rllhis invention relates to improvements in receptacles and more particularly to metallic receptacles of that general character having a hinged closure and an interiorly disposed movablesecondary receptacle therein, with operating means whereby the secondary receptacle may be raised and the cover opened. Such types of receptacles are particularly adapted for use as trash and garbage'contaiiiers, where it is uiidesirableto actually` handle various parts, vvas well as receptacles nets, andthe like,fwhere access to the instruments or materials is desired without the necessity of manually raising the cover or opening' the drawer thereof by direct lcontact. f

Itl is therefore one of the objects off'the present invention to provide a receptacle of simple and practical construction'-which may easily be operatedY to open ther same `thereby to permit access' to the interior. A yfurther object-is to provide a strong and-durable receptacle ofthe above general character of sanitary construction andl having relatively few parts vwhich may be inexpensively manufactured aiidassembled. For convenience, the invention will be hereinafter described with relation tof its application to a sanitary garbage or trash can, altho it'is to be, of course, understood that the invention is equally applicable to sanitary trays for' surgical instruments without material modification.

` Referring now to the drawings in detail, 10 indicates the main outer receptacle which is preferably of galvanized sheet iron and Aof cylindricalconstruction, provided with a closure 11 hinged to receptacle 10 in any desired manner, as indicated at`12. The lower portion ci' this'receptacle is provided with a reinforcing bridge member 13, which includes a relatively Hat upper supporting surface and two downwardly extending end portions 14 riveted-orfotherwise' suitably secured to the receptacle 10. One end of this bridge vmay be slightly cut away, togetherA with the outer wall of the receptacle 10, to provide lan' opening-15- in which a-pivoted-` lever 16 is adapted'to be inserted. 'This lever lis supported by Ya pivot pin 1T associated with ythe downwardly extending end of the bridge member 13. In :order to form a durable and "more substantial construction, this lever 16 has one end bent at right angles to provide a pedal or foot engaging member 18,.while vthe opposite end is apertured as at 2O forthe reception of a bolt.'

A Yfurther purpose of the construction, as herein outlined, is to permitthe opening and closing` ot' the receptacle with the minimum amount ot trouble and without the necessity olf handling` any of the parte. All that is necessary to etl'eet this operation is for the operator to depress the pedal 18 with his toot, which :auees the T-shaped rneinber 22 and 2233 to raise the bucket 25 to its dotted line position, and the leverage and engagement between the Cover and bucket thereby obtained, to act upon the cover ll causing,` the eaine to swing npwnrdlY to the dotted line position, as indicated. On release of the foot pedal. the bucket is automatically lowered, and the cover o't the eau assumes a tightly closed position.

ln the above, it will be seen that the present invention contemplates a simple and practical receptacle haring,- relativeliT few parte` which may be inexpensively manufactured and aes nbled, and, while particularly applicable as a garbage or trash can may, as above stated, be applied to other purpoeee where i-zanitation ie desired.

I claim:
