Description

rNvENToR' L 7157 CM ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPHINE N. AMES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,433, dated May 18, 1875; application filed Aprn 7, 1815.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, J osEPHINE N. AMES,
- of New York city, and State of New York,
have invented a certain new and uset'ul Improvement in Combined Corset and Skirt-Supporter, of which the following is a specitication The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a corset, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure lis a representation of back or rear view of my corset. Fig. 2 is a front view of same.
The body of my corset is made as usual in two parts of equal size and shape, the fronts A Aextending down the usual length. The side parts B B extend down only to the waist, and have suitable gores for the bust. At the back the two parts are connected and adjusted by means of elastic straps G C, and buckles U C. These straps expand with each respiration, allowing perfect breathing, and on any sudden exertion do not confine heart and lungs. The muscles of the back are also thereby permitted free action and perfect development.
The corset is suspended from the shoulders by means of braces D D, which aid the expansion of the chest to its natural width, prevent stooping injuriously, and, together with the corset, give support to the bust, thereby preserving elegance of form and insuring perfect lit in dresses.
To the waist of the corset are attached adjustable straps E E for attaching the skirts, thereby lifting the weight of the clothes from vital organs to the natural supportthe shouldersleaving the lower part ot' the body free for both internal and external action.
The construction of the corsetbody A B removes all light pressure from the abdornnal organs, thereby permitting their natural growth and action. It removes pressure from the nervous plexuses situated about the waist, controlling the vital organs of the abdomen.
By thus relieving the entire body ot' abnormal pressure healthy circulation is promoted, digestion not impeded, and cold feet, backaohe, hysteria, palpitation ot' the heart, 8vo., if not cured, are at least not induced.
I am aware that shoulder-braces and skirtsupporters attached to corsets are not new of themselves, and therefore do not claim them, broadly; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The corset, having its body A B cut and constructed with its bottom line a b curved in the manner shown and described, for the purposes set forth, and having the shoulder straps and braces D D, the connecting-straps and buckles C, skirt-supporting straps and buckles E, all constructed, combined, and arranged as specified and shown.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence oftwo subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPHINE N. AMES. Witnesses:
