METHOD or MAKING LATE-NEWS PRINTING rLAT ANn MOLD'TIIEREFOR.

This invention relates to the casting of a curved printing plate having a cavity therein for the reception of type or slugs to be inserted as needed for the purpose of introducing late news. I
The principal objects of the invention are to provide means whereby the said cavity will be produced in the cast plate simultaneously with its manufacture, and in such manner that it shall be done quickly and with but little labor; and to provide an improved method of producing a plate with a cavity for that purpose' Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the core of acurved stereotype plate mold provided with a detachable coring block for the pur pose specified herein;

Although I intend to use this invention mainly for the insertion of late news in the newspaper, it is of course capable of general use for making changes in printed matter at any desired time. The .invention is particularly adapted for use with curved printing plates and for that reason I have shown it in connection therewith. I have illustrated an ordinary convex core 10 adapted to co-Operate witha segmental back 11 to produce cast plates 20 between them. This core is so made that it can be used for the purpose of producing an ordinary curved cast plate, but I provide it with a plurality of holding devices adapted to secure the coring block during the casting operation. When not used for producing a plate having a cavity to be filled with late news printing characters, the holding devices which are shown as screws 13 in screw-threaded holes 12 merely cast small sockets in the back of the plate which do not affect its usefulness. The direction of the pins is such that the plate will easily be drawn off their exterior ends in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2.
When I desire to cast the late news cavity I place on these screws a coring block I5 of curved shape so as to lit the surface of the core where it is retained by these screws 13 during the casting operation. The coring block has a'pair of parallel sockets 16 arranged in a direction parallel with the direction of the draw and at the proper distance apart to receive the two offset ends lt of the screws 13.
This coring block may have a thickness substantially equal to the thickness of the plate so that it fills the space between the core and matrix M which lies against the back of the mold. It may have any desired extent and shapeso that it shall'becapable of'producing a cavity inv the plate for the purpose set forth. The coring block also has two recesses 17 at opposite edges extending in' a circumferential direction along the coring block on its convex side. These may extend throughout the width of the coring block and preferably are interrupted at 18 at a shortdistance from one straight edge of the block flush on one side with the edge of the block and flush'on the other side with the convex surface of the block. They proride recesses 2a in ledges 22 cast on the plate 20by this arrangement.
In the production of a plate with a cavity for the purpose described and with this apparatus, the coring block is placed on the pins-13 and thus held on'the core and the back with its matrix M closed up against it. Themetal is then poured, surrounding'the coring block and making an otherwise complete plate. The plate being cast can be separated from the core by moving it in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2, the "same as with an ordinary apparatus. The coring block is thus removed from the core withthe plate.v Then as indicated in Fig. 3 the coring block is drawn out of the plate on the concave side.
The plate 20 produced by this means is provided with a cavity 21 in which type, slugs. or illustrations can be inserted from the back or front, and along two curved outer edges it is provided with ledges '22 extending almost the whole length of the cavity but interrupted by the open passages 24. The slugs and locking device therefor can be inserted or removed through these passages. By having the ledges 22 on the front side of the curved plate the late news slugs and illustrations can be held by the plate itsclf.' Thus no separate chase or turtle is required as the plate 20 performs its functions.
Although I have illustrated and described only one form of this invention, I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described or to the particular form of plate illustrated, but what I do claim is l. A convex core for a stereotype plate mold having detachably mounted on its conver; surface a coring block for forming a late news cavity in the plate to be cast.
2. In a mold for casting a curved stereotype printing plate, the combination with the two parts of the mold, of a coring block mounted on one of said parts of the mold and extending across the mold space whereby a late news opening is cast in the plate.
3. The combination with the two parts of a casting mold for a curved stereotype printing; plate, of a coring block detachably mounted on one of them and adapted to be removed therefrom by the separation of the plate from it, said coring blockextending across the space between the two parts of the mold whereby a late news opening is cast in the plate.

The con'ihination of a segmental back and curved core for casting a curved stereotype printing plate. of a curved coring block detachably mounted on the core and filling the space between the core and back and adapted to be removed from the core with the plate and then capable of being removed from the plate, and having means for forming suitable surfaces in the plate for the reception of late news printing characters. p
5. In a curved stereotype printing plate casting device. the combination with a core and back. of coring block. and means for detachably supporting the block by the core so that it will be detached therefrom with the plate when the plate is separated from the core.
6. In a stereotype printing plate casting de ice, the combination with a convex core niving means for carrying a core block for east a late news passageway through a printing. plate, and a coring block mounted on said core by said means and removable therefrom with the cast plate.
7. In a mold for casting a stereotype printing plate, the combination with the two parts of the mold, of a coring block mounted on. one of said parts of the mold and eX tending clear across the mold space to fill it and provided with means for forming surfaces on the cast plate to hold late news slugs.
8. In a stereotype printing plate casting device, the combination with a convex core provided with a pair of pins thereon having angularly arranged ends projecting therefrom in a direction parallel to the direction in which the plate and core separated to release the plate therefrom. and a coring block mounted on the projecting ends of said pins.
9. The method of casting and delivering a curved stereotype printing plate having a late news opening therein, which consists in casting the plate in a mold having a cor ing block therein for producing the opening in the plate, opening the mold detaching from one part the mold the plate with the block en'ibedded therein, and removing the block from the cast plate.
10. A convex core for a stereotype plate mold having detachably mounted on its convex surface a coring block for forming a passageway through the plate to be cast for the purpose of inserting therein later news than that cast upon the face of the plate.
11. In a mold for casting a curved stereotype printing plate, the combination with the two parts of the mold, of a coring block mounted on one of said parts of the mold and extending into the mold space whereby a passageway through the plate is cast in which may be inserted later news than that cast upon the face of the plate.
12. The combination with the two parts of a casting mold for a curved stereotype printing plate, of a coring block detachably mounted on one of them and adapted to be removed therefrom with the plate when the plate is separated from it, said coring block passing through the space between the two parts of the mold whereby a late news passageway is cast from one side of the plate to the other. a I
13. In a curved stereotype printing plate casting device. the combination with a core and back, of a coring block adapted to cast a passageway traversing the plate from one side to the other. and means for detachably holding the block on the core so that it will be detached therefrom with the plate when the plate is separated from the core.
14. In a mold for casting a stereotype printing plate, the combination with the two parts of the mold, of a coring block mounted between said two parts and extending across the mold space to produce a late news opening in the plate as cast.
