- J. JUNKUNC LOCK Filed Jan. 17. 1924 AME- Patented Nov. Z3, 1926.
JOI-IN JUNKUNC, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOCK.
Application filed January 17, 1924, serial No. ceases.
This invention relates to locks, more particularly those of the type in which a curved bolt is slidably connected to a barrel and is held in locking position by mechanism within the barrel.
The principal objects of the invention are to improve, simplify and cheapen the construction of such locks.
Other and further important objects Vof this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the drawings and accompanying specification.
` The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter ff more fully described.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lock constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section through the lock in closed position.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the lock in open position.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of I- Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of one of the parts.
As shown on the drawings:
The lock comprises a case hardened barrel or casing 10 having two parallel cylindrical recesses 11 and 12 for the reception of the ends 14 and 15 of the curved bolt 13. One of these ends 15 is formed with a portion 1G oia reduced diameter to enable a threaded pin 17 to be inserted opposite such reduced part to prevent complete withdrawal of the bolt while allowing the latter to rotate when in its extended position. Extending outwardly from this reduced part 16 is a attened portion 18 adapted to allow the bolt to be slid into locking position.
In the recess 12 is arranged a spring 19 adapt-ed to move the bolt into unlocked position as soon as it is released.
The bolt is held in locked position by a pair of balls 2O adapted to enter recesses 2l in the ends of the bolt. These balls are held in engagement with these recesses by a re- .ciprocable member 22, the end of which is formed with two arcuate recesses 23 to allow such end to pass between the balls as shown in Figure 2.
The member 22 is slidably arranged in a cylindrical recess 24. In this recess is arranged a sleeve 25 held in position by a set screw 26. This set screw is inserted from the recess 11 so that it can only be reached when the lock is open. W'ithin this sleeve is the rotatable tumbler 27 having a slot 28 for the reception of a key.
Around the inner end of the tumbler is a sleeve 29 having projections 30 adapted to engage slots in the periphery of the member 22. These projections arevflattened after the member 22 has been brought into engagement so as to form a T-head which securely holds the parts together.
The sleeve 29 is cut away longitudinally on opposite sides to receive projections 31 on thesleeve 25 so that while the sleeve 29 is free to reciproca-te it cannot rotate within the barrel 10.
Between the tumbler 27 and the sleeve 29 vis arrange-d a spring 32 which tends-to force the latter, and the member 22 attached thereto, towards the balls 20. For moving the sleeve 29 in the opposite direction this sleeve is formed with oblique cam surfaces 33 adapted to be engaged by pins 34 on the tumbler 27 when the latter is rotated by its key. Shoulders on the sleeve 25 are provided to engage the pins 34 and thereby limit the range of movement of the tumbler.
To hold the balls more securely in locky ing position recesses 35 are provided at the end of the recess 24.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention. and I thereforedo not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
l. A; lock comprising a barrel, a curved bolt slidably connected thereto having a re cess therein, a ball within said barrel adapted to enter said recess when the bolt is in lock ing position, a member reciprocable within the barrel parallel to the bolt adapted to move behind the ball when the latter enters said recess to retain the ball in engagement with the bolt, and means for reciprocating said member.
2. A lock comprising a barrel, a curved bolt slidably connected thereto having a recess therein, a ball within said barrel adapted to enter said recess when the bolt is in locking position, a member reciprocable within the barrel parallel to the bolt adapted to move behind the ball when the latter enters said recess to retain the ball in engagement with the bolt, a spring` for mov ing said member in one direction and key operated means for movingl it in the opposite direction.
8. A lool; comprising a barrel liavinorecesses therein adapted to receive the enils 'ol-t a curved bolt, said ends ,having recesses therein, a pair of balls Within said barrel and between said ends, 'adapted to enter the last -mentioned recesses, a member reciprocable Within tlie barrel parallel to the bolt adapted to 'separate said balls to retain the latter in engagement Witl'irthe ends of the bolt and means for reciproeatingsaid member.
4. A lock comprising a barrel having recesses therein adapted to*l receive tlie .ends of a curved bolt, said ends;liavinhgrecesses therein, a pair of balls Witliin said barrel and between said ends adapted to enter the last mentioned recesses, a member recipre cable Within the barrel parallel to tlie boli; adapted to separate saidloalls to retain the if llatter in engagement with the ends 'of the bolt, a rotatable tumbler Withinsaid barrel,
vmember reeiprocable ivi having a recess extending therein parallel to the flat sides of the barrel, a curved bolt.
