Description

H. M. STURGIS MOP Filed April 20. 1925 1 '1 INVENTOR A TTORNE Y of which is a circumferential bead 2 Patented June ,28, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Application filed April 20, 1925. Serial No. 24,466.
This invention relates to mops, and the primary object is to provide a novel form of mop swab and handle connection. In other words, the importance of the invention resides more particularly in the manner in which the handle may be conveniently attached to the swab and the convenient way in which the swab strands may be held. in place.
The novelty of the invention will be described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a handle and part of a mop swab, the connection being shown partly in elevation and partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the mop showing the handle detached, part of the ferrule forming the connection between the mop and the handle being broken away, and
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference 1 designates a conical tube or socket member at the reduced end having its edge 3 bent inwardly to hold a discs against the shoulder 5 formed by the juncture of the bead with constricted or reduced end of the tapered or conical socket mem- 7 her. The disc i is provided with a central threaded opening 6 to receive a threaded pin 7 in the tapered end 8 of the mop handle 9 so that when the mop handle is turned to ,7
cause the threaded pin 7 to engage the threaded opening 6, it will draw the tapered end of the handle into the socket member so that it will be frictionally held in the socket member, the wedging action' of the tapered end of the handle being sufficient to cause it to tightly bind against the inner wall of the socket or ferrule so that danger of accidental displacement will be entirely avoided.
In order to secure the mop swab 10 to the ferrule and thereby operatively associate it with the handle, I provide a looped wire 11 in the form of a staple with end portions 12 and 13 passing through the disc 4c and having their terminals 14 and 15 bent over upon the upper face of the disc so that liability of displacement will be avoided, The swab will therefore be securely fastened tothe ferrule, and since the handle may be efficient ly fastened to the ferrule, it will be apparent that a firm, satisfactory connection may be made.
When it is desired to remove the handle, this can be done by exerting sufficient twisting strain upon the handle, upon the ferrule, or upon both in opposite directions. As the pin unscrews, the tapered end of the handle will be forced out of frictional contact with the tapered ferrule, and as soon as the frictional contact of the handle with the ferrule has been broken, the removal of the handle will be a comparatively easy matter.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A mop comprising a conical ferrule having an annular internal socket, a disc engaged in said socket and having an axial threaded opening, a mop swab secured to said disc, a handle having atapered end receivable in the conical ferrule, and a threaded pin in the end of the handle en: gageable with the threaded opening of the disc whereby upon screwing the threaded pin in the opening the tapered end of the handle will be drawn into frictional engagement with the ferrule.
2. A mop comprising a conical ferrule, a disc closing the end of the ferrule and provided with a threaded opening, a looped wire carried by the disc, a swab fastened to the disc by the looped wire, a tapered handle, and a threaded pin in the handle engaging in the threaded opening in the disc.
3. A mop, comprising a tubular tapered ferrule having a spun-over edge providing an annular groove, a. disc in the groove and carried by the ferrule and provided with a central threaded opening, a looped wire having end portions passing through the disc and bent over on the inner face thereof,
a swab carried by the looped portion of the wire, a tapered handle receivable in the ferrule, and a threaded pin on the end of the handle engageable in the threaded opening in the ferrule disk.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
