ELECTRIC LAMP FOR DENTAL AND OTHER Application filed December 1, 1917.

Be it known that I, ARTHUR S'UTTER, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing in Aimecy-Albigny, Haute-Savoie, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Lamps for Dental and other Uses, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in or relating to electric lamps which are particularly suitablefor use by dental surgeons but are also capable of other applications.
The improved lamp produces an illuminating field of comparatively small diameter which enables the mouth of the patient to be illuminated in a very perfect manner without causing any fatigue to the eyes of the operator.
The improved lamp is particularly intended to replace the known lamps in which a Nernst lamp is used and comprises a lamp having a tungsten filament which is arranged vertically and has its bulb inclosed between two hollow hemispheres. The hemispheres may be connected by a spigot and socket joint. The rear hemisphere is internally silvered so as to constitutethe reflector proper, while the front hemisphere is darkened upon its inner surface, and carries a horizontal tube within which slides the usual tube carrying the lenses.
The electric lamp has its cooling tube or tubular portion freely projecting from the spherical casing so as to be entirely surrounded by air, and is mounted in an ordinary holder or socket which is adapted to slide and turn in a clamping collar carried by one of the hemispheres, whereby the luminous point may be easily centered.
Sufficient ventilation is obtained by the provision of a circular opening in the lower portion of the spherical casing and a suitable opening at the point where the cooling tube of the lamp passes through the casing. The whole apparatus be attached to a rod fixed to the wall or any other suitable supporting member, by means of a collar which may be adjusted to and fixed in any desired angular position rendering the refiector immovable in all directions.
The drawings accompanying the specification show by way of example a lamp constructed according to the invention.

The apparatus comprises a lamp 1 of the half-watt type of say 200 candle-power, the tungsten filament of which is preferably arranged as shown in the drawing. 'The bulb of the lamp is inclosed' between'two hollow hemispheres 2 and 3 which may be connected "by a socket and spigot joint. The lamp 1 is arranged vertically, has its cooling tube 4L entirely surrounded by air and is mounted in an ordinary holder 5' which is adapted to slide and turn in a collar 6 carried by a bracket 7 secured in the front hemisphere 3 so as to enable the luminous point to be easily centered. After centering the lamp, the screw nut 8 is tightened to maintain the lamp in the proper position.
The mounting of the lamp in such a manner that the cooling tube a is entirely surrounded by the fresh air has the advantage of avoiding excessive heating, and consequently increases the life of the lamp. Moreover a satisfactory ventilation is obtained by the provision of a circular opening 9 at the basis of the hemispheres 2 and 8 and an opening 10 at the point Where the cooling tube 4: of the lamp 1 projects from the casing.
The provision of the loweropening 9 has the additional advantage that the reflector maybe used for illuminating the antiseptic table usually placed close to the chair. The rear hemisphere 2 which serves as the refleotor proper is internally silvered or nickel coated while the other hemisphere is internally blackened.
The latter hemisphere carries a tube 11 within-which slides the tube 12 containing the lenses as usual. The whole apparatus is attached to a rod 13, secured to the wall or any other supporting member. A collar 14: is provided with a set screw 15, and vertically extending arms 16 connected to the r0d'13. The top ends of thearms 16 form a fork 17 which is connected by means of a set screw 18 to a vertical member 19 adapted to turn about its own axis within a sleeve 20 at the end of the rod 13.
It will be seen that owing to the provision of the pivots 18 and 19 the Whole apparatus may be easily adjusted by means of a handle 21 attached to the collar 14 so as to assume any desired angular position,
the whole apparatus being movable in all directions.
Claims:
1. An electric reflector for dental use having in combination a spherical casing consisting of two parts, an electric lamp sus pended in the casing, asupport riveted on the front part of the casing and comprising a collar Which engages the lamp socket, a tube formed integral with the front part of the casing, a lens tube slidable in said integral tube, a tightening collar surrounding the integral tube and having upwardly extending arms for attachment to a support, and a double joint at the upper ends of the vertical arms-permitting the apparatus to be adjusted in various directions.
2. Anrelectric reflector for dental use having 1n combination a spherical casing formed in two parts, an electric lamp suspended in the casing, a support carried by the casing and having a collar in Which the lamp socket can slide and be fastened, the casing having an upper opening to receive the tubular por tion of the lamp, a tube formed integral with the casing, a lens tube slidable in said integral tube, a collar on the integral tube having upwardly extending arms for attachment to a support, and a handle for adjusting the apparatus in various directions.
