Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE,
EUGENE POWELL, OF DELAWARE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT m FENcE-PosTs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,692, dated May 25, 1875; application filed January 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EUGENE POWELL, of Delaware, in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Fence Post and Brace, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of myim proved fencepost. Fig. 2 is a side view of the post.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to improvements in iron fence-posts for producing a neat, durable, and strong farm-fence; and it consists of a post with braced stool seated in the ground, in connection with an additional stool attached at right angles thereto, in the direction of the fence, for increasing the base surface of the post.
In the drawing, A represents a fence-post, formed of suitable sheet-iron or other metal, being bent in such a manner that a neat and pleasing shape is given to the same. The base part of the post is set into the ground and shaped in the nature of a stool by widening the lower or base connecting-piece and giving the sides a proper inclination toward the vertical part of the post. The sides of the post are furthermore stiffened by outer brace-rods B, which run from the base to a point at suitable height above the ground. An additional stool, O, is placed between the base part of post A, at right angles to the same, and in the direction of the fence, and riveted, or otherwise attached, to the base connecting-piece of the post and to a strip, 0, passing laterally across the upper part of stool O. The bearing-surface of the post is, by the additional stool, greatly increased, and the post securely and firmly held in the ground by the earth around the same. The fence rails or rods D are supported on sleeves or rings E, which are pivoted between the sides of the post for admitting the quick insertion of the rods. Intermediately between the posts the rods D are supported by braces F.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the sheet-metal post A, having a widened base or stool portion formed in one piece therewith, and the stool 0, extending longitudinally, or in the direction of the fence, and made separate from the post, substantially as herein described.
2. The combination of the post A, bracerods B, stool 0, and sleeves or rings E, substantially as set forth.
EUGENE POWELL.
