' DRINKING FOUNTAIN.
'Appiicaiidniiiea'iiugasi 25,1924. serial no. l733,570..
t'ountain headv of simple construction inwhich` an automatic device is particularly f arranged to permit the drinking stream to flow uniformly at a'constant height under varying pressured'tor example when a sudden heavy demand on the water line creates a momentary decrease'ot flow :at the tountain head, or where a'sudden iii'creasekin pressure or pulsating flow causes the water `to spurt from the discharge nozzle and pro duce an objectionable drinking stream.v
ln the accompanyingdrawings, Fig.' 1 is Ia top view ot a drinlrii'ig fountain head containing .my improvement, and Fig. 2` is a vertical section longitudinally through the niiddlethercotw Figzj is a vertical section transversely of the head on line 8-3 o'l Fig.2. 4 is a bottom view `ot the head. Fig. 5 is a side elevationan'd part sectional AView of the same,v drinking fountain shownV inthe other views, but containing a modified t'orin of the controlling device 'for the drinkingfstream.A yii`igs. 6 and 7 are perspective views of the floating cap and reliei nozzle, respectively, illustrated in 5.
i The invention comprises a hollow body 2` of elongated form having around enlargement 3 at'its middle containing an overflow and drainage chamber 4 which is open Aat its bottomtor the free discharge of water overflowing thereinto,-but which'is closed at its top by a hollow screw capl 5. A main water passage 6 extendsv through body 2 and has open communication with overflow chamber 4 by way ofia small vertical ductor opening 7 of smallV diameter situated centrally beneath cap 5,and this opening 7 vis preferably p formed within a separate removable member 8 having a screw-threaded base yextension 9 adapted to be screwedinto a screw-threaded opening formed in the top of the horizontal cross wall 10 which spans the middle of Y overflow chamber 4. vIn one form ofthe inf vention member 8 is of cup-shape having an lopentopl and a series of lateral discharge openings 11 in its side wall, see Figs. 2 and 3. A cylindrical plunger 12 vis loosely conned within the cup member 8 and has a recessed bottom adapted to enclose the ribbed 4,or beaded outlet end of the reliefduct or vent opening 7. The size and weight of -loose plunger 12 is such that escape ot' water fromv opening 7 Vis prevented under a predetermined noini'ali pressure, especially 'when the flow otgwatei' through head or body 2 is otherwise. uninterrupted. "A screw-threaded bottomintalre 14 is provided at one endof if "cerise,
body 2 which is separated from main pas-3' sage 6 by a thiclrdivision u'all 15 having a small vertical bore 16 therein `and also a hoi-f izontal opening 17 .which is screw-threaded to receive a pressure regulating screw 1.8.
The inner extremity of screw 18 is adapted to Vbe projected into bore-16Y more or less'to 'ref strict the flowy of water therethrough,- and the outer controlling end of the .screw 'projects through an enclosing gland or packing member 19v attached to body 2. .A discharge lnoa/le20 is attachedto thetop of theop` positebendof .body 2,vv and lin the present instance this ynozzle contains itwo separate discharge orifices 21fand 22, which are inclined in respect to each other tov bring two small streams ot water into l'confluence land thereby lorm a vertically widened drinking stream at one side of the'nozzle substantially as delineated in Fig. 5. However, any other former style ot nozzle be used insteadV of the type` shown,V inasmuch, as the inven-r tion resides ymore particularly in the stream controlling 'features anda fountain head constructed as hereinbetore4 described.
figures and similar reference characters'are employed for designatinglike parts. `The inverted cup 12A instead of plunger 12. The
sa 'lhefountain 'h'eadsliown in -Figu is in the mainftlie same as that shown 'in the other sides ofrnipple 8 are vribbedjto 'space the ,l
sides of cup V12apart from the nipple and permit the "overflow to escape into drainage chamber 4. Y zCap v5',V in either."construction shown, serves toclose` the top rof thedrainage chamber and to vlimit thev upward move-` ment yofV the weighted member controlling the outfiowfofwater from vertical duct 7. Removal ofthiscap givesaccess-to the parts covered thereby which are 'preferably removquirements.
In' use thev pressure attheintalerto meet any given condition in the line of supply. It a regulating j vable and interchangeable tonieetvarious'ie v iris f screw is alone depended upon to regulate they'` flow of water'through the fountainfhead a p decreaseinpressure will produce a weak ranging yfrom fifteen to two hundred pounds.v
That I claim as myinvention is:` l, In a drinking fountain, a single unit e comprising a hollow head of elongated form having a central integral enlargement containing a drainage chamber openat its top and bottom and formed with a horizontal .supply passage extendingV through said chamber, an overflow valve exposed tothe `flow rof the water through said supply ypassage, a valve seating` member removably Vmounted within said chamber in constantopen communication ywith said supply passage, and apc-ap closing the top of said chamber and detachably connected with the `'wall of said head. v l
2. In a drinking fountain, a single unit comprising a hollow headvof elongated form having'a mainvpassage with an intake connection provided with a pressure regulatingv device rat one end. and a stream forming nozzle at its' opposite endand formed with an overliow chamber within the head itself intermediate said ends, a valve seating mem- V ber screwed removably to said head within .said chamber havingan overflow duct rcoml municating with said main passage, a
weighted valve member slidably engaging said screw member adapted to Vcontrol the overflow through said duct, and a hollow screw cap for closing the top of saidchamber and freely enclosing said valve member, said upper wall of said head.
3. In a drinking fountain, a'hollow head having a main water passage provided with a pressure regulating 4screw at the intake side and formed with a stream forming nozzle constantly open to'said passage, said head having an integral boss at its top and an overflow chamber withinV saidboss open to said passage, a capffor said chamber detacl'iably ahiXed to said integral boss, a valve seating member removably mountedv within screw cap being'screw-connec'ted with vthe the outflow into said chamber. Y
l. In a drinking` fountain, a hollow heat of elongated form having a main. passage in its bottom portion and a screw-threaded intake with adjustable water controlling means at one end, a nozzle member detachably connected with said-head at the opposite end of said passage, Aa central hollow enlargement at the to of said head having a screwthreaded opening and an open bottom, an
overflow member extendingfroni themain passage through said open bottom into said enlargement andremovably connected with Vsaid head, a weighted valve member having a recessed bottom seated upon said overflow member, and a cap screw-connected Vwith said enlargement apart from said overflow member.
