This invention relates to improvements in diagnostic instruments, and has particular reference to the provision of an improved laryngoscope, which is particularly adaptable for use in examining the throat and past the nasal opening. Y l
-An important object of the invention is to provide such a device having a source .ot light and a detachable reflector support.
`Another object is to provide such a device with an angularly-disposed reflector inthe path of light, said reflectorbeing capable of adjustment so as to deflect the light rays `to different positions relative to the-body portion ot' the instrument.
Another object is to provide such a device with an adjustable condensinglens.r whereby the light may be focused to vary the area of illumination by the'instrument.
Another object is to provide such a device wherein the parts may be readily detached for the purpose of sterilization or for interchangeability.

f In carrying out the invention, a handle member 10, which may be of the battery containing type, or adaptable for connection to an out side source Vof electrical energy, is fitted with a metallic extention 11 upon its upper end, upon which is operative a nut 12, which is screw threaded and` capable of forming an electrical connectionbetwee-n the lextension 11 and the upper cap 18 of t-he handle member 10. 11 is centrally apert-ured as at 111 and formed The metallic extensionV with a reduced threaded extremity 15, to which may be connected the illuminating head designated generally bythe reference character 1G. n
The illuminating head 16 is preferably formed of t-wo angularly disposed members 17 and 18, they being illustrated in the drawings las at right angles to one another, but of course the angle between thesel two parts maybe either acute or obtuse, as is desired. The extension 18 is formed with a smooth cylindrical exterior .19 upon which is slidably and' rotatably mounted a sleeve' 2O carrying at itsv forward end a condensing The extremity j lens 21 of anj.Y suitable type. ofthe member 18 is further provided with a screw threaded socket 22 for the reception of an incandescent lamp 23, a pair of insulating bushings 211 and 25 are seated in the illuminating headk as illustrated, and support the conductor 26 which connects the central terminal from the battery with the central terminal of the lamp butt, thus forming one side of the electrical circuit. rlChe second side ot the-electrical circuit is formed by the metallic members 11, 12, 17 and 18 by con# nection with theupperY cap 18 of the handle.
Disposed at one side of the sleeve 20 is a boss, 27, having a slightly tapered hole 28, which is adapted to receive a reflector supporting stem 29. The stem 29 carries at( its outer end an angularly disposed reflector 30, and is frictionally held in the boss 27.
By virtue ot the tact that the sleeve 20 is rotatable on the cylindrical extension 19 of the illuminating head, the reflecting surface of the reflector 30 and its support may Vbe rotated through 360 degrees, thus making itpossible to defiect the light rays from the instrument in any direction relative to the axis of the lamp. rlhis is highly desirable because the instrument necessarily has to be used under differing conditions, the patient being examined sometimes lying in bed, and sometimes sitting` up in a chair; also by reason of the :tact that the sleeve 2O is slidably mounted the light rays may be focused to vary the area ot illumination `from the instrument.
In its commercial form each instrument will be provided with several stems 29, each with a different size or dierent type mirror, some having a plain surface and some being concave. Having thus described my invention, I claim:
