Description
' F. NETSCHERT LOCK SIINDLE` Filed July22, 1926 WJ; i "IIIIII j www Patented July s, 1927.
UNITED `STATES PATENT orFic FRANZ NETSCHERT, F GLENDALE, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO TECHNICAL GLASS COMPANY, INC., OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
LOCK SPINDLE.
Application filed July 22, 1926.
This invention relatesy to improvements in a lock spindle, and this application consti.-
tutcs a companion application to previous applications for patent .tiled by this applicant, Serial No. 107.377, tiled May 7, 1926,
and Serial No. 117,271, filed June 21. 1926.
One of the principal objects of this invention is the provision of a lock spindle adapted lo be used with any form of lock m employing a. spindle, and particularly adapted for use with the lockv constructions outlined in the aforesaid applications for United States Letters Patent.
One of the main features of this invention is the provision in a lock spindle of means for manually releasing a locking element such as that illustrated in application for United States Letters Patent Serial No. 117,271, in the event that it becomes necessary to release said locking means on account of an accident or the like.
Still another and further important ob ject of this invention is the provision of a lock spindle adapted for manual release of alocking means when desired, but which can be released only by a person acquainted with the operation of the spindle.
Other and further important objects ofthe invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawings and following specification.
The invention, in a preferred form, is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a set of door knobs and a latch together Vwith a locking means for showing the improved spindle of this invention used 4o therewith.
Figure 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the lock spindle of this invention showing the same assembled.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of one end of the spindle.
Figure 4 is an end view of that portion of the spindle shown in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the construction of the main portion of the:
5U spindle and illustrating the part which fits into the end shown in Figure 3.
As shown in the drawings: The reference numeral 10 indicates a door or the like having a lock 12 applied thereto,
this lock 12 being provided with a latch 14,
Serial No. 124,116.
and preferably being of a construction similar to that illust-rated in application for United States Letters Patent Serial No. 107,377, tiled May 7, 1926. However, any other form of lock may be used with this spindle, if desired.
The door 10 is provided with a pair of knobs 16 mounted upon a spindle 18 in the usual manner, and adapted to lock the spindle against rotation is a locking means` embodied in a casing 2O and adapted to be affixed to the inside of the door 10. This locking means is of a construction illustrated in application Serial No. 117,271, and when the knob 22 is pushed to one side the spindle 18 is locked against rotation, thereby securing the door in closed position against any releasing force from the outside.
The improved spindle of this invention is adapted to enable the door to be opened from the outside in an emergency, and comprises a. main body member 24, preferably of square cross-section, as illustrated, and having preferably integral therewith an extending pin 26 having a disk-like head thereon 28, which pin and disk are adapted to fit into a cylindrical opening and into the other portion 18 of the spindle, as best shown in Figure 2. Adjacent the juncture of the pin 26 to the spindle body 24 is a shoulder 30, preferably rectangular in shape, which normally lits into a corresponding notch 32 formed in the end of the member 18, this normal position being assured by means of a helical spring 34 which surrounds the pin 26 and has its inner end abutting against the shoulder 36 formed in the interior of the member 18.
In operation, when the lever 22 of the lock 20 is shifted to one side, the spindle 18--24- is prevented from rotating, but in the event of an emergency an outward pull upon that knob 16 which is mounted on the .opposite face of the door from the locking member 2O will result inthe member 24 of the spindle being drawn away from the member 18 against the tension of the spring 34 for a distance sufficient to permit of the shoulder or extension 30 to be withdrawn from its notch 32. When this happens the knob 16 on the outside of the door may be rotated, releasing the latch 14 in the lock casing 12 and allowing the .door l0 to be opened. It usually happens that doors ofthis sort are mounted to swing inwardly, and the 'usual of the spindle is known, a locked doorcan-4 not be ordinarily opened even though equipped with this device.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details ,ofi construction `varied throughout a wide rango without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
l. A lool; spindle, including separable parts, and means for normally retaining said parts position as a single operating unit, said means including a pin extending from one of the parts into the body of the other, and a helical spring surrounding said pin. 2. lool; spindle, including separable parts, and means for normally retaining said parts in position as a single operating unit7 said means including a pin extending from one of the parts into the body of the other,
and a helical spring surrounding said pin, JE
Yand a shoulder on one part together with a corresponding notch on the other part for maintaining the assembled parts in position to more as unit.
3. In a lockfa spindle for operating the same, means for locking the spindle against normal rotation for releasing the lock7 and additional means in the spindle for permitting the release of the lock in emergencies.l
4. In a lock, a spindleltor operating the same, means for locking the spindle against FRANZ Nnfrsonnnr.
