CORPORATION OE OHIO a coRn VPROTEC'I'OR Vide a simple, durable and economical insert plug in which the conductor is protectedfrom all strain at the terminal connection, and further, is so constructed as to prevent sharp bends andkinks in the conductor adjacent the plug.
My invention comprises in general a twopart, electric plug, one part forming a support fon the usual prongs adaptedto fit into the customary outlets and a second part provided with a bell-.shaped end intended to prevent sharp bends in the conductor.
Two parts of the plug co-operate to expand radially a sleeve made of soft material, such as rubber, against the conductor thus anchoring it securely relative to the plug.
In the drawing wherein I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, the main part 10 of the plug is shown made of insulating material such as rubber -or the material known under the trade name as bakelite. This body portion 10 acts as a support for the prongs 11 to which the terminals of the conductor 12 are attached by screws 12.
The body portion 10 is provided with a central aperture through which the conductor 12 extends and secured therein there is a metal sleeve 13 extending axially and provided on its outer surface with screw threads 14. The sleeve 13 is further provided with a bevelled shoulder 15, the purpose of which will be set forth later.
The second part 16 of the plug is formed of insulating material preferably of the moulded variety such as hard rubber orthe aforesaid bakelite, and is constructed at one end with a flaring central bore 17, which on account of the rounded surface it presents to the conductor 12 prevents any sharp kinks or bends. The part 16 is provided with an .sleeve 13 and the shoulder 19 of the part 16 enlarged bore 18 and a shoulder 19 and is further provided on its interior surface with screw threads for cooperation with the threads formed on the metal sleeve 13.
Placed between the shoulder 15 on the is a sleeve 20 formed of easily compressible material such as softrubber, and a metal sleeve 21, both of which are of a size to slide easily over the cord conductor.
In using this device the soft rubber sleeve 20 and the metal sleeve 21 are slipped over the conductor 12, the end of which is then inserted through, the central opening in the part 10,-first placing on the cord the par: 16 of the plugn,
The screw threads of the part 16 engage the threads of the sleeve 13 and by this means the shoulders 10 and 15 are drawn together thus compressing the soft rubber sleeve 20 in a longitudinal direction which causes it to expand radially against the metal sleeve 13 and theexterior surface of the conductor 12, thus clamping the conductor relative to the plug which prevents strain from reaching the terminals of the conductor 12 or any movement of the conductor 12 relative to the plug which might damage the electric connection between the two.
What I claim as my invention and desire so to secure by Letters Patent is connecting means for attachment to and protection of an electric conductor comprising a main body portion of insulating material having contact members rigidly 5 mounted thereon, a metal sleeve permanently connected to said body portion and adapted to receive the conductor, a second part of insulating material threaded upon and substantially enclosing said metal sleeve, said sleeve and said second part having annular internal shoulders, and means within said sleeve and controlled by relative movementof said shoulders for grippingly securing said conductor when said second part is screwed on said sleeve. 1
Signed at North Canton, in the county of Stark, and State of Ohio, this 28th day of October, A. D. 1927.
