ACCESSORY FOR USE IN CO'NNECTION WITH HAIR WAVING 0R CURLING APPLIANCES Filed Jan. 14, 1927 Patented July 26, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BLA. MAXIMILIAN RAY, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
ACCESSORY FOR USE IN CONNECTION WITH HAIR WAVING OR CURLING APPLIANCES.
Application led January 14, 1927, Serial No. 161,139, and in Great Britain December 17, 1926.
This invention relates to an accessory for use in connection with permanent hair-waving or curling appliances. The object of the present invention is to provide a device for use with hair-waving or curling appliances employing steam, for the purpose ot isolat ing a tress of hair to facilitate treatment thereof and at the same time provide means to prevent steam or hot condensate, which escapes or issues from the waving or curling appliance, from reaching the scalp and neighbouring hair, thereby eliminating the unpleasant sensation due to the steam coming into contact with the scalp.
Broadly, the invention comprises a shield ot rubber or other material impervious to steam and moisture, having au apertured nipple through which the tress is passed prior to being bound round the Waver or curler. said shield being adapted to surround and close the lower `portion oit the waving or curling appliance so as to trap steam or het condensate escaping or issuing theretrom. The aperturcd nipple, preferably centrally disposed. on the shield. is constructed of rubber or other material of a compressible nature so that the aperture may be closed in steam-tight manner around the hair drawn therethrough. Such closure of the aperture is conveniently effected by binding the compressible nipple close to the lower end of the waver or curler around which the hair is bound, by means of string or the equivalent, but preferably by employing a clip which enables the intensity of pressure upon said nipple to be varied, according to the amount and nature of the hair within the aperture thereof. After treating the hair around the Waver or curler in known manner to prevent direct contact of dry hair with steam, the lower barrel or tubular end of a waving or curling appliance is made to enclose the Waver or curler with the hair bound therearound. The outer parts of the shield are then gathered round the outside of the lower barrel or tubular end of the Waving or curling appliance, being retained in position by a rubber ring or the equivalent, so that steam or hot condensate is trapped in the shield and prevented from reaching the scalp. Auxiliary shields or pads of felt or other suitable material may be employed in addition to the rubber shield so that the rubber shield, when it becomes hot, does not irritate the head.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, reference is directed to the accompanying sheet of drawings, where- 1n Figure l is a p`ctorial view of the shield constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view showing the manner of using same; and,
Figures 3 and l are pictorial views of two kinds of clips suitable tor use in association with the shield, the former kind being adapted to embrace both the nipple and the lower end of the Waver or curler, whilst the latter grips the nipple only, being secured to the vaver or curler by string or the like; and,
Figure 5 is a fragment-ary sectional view of a modified nipple.
Referring to the drawings, the shield l of rubber or other suit-able material has solutioned or otherwise aiiixed to the centre thereof, a nipple 2 of rubber or other co1n pressible material having an aperture 3 therethrough. lf desired, the apertured nipple may be integral with the shield.
in use, a tress oi' haii` 4t is isolated from the remainder of the hair and passed up through the aperture 3 in the nipple 2, this being conveniently done by looping the end of the tref's and drawing it through by means of a hair-pin or other hooked member. waver or curler 5 is placed adjacent to the nipple 2 and the tress 4l bound around it as illustrated. A steam-tight closure at the aperture 3 is made by compressing or constricting the nipple 2, the simplest manner of effecting this heilig shown in Figure 2, where a lenoth of string 6 engages with the lower bifurcated end of the waver or curler 5, and is passed round the narrowed neck portion of the nipple 2. Figure 3 shows a convenient form oi clip vfor the same purpose. This clip comprises a vband 7 of springy materiahthe free ends 8, 9 ot' which are bent or shaped to form ingrer-pieces. The ends 8, 9 may be drawn together so as to adjust the bore of the clip and so intensify the pressure on the enclosed nipple 2. Adjustment is effected by a hooked member l0 hingedly mounted on the end 8 and adapted to engage with one pair of a series of teeth or spaced projections 11 on the end 9. An alternative form of clip is illustrated in Figure 4, wherein a length of wi 1e is bent to substantially V-shape, being provided with a looped end 12 which tends to keep the The 7 limbs 13, 14 Wide apart. A ring 15 is threaded on the hooked outer end of the limb 13 and is adapted to swing round and retain the limb 14 in close proximity to the limb 13, between which limbs the apertured nipple 2 with the tress passing therethrough' is gripped.` The clip is secured to the lower end ol the waver or curler 5 by string or the equivalent. To avoid `direct Contact of the steam with the dry hair, the hair is saturated *withv any suitable liquid or a protective wrapping 16 of sachet, lint, blotting paper, oil-prootl paper or the like is applied. The protected hairlll andthe Waver or curler 5 is housed within the lower barrel or tubular end of the waving or curling appliance 17, around lthe outside of which the shield 1 is gathered and there retained by a rubber ring `18 or the equivalent. A cup-like casing is thus formed in which any steam or hot condensate escaping or issuing from the. waving or curling appliance is trapped.`
A.' modified i'orm of nipple is shown in Figure., where, instead of shaping the nipple to form a necked portion as in Figure 1, a tubular portion 19 of evenV thickness is doubled back upon itself, giving in "effect ka thickened wall.`
An auxiliary washer or shield or pad ot telt o'r the likenot shown in the drawings may be positionedon the head below the rubber shield hereinbefore Ireferred to. Such auxiliary washer is preferably constructed so thaty it may be slipped on the head sideways' to avoid threading the hair therethrough. To this end a radial slit is made from the central aperture in the Washer to the outer edge thereof so that a gap may be formed b v temporarily parting the material of either side of the .slit to allow the tress of hair to slip sideways into the central aper-` :2.
