UNITED. STATES JOSEF SUBERT, OF OAK PARK ILLINOIS.
' CHIMNEY-DRAFT REGULATOR.
Application filed October 1, 1924. Serial No. 741,074.
This invention'relates to new and useful improvements in chimney draft control devices and has among its objects to provide a device of this character which shall not only be eflicient in operation, but which shall be simple in construction so that the cost of manufacture shall be comparatively low and which simplicity shall further contribute to a low maintenance of same.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of this character with a substantially conical smolt'e or gas deflector which shall impose the minimum of obstruction to a tree flow ot' the gases or smoke from the chimney.
Another object of my invention is to provide the conical deflector with suitable supports on the body of the device and with a vertical passage within which is a rotatably mounted and vertically disposed rod forming a mast for the air vane which controls the position of the arcuate deflector for the air currents and which deflector is rigidly mounted to the mast for simultaneous movement therewith. j
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of angularly bent ends for the arcuate deflector whereby the air currents will further be deflected from the center of the chimney.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel combination and construction of the parts and members, one form of which is shown in the ac companying drawings, described in the attached specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a chimney draft control embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the conical gas deflector and protector for the open topped body of the device, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section View of Figure 1 taken on line 33.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the wall of a chimney and in this instance of square cross section within which I support the rusto-conical body 11 of my draft control. The body 11 is open at both ends and is supported at its lower end within the lower flanged edge 12 of the lining 12 having an upper flange 12 which bears upon the top of the chimney Wall. To seal the openings between the top of the lining l2 and the frusto-conical body 11, and further to protectthe top of the chimney'wall 10, I provide a flat cover plate 13 which is soldered to the trusto-conical body 11 and flanged at 13 at its outer edges.
Supported on the body 11 with suitable brackets 14, I mount a hollow conical deflector 15 with its lower end slightly depending into the body 11.
This deflectorlo comprises a lower inverted substantially conical casing 15 and conically formed top cover 15 which is flanged over the lower casing 15 The purpose of this deflector 15 is to provide a conical deflector for the gases from the chimney which shall impose the minimum of obstruction to same and which shall also provide a'means of deflector for the rain and sun rays from the top opening of the body 11.
The deflector 15 is further provided with a tubular member 16 which is supported within the upper and lower ends of the deflector 15. The purpose of this member 16 is to reentorce the body of the deflector 15 and to provide a bearing support for the mast 17. It is obvious that this member 16 could be omitted, but I prefer to employ it in my device for thepurposes stated.
The mast 17 is rotatably mounted and is slotted at its lower end to provide a connection for the arm 18 which is upwardly disposed along the conical surface of the deflector 15 and connects at its upper end to the semi-circular air deflector 19.
The arm 18 preferably comprises a pair of adjacent plates 18 having outwardly bent stiflener flanges 18 and additional flanges 18 for rivet connection to the air deflector l9.
The air deflector 19 is substantially a single piece of semi-circularly bent metal having its vertical edges further angularly bent, as at 19 for the purpose of further deflecting air currents from the center of the chimney.
To the top of the mast 17 I rigidly attach a vane 20 which obviously provides resist.- ance to the air currents for the purpose of operating the rotatablemast 17 for controlling the shielding anddeflecting action of the vertically disposed deflector 15.
It is believed that the construction of the invention and its operation is readily apparent from the above description and accompanying drawings, hence a more extended description is omitted.
I claim:
1. In a chimney draft control, the combination of av body adapted for mounting on the top of a chimney, a deflector having an inverted conical surface and being mounted above said body and rigidly thereto, a tubular member extending verticaily and centrally through said deflector, a rotatably mounted mast comprising a round bar passing through said tubular member and projecting above and below said deflector, a shield posi tioned between said bony and said deflector, said shield being "igidly connected to said mast below said deflector, and means responsive to wind pressure for controlling the position of said shield, said means comprising a sheet metal vane rigidly connected to the upper portion of said mast.
2. In a chimney draft control, the combination of a body adapted for mounting on the top of a chimney, a deflector having an inverted conical surface and being mounted above said body and rigidiy thereto, a tubular member extending vertically and centrally through said deflector, a rotatably mounted mast comprising a round bar passing through said tubular member and projecting above and below said deflector, an arcuate shield positioned between said body and said deflector, said arcuate shield being rigidly connected to said mast below said deflector, and means responsive to wind pressure for controlling the position of said arcuate shield, said means comprising a sheet metal vane rigidly connected to the upper portion of said mast.
3. In a chimney draft control, the comoination of a body adapted for mounting on top of a chimney, a deflector having an inverted conical surface and being mounted 40 above said body and ri idly thereto, a: tubular member extending vertically and centrally through said deflector, a rotatably mounted mast comprising a round bar passing through said tubular member and projecting 45 above and below said deflector, an arcuate snield having its side vertical edges bent angularly to its arcuate surface. said arcuate shield being rigidly connected to said mast below said deflector, and means responsive to 50 wind pressure for controlling the position of said arcuate shield, said means comprising a sheet metal vane rigidly connected to the upper portion of said mast.
4-. In a chimney draft control, the com- 55 bination of a tubular body adapted for mounting on the top of a chimney, a deflector having an inverted conical surface rigidly mounted above and to said tubular body and in concentric relation to same, a tubular ea member extending vertically and centrally through said deflector, a rotatably mounted mast comprising a round bar passing through said tubular member and projecting above and below said deflector, an arcuate shield, {is
an arm having a flanged rigid connection with said shield and a rigid connection with the lower extension of said mast below said deflector, and a vane rigidly connected to the upper projection of said mast for rotating w JOSEF sunnnr.
