IMPROVEMENT IN COUPON TAGS AND CHECKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,496. dated May 18, 1875; application filed January 2, 1875. v

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE R. G. J oNEs, of Memphis, in Jthe county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coupon Baggage-Checks, of which the following is a specification:

Y My invention relates to checks used for baggage on railroads, steamboats, 85e.

The means now usually employed for checking baggage is by means of duplicate brass checks, one of which is attached by a leather strap to the article. It is found that such checks are apt to accumulate at one end of the line, and difficulty is experienced to get them back to the stations from whence they came.

Another means has been by printed slips, pasted on the baggage, which is objected to by many persons as unnecessarily deffacing the trunks, besides the liability of mistakes when, as often happens, a number of such Aslips remain on the trunk.

My invention obviates all the difficulties of the former methods; and it consists in a tag having suitable directions printed upon it in duplicate, and provided with a wire to be easily attached to the article to be checked, part of the tag being first torn oif and delivered to the passenger, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and which shows my improved baggage-check.

A represents an ordinary thick-paper tag, of any suitable dimensions, provided, as usual, at one end with a hole, a., strengthened by a small paper disk on each side. Through this hole is passed a wire, B, which is twisted at the end of the tag, leaving the ends of the wire straight to be inserted and fastened in the handle, or other convenient place on the trunk or other article of baggage to be checked. The face of the tagAis, by a transverse broken depressed line, b, divided in two parts, C and D, which can easily be detached one from the other. On these parts are printed suitable directions, showing from and to what point the baggage is going. The inner part O is printed with the word duplicate, and the part D with the word originah and both have the same number printed or stamped on them.

In checking baggage, the outer part D, or original, is detached and given to the passenger, while the part C, or duplicate, is attached, by means of the Wire B, to the baggage.

When baggage is delivered the baggagemaster is to tear up both the original and dnplicate.

These checks are intended to be kept on hand the same as tickets, and will take up but little room.

The expense is triing, and it obviates the object-ions urged against the former methods of checking baggage.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I cla-im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The within-described baggage-check, consisting of the tag A, provided with the wire B, and having its face divided into the duplicate G and original D with suitable instructions and numbers printed thereon, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
