowl and firmly secured to the ash-tray.
