PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL BARUCH, OF NEW YOBK, N. Y.
ANTIRATTLI Application filed May 21,
This invention iszan improved anti-rattling device particularly adapted for use with vehicle windows and doors. The invention is an improvement on that disclosed in my prior Patent 1,446,952, issued October 16th, 1923.
One object of my invention is to so construct the plunger and so connect-itto the other parts that it may be readily removed and replaced so as to bring a different sur face to bear in case the plunger becomes worn.
A further object is to provide means whereby the parts may be separated and a new spring inserted any time, should occasion demand.
A further object is to so design the body portion of the device as to provide stronger and more rigid retaining parts for the plunger.
in the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and have illustrated one way in which it may be mounted for preventing rattling of an automobile door.
In these drawings:
Fig. 1 is a face view of a portion of a door and door casing, a part of the door be ing broken away to show the positioning of the antirattling device.
Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse sections on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 2 showing the door retained by the safety catch, and Fig. 3 showing the door in final or completely closed position.
Fig. "I is a face view of the device separate from the door.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 6, and
6 is an edge view of in Fig. 1.
1 have shown my invention as applied to the door casing 10 of an automobile body, and in such position as to engage with a flange 11 on the door 12. The door may be provided with any suitable form of latch for normally retaining it in closed position. A common form is one which includes a bolt 13 which engages first with a safety catch 1a when the door is partly'closed, and then in a socket 15 when the door is completely closed. My improved anti-rattling device is .such that it engages with the flange 11 and prevents rattling when the the parts shown 180 about the axis of the bore.
NG DEVICE.
1926. Serial No. 110,631.
door is in either of the two positions referred to. 7
As shown the device includes a metal block 16 having a bore 17 therethrough. .The 0pposite sides of this bore have grooves 18 which extend from one end of the block through to a point spaced 2. short distance from the other end so as to leave stops 19.
Mounted within the bore 17 is a cupshaped metal member 20 of such a diameter that itmay freely slide in the bore 17 At the open end of this member there are outwardly extending flanges 21 of such shape that they register with and conform to the shape of the grooves 18. Thev opposite end of the member 20 is closed. At the end of the block opposite to the stops 19 there is provided a transverse slot 22 in which a plate 23 may slide in a direction at right angles to the axis of the bore. In assem bling the device the cup'shaped member 20 is slipped into the bore and projected through until the flanges 21 engage the stops 19. Thereafter a coil spring 24: is inserted through the bore and into the member 20 to the closed end of the latter. The spring is held under compression while the plate 23 is-slipped into place, and the plate is thus frictionally retained by the spring and serves as a stop for the latter.
A portion of the door casing is cut away so that the block 16 does not project to any material extent beyond the casing, but the member 20 extends outwardly and lies in the path of movement of the flange 11. The member 20 is of such length in respect to the distance between the two retainers for the locking bolt 13 that it resiliently engages the door in either position and prevents rattling. As in operation the member 20 will wear more at one edge of the end face than at the opposite edge, it will be noted that my improved device provides means whereby the wear may be distributed. The block 16 may be taken off, the plate 23 slipped out, the member 20 removed, and turned through The parts may be then re-assembled and the device replaced in position. Any suitable means may be employed for holding the block in position, as for instance, screws extending through a pair of screw holes 25. It will also be noted that the stops 19 are integral with the block and as thev are merely end tion with other parts to take up lost motion or prevent rattling.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An anti-rattling device including a block having a bore therethrough provided with longitudinal grooves terminating at a short distance from one end or the bore, a cupshaped member slidably mounted within said bore and having flanges extending into said grooves, a spring normally tending to hold said flanges'at theends of said grooves, and a removable member forming a stop for one end of the spring.
2. An anti-rattling device including block having a bore therethrough provided with grooves extending lengthwise thereof and terminating at a short distance from one end of the bore, a cup-shaped member slidable within said bore, means carried by said member and engaging in said grooves nesgeae slidably mounted within said bore and having means for engaging with said member to prevent rotation of said member and to limit the movement in one direction, a spring for yieldingly resisting movement of said member in the opposite direction, and a plate carried by said block and slidable in a direction at right angles to the axis 01 said bore, and serving as a stop for one end of said spring.
4-. The combination with a bore casing having a pair of door catch retainers and a door having a retaining bolt and a flange, or an anti-rattling device carried by said door casing and having a spring pressed plunger member in the path of movement ot said flange, and having a range of movement greater than the distance between said retainers.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York this 17th day of May, A. D. 1926.
