UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.4
ABRAM,E.- FALOR, OF AKRON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE B. F. GOODRIGH COMPANY, OF
NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
TUBE-SKIVIN G APPARATUS.
Application filed May 19,
This invention relates to tube skiving machines, particularly to a machine for skiving' l the ends of a length of tubular stock prepaheretofore has been possible.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of a machine embodying a preferred form of my invention' v l Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section through the operative parts of the machine;
Fig.- 3 is a view in section through the suction valve of the machine; and
Fig. 4 illustrates a tube the end of which has been skived or beveled by means-of my improved machine.
My invention in substance involves a suction means for holding securely the end of a thin rubber tube in a turned-back or cuifed condition on a mandrel which is movable into operative cutting position with respect to a rotating, tubular knife for skiving of the vend thereof to better adapt thetube end for splicing, and in the specific form illustra-ted comprises a hollow frusto-conical member or nozzle'having a foraminous outer wall portion upon which the tube is folded back and an enlarged portion vformin a shoulder with the foraminous portion against which shoulder the tube end is placed prior to the sk'ivin operation. The erforations of the foraminous wall communicate with a chamber formed within the hollow frustoconical nozzle and a valve-controlled conduit connected with a suction line serves to evacu. ate the chamber when the nozzle'is moved into operative-striving position and to break the vacuum when the nozzle is retracted therefrom. In prior constructions, it has been the practice to make the mandrel on which the'tube end is folded back much larger than the tube beingbeveled and to stretch the, tube end over the mandrel relying upon the elasticity of the tube to hold it thereon during skiviiig. In such constructions there is a considerable sli page of the tube about the mandrel whic causes 0b- 1924. Serial No.v 714,415.l
jectionable irregularities in the bevel. In
attempts to minimize this slippage, the
beveled cut is made at a considerable distance from the tube end,l thus wasting a considera'ble amount of material. 'The present apparatus firmly holds the material being cut or beveled by vacuum pressure from within and thus permits the cutting operation to be performed at the very end of the tube 'with a. great saving of material and with the production of a clean, uniform bevel. Further, the nozzle bein of substantially .the size of the tubing, t e tubing is readily slipped on and off the nozzle saving much time .and labor in this operation.
Referring to the drawings, I show my tube skiving machine mounted upon a table 10 having a pedestal support 11. The machine consists essentially of a rotating knife 12, a motor 13 operatively connected thereto as by shaft 14, and a mandrel 15 movable in the direction of the axis of rotation of the knife, all being of conventional construction in machines of this character.
The mandrel 15 comprises a bracket member 16 slidably supportedon table 10 and a nozzle member 17. The nozzle/17 includes a frusto-conical nose portion 18 and a cylindrical shank portion 19, the latter secured in the bracket 16, and is provided with an axial opening. 20 for the reception of the 'tube 21 to be skived. A shoulder 22 rises abruptly from the nose 18 to the shank 19 and serves for the positioning of the tiibe 21, as here. inafter described. A
The annular wallof the mandrel 15 is constructed to provide therein an annular chamber 25 coextensive with the. axial length of the nose 18 and which may extend through the shank 19 if desired. The outer wall of the nose 18 is provided with 'a plurality of apertures 26, communicating'with the chamber 25 and so spaced as to make the outer wall foraminous in-character, as illustrated in Fig.v 1. A
The mandrell has formed in the base of v chamber ol the mandrel 15 by means of a flexible conduit 40, and a port dlleading' Adirectly to the atmosphere. The setting ot the pinion 29, shaft 30, and valve 33 is such that When the crank arm is moved to ady vance the mandrel 15 toward the knife 12 atmosphere through port 41." A vacuumthe port 41 is closed and then the port 3l', opened to place the chamber Q5 in commumcation with the suction line 38, and conversely at the completion of the retracted position of the mandrel 15 the port i7 to the suction line is closed and the chamber 2 then placed in communication with the pressure is thus maintained in chamber 25 for holding -the tube end firmly to the nose 1S during the skiving action and immediately before and after this action. The vacuum is` automatically broken, however, at the outermost position of'the mandrel 15, so
that the positioning and removing of the `'tube may be readily accomplished.
Theo eration of the above described machine is rieily as follows: With the mandrel in theouter retracted ositionshpwn in Fig. 1, one end of a' rub r tire'is lnserted through the opening 20ct the mandrel 15 and folded back over the outer wall of the nose 1S, the margin of the tube end abutting the shoulder 22. The crank arm is t'hen pulled back to advance the mandrel 15 and tube carried thereby into operative position with respect' to the rotating knife 19.. Upon the first advancing movements of the mandrel, the chamber 25 is connected to the suction line 38 through the valve 33 and the vacuum created therein causes the euiied portion of the tube end to be pressed firmly to the outer wall of the nose 18. The vaeuum in chamber 25 is maintained during the skiving operation and is brolren-only when the mandrel has again been withdrawn to its outer retracted position. The tube with its end properly beveled is then readily removed from the i `andrei, and the machine "is ready for a succeeding operation.
Modifications may be resorted to within the scope of this invention and I do not wholly limit my claims to the speeio construction shown. e
I claim:
