Ventilating apparatus of the above-de. scribed type 1s illustrated in Letters Patent to Robert A. Ilg N o. 1,482,398, dated `February 5, 1924, ahd No. 1,525,649, dated F ebru-` ary 10, 1925. In the last-mentioned patent there is disclosed anautomatic device for locking the shutters in closed position when the fan is idle and automatically releasing the-shutters .when the fan is started in operation, theblast created by the fan actuating the locking mechanism to release position.
The mam utilities of a shutter lock are to '25 prevent rattling of the shutter` vanos and partial opening of the same under the influence of outside winds or interior drafts tending to How through the opening, and also to maintain the openingclosed against weather influences when the use of the ventilator is not desired or re uired. Our present invention relates main y to a new and improved shutter lock that is not dependent upon the blast of the fan for its releasev but is manually actuated to both llocking and release position, and one object of the invention is `to .provide a very simple' and eliicient shutter lock of the character vlast described. In the opposite vertical members of the frame 6 are mounted, on horizontal spindles 7, a group of shutter vanes 8. `These vanes are connected for simultaneous opening and closing movements by elbow levers 9, the lower arm of each lever lying in a pocket 10 formed on the rear side of the shutter vane and its upper arm being pivoted to a vertically .disposed link or shift rod 11 lying inwardly of onervertical side wall of the frame 6. Describin now our` improved shutter locking mec anism, on the lower end of the vertica-Il disposedlink or shift rod 11 is a short orizontal extension or foot 15; the rod 11 and its foot 15 preferably being continuous or integral and' taking the. form of an angle ba". The joint between the vertical and horizontal members 11 and 15 may be reinforced by a gusset plate 16. The horizontal limb of the foot member 15 is aperf -tured and slidably mounted on a vertical and between 4 the .building anA ordinary electric snapv switch 18 which opens and closes the circuit through the fan motor 13. 19 is the switch button fast on the outer end of the usual switch stem or shaft 20. In accordance with our present invention this stem or shaft 20 is extended through the switch and through a suitable hole and bushing 20 in the wall 5 to a point within the shutter frame 6; and on the inner end of the switch shaft 20 is mounted a transverse bar 21 formed on both ends as wiper cams 22 which lie beneath and in the vertical plane of the foot 15.
Figs. 3 and 4 show in full lines the locking device in shutter-locking position, wherein the lifting and locking bar 21 is vertical and supports the link 11 in elevated position, which-corresponds to the closed position of the shutter vanes. In this position of the lifting and lockingl bar the motor circuit is open atthe switc 18.- A quarter turn of the switch button closes the motor circuit and at the same time swings the lifting and locking bar 21 to the horizontal position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3,.which leaves'the link 11 free to drop and the shutter vanes to open under the blast of the fan aided by the gravity of the link. The next quarter turn o the switch button, which opens the motor circuit again swings the liftingand locking bar- 21 to vertical position, such movement raising the link 11 and closing and locking the shutter vanes. By thus directly connecting the shutter locking device to the motor switch, the necessity of separate manually operabledevices for energizing and de-energizing the motor and for throwing and releasing the shutter lock is avoided. The rounded cam-shaped ends 22 of the locking bar serve to effect the linal full closing and locking movement o-the shutter vanes. 4
We have herein shown and described one simple -and practical physical embodiment of the principle of the invention, but manifestly changes in structural details and form and arrangement of the parts may be resorted to Without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof. It is also evident that thc described locking 'means may be usefully employed without the fan .and its motor and with a shutter having a single vane. Hence we reserve all such variations and modifications as fall within the spirit and purview of the appended claims.
We claim- 1. In a ventilating appliance of the character described, the combination of a frame, a group of horizontal shutter vanes hinged Vin said frame, levers connecte-d to said vanes respectively, a vertically disposed' link connecting said levers for simultaneous movement, said link having a horizontal foot, a-
rotatable lifting and locking bar underlying said foot in sliding contact with sole of the latter, and manually operable means for turning said bar.
2. In a Ventilating ap liance ofthe character described, the com ination of a frame, a group of horizontal shutter vanes hinged in said frame, levers connected to and extending rearwardly of: said vanes respectively, a vertically disposed link pivotally connected to said levers, said link having a horizontal foot, a rotatable lifting and locking bar underlying said foot formed with cam-shaped ends adaptedto alternately engage with and lift'said foot as said bar is rotated, and manually operable means for turning said bar.
3.
