ATTACHMENT FOB ELECTRIC PLUGS.
Application filed December 29, 1925.
This invention relates to an attachment for use in removing an electric plug from its socket or the like.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a simple device of this character that can be made to sell for a few cents, and that when in place will naturally be used by anybody who wishes to draw out a plug or to inscrew it, thus avoiding the twisting or pulling of the wires or cables.
The invention involves the provision of a handle or bail securely attached to the plug and projectin outwardly at the center where it will naturally be in position for anyone to grasp.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a side view of an ordinary electric plug with a screw-threaded portion attached thereto in the ordinary way and showing a preferred form of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same at right angles thereto with the screw plug removed showing the use of the device for another type of connector; and
Fig. 3 is a plan.
It is well Umown that electric plugs used for domestic purposes are of two kinds which either screw out or are pulled out directly, and that in either case those who handle them frequently remove them by means of'the electric wires which naturally pass through them, thus bending these wires and putting heavy strains on them which cause them to give out quickly. This invention is designed to avoid these difliculties as stated above.
The invention is shown as applied to a plug 10 having a pair of metal contacts 11 projecting from it and connected with the electric wires or cable 12 which extends out through an opening 13 in the center of the plug or the cap thereof.
In Fig. 1 I have shown a screw plug 14 as attached to the metal contacts 11. The attachments which is the subject of this invention can be used in either case and in fact in all cases.
This attachment comprises a band 15 Serial No. 78,225.
at its ends in parallel planes separated from each other. They are connected by a screw 17 and nut 18 to holdthis wire around the circumference of the plug 10. i This can be fastened on tightly around the outside diameter of the plug or if there is a ledge around it, under the ledge, but it should be fastened tight enough to hold with a firm grip.
To this wire 15 I attach a bail or handle 20. This is of U-shape formation with closed eyes in the ends which receive the wire on one side and screw 17 through them. This bail is used in practice as a handle to pull the plug out or screw it out or in as the case may be.
It will be seen that this handle always sticks out from the center of the device approximately over the central perforation for the wires where it cannot fail to be noticed. This resultis provided for in the way it is attached to the circular wire. It is not pivoted so that it can get far out of position. Therefore it will be used naturally as intended, and users will not have to get used to it and will not forget to use it. Byit the plug is handled efliciently and it entirely does away with the use of the wires for pulling the plug out.
Although I have illustrated and described only one form of the invention, I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made V therein by any person skilled in the art with out departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore I do not wish to be limited to the exact details herein shown and described, but what I do' claim is 1. The combination with an electric plug, of a wire extending around the plug and having a bolt at its ends for pulling the ends together, and a wire bail or handle having eyes at its ends, one receiving said bolt and the other receiving the wire at a point opposite the bolt, whereby the bail can be used for manipulating the plug.
2. The combination with an electric plug, of a wire of circular form extending around the plug and having a bolt at one side for pulling its ends together to cause it to grip the plug tightly at its circumference, and a U-shaped wire bail or handle having closed eyes at its ends, one receiving said bolt and the other receivin the circular wire at a point opposite the olt, whereby said bail 1s 5 held in a position substantially in a diametrical plane xojeetirgower and-beyond the central opening in the plug for the electric conducting wires, and whereby it cannot get far out of that position but can be used for rum nipulating the plug. 10
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
WILLIAM J. s'ro'rT.
