This invention relates to articulated cars and has for an object the provision of safety means between the interior portions of the I adjacent ends of two adjacent bodies and 6 the movable vestibule orv passageway member therebetween.
Another object of the invention is to provide, an automatically adjustable safety means between the interior portions of the 10 adjacent ends of the adjacent bodies of an articulated car' and the vestibule or passageway member therebetween.
A further object of the invention is to,
provide an adjustable guard for an articulated car which is located interiorly of the car and which extends between and is attached at one end to the end portion of the car body and at the other end to a vestibule or passageway member. g j These and other objects will be apparent from the following description:
Referring to the drawings in'which like reference characters refer to like parts, Fig.
1 is a cross sectional view of a portion of an articulated car embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 and illustrates a modification of the invention, and Figs. 4 and 5- are diagrammatic plan views showing the invention in several of its operating positions.
Referring now in detail to the drawings the reference character 1 indicates an articulated car which comprises a plurality of bodies 2 which are of a'ny suitable construction. 4
Between the adjacent ends of two adjacent car bodies, and between the; verticall disposed posts or framing members 3 0 such ends there is arranged a vestibule or passage- 'wa member 4. This 'member 4.- is prefera ly of cylindrical form and is mounted either on the truck or upon one of the bodies 2 in such a manner that relative rota movement between the member and the a jacent ends of the bodies 2 is permitted. This member 4 has a passageway 5 formed therethrough and adjacent each side of. such passageway the curved sides 6 of the member 4 are engaged by weatherproofing elements 7 which are mounted on the posts 3 of the adjacent ends of two adjacent bodies. In the presentembodiment of the invention these elements 7 are. in the form of rollers butit will be understoodthat any other. suit- 7 able weatherproofing elements may be used.
The edges of the walls 6 of the vestibule member which form the passageway 5 are within the car bodies at all times but the relative positions of these edges and the weather-proofing elements are being varied substantially all the time the car is in transit and it would be possible for a 'passengers clothing to be accidentally drawn into the spaces between the Walls 6 and the posts 3 or between the walls 6 and the weather" proofing elements 7 with the consequent damage to the clothing. Further pas senger could be injured by having his hand or other part of his body squeezed between the walls 6 and the posts 3 or between the walls 6' and the weath'erproofing elements 7. For the purpose of preventing any accidents of the nature just referred to, guard means 8 are provided between the vestibule member and the posts 3. These guard means may be of any suitable form but as illustrated in the drawings each preferably comprises a flexible member, one edge portion of which is attached to; the vestibule member adjacent the edge defining a portion of a passageway 5 and the opposite edge portion being attached to the adjacent car body. This member may extend in a vertical direction for the full length of the 1 sides 6 of the vestibule member or if desired may be made of less length. In an articulated car comprising a plurality of bodies, a vestibule member between the adjacent ends of two of said bodies, weather proofing means between said memher and said bodies, and automatically adjustable guard means extending between said member and bodies interiorly of said bodies, adapted to prevent accidental access to said weather proofing means.
3. In an articulated car comprising a plurality of car bodies, a vestibule member between the adjacent ends of two of sai bodies, weather proofing means intermediate the sides of said member and said bodies, and guard means arranged interiorly of said bodies for covering the spaces between said bodies and vestibule member.
4. In an articulated car comprising a plurality of car bodies. spaced vertical posts for each of said bodies, a vestibule member for said bodies adapted to extend between the post of each body weather proofing means on said bodies bearing on said vestibule member, and a guard member interiorly of each of said bodies spanning the space between each of the posts of each of said bodies and said vestibule member.

In an articulated car comprising a plurality of car bodies, a vestibule member between the adjacent ends of two of said bodies, said member having portions extending into said bodies, weather proofing means between said portion of said member and said bodies, and guard means secured to the portions of said member that are within said bodies and extending therefrom to the said bodies and there secured.
6. In an articulated car comprising a plurality of car bodies, a vestibule member between the adjacent ends of two of said bodies having a passageway formed therein, weather proofing means between said bodies and said vestibule, and guard members with in said bodies extending from said vestibule member to adjacent parts of said bodies and secured thereto, each of said guard members being secured to said vestibule member adjacent one side of said passageway to prevent accidental access to the space between said vestibule member and ends of said bodies.
7 The combination with the adjacent ends of two bodies of an articulated car, of a vestibule member between said bodies, said member having portions extending into said bodies, and a guard member extending between and attached to each of said portions and the adjacent portion of one of said bodies.
8. The combination with the adjacent ends of two bodies of an articulated car, of a vestibule member between said ends, said member comprising curved sides which terminate interiorly of said bodies, weather proofing means between adjacent sides of vestibule member and car bodies, and a guard member secured to said curved sides and extending therefrom to adjacent part of said body.
