For certain purposes, particularly when the deviceis to be used as a nozzle for garden hose a narrow central bore or `aperture 27 is preferably formed through the head ofthe valve 9 so that the inlet passage 6 is'in permanent'communication with the internal passage 20 through the valve stem. In some cases the passage 27 may be eliminated, so that when the parts are in the position seenin Figure 2 the discharge of liquid is entirely eut off. j
The internally threaded rear end of the adjusting sleeve member 16 is preferably screwed onto a threaded rinor or lock nut 28 which freely but closely enclrcles the socket member 2 and prevents leakage as well as serving as a stop to prevent the sleevefrom being entirely withdrawn from the fitting.
. The socket member 2, the nut 28 and the sleeve 16 ymay be each provided with milled or like external faces as shown to facilitate assemblage, adjustment and dismantling of the parts.
Vith the device in use the dischargeof liquid may be restricted to a narrow but elongated jet by moving the adjusting sleeve 16 to its innermost position as .seen in Figure 2 so that owing to the engagementof the Asleeve wall 1.7 with the front end of the valve stem the rear face 23 of the valve head contacts with the seating 19 formed at the `front end of the socket member 2, thus cutting oli' the water inlet passage 6 fromthe passages 11 and the radial ports `22 of the valve. The water is Athus'permitted tovissue only through thesmall central aperture 27 which is` always open and enables a long `narrow jet of liquid to be delivered even with a very low water pressure. With the IVhen it is desired to project the liquid in a larger jet `the adjusting sleeve 16 is screwed outwardly so that the valve head is forced by the water pressure to leave'the seating 19 of the socket member 2. By positioning the sleeve 16 as sten in Figure 4 such outward movement of the valve is arrested before the shoulder 241 ofthe valve head engages the seating 26 at lthe inner face of the valve carrying member7 so that the liquid passes through the radial ports 22 as well as the-.aperture 27 into the internal passagev 2O of the valve stem and thence out through the discharge orifice 18 in the end wall 17 of thev adjusting sleeve. In this position the outer end of the valve stem abuts against the sleeve wall 17; and as Said stem is of greater diameter thanV the discharge orifice 18 and is concentrically aligned therewith, the passages 11'are cut off from the` dischargeorifice so that a straight jet of water from the hollow` valve stem Vis produced.
In either of the positions illustrated in Figures 2 and 4 the bevelled front edge 10 ofthe valve stem engages within .and against the inner edge `of the discharge orifice 18,
thus positively preventing side play of the way of the valveupassage 20.
Upon screwing the adjusting sleeve further-outwardly as seen in Figure 3, the water pressure forces the valve head against its seating V26 at the inner faceof the valve yadjusting sleeve is now clear of the adjacent end of the valve stemso that the discharge orifice 18ris placedincommunication with the inclined passages 11 in the valve carrying member. As the `wat/er passes through these latter passages it isrsubjected to a whirling action; andas it issues from the outer .end off `the passages 11 it impinges against the sleeve wall 17 whereby it is caused to combine withthe jet passingfrom the central aperture 27 and to issue from the discharge orificeV 18 in the Yform `of a iinely atomized sidewardly extending spray wherein the water is effectively distributed ovcrthewhole central area within the marginal limita of the spray as previously mentioned.n By manipulating the sleeve 16 so as to vary the distance between the wall 17 and the front end `of the valvestem the angle and width f of the spray may bereadily.alteredaccording to requirements. An improved jet and spray producing nozzle or device comprising a valve having a hollow stem adapted to slide longitudinal-y ly in the direction ot' the liquid llow under the pressure of the liquid passing through the nozzle, said valve having an inlet'opening to said stem at its rear end; an inlet passage aligning with said inlet opening and controlled by said valve; amanuahy operable adjusting sleeve enclosing said valve, said sleeve having a central discharge oritice formed in alignment with the valve stem through a transverse front Wall which is adapted to engage and move said stem in the opposite direction-and to retain the valve in various adjusted positions against the action of the liquid pressure; and a valve carrying member embodying a partition spaced from said transverse wall and having a central opening in which said valve stem is adapted Vto slide and also having a series ot' .liquid passages, said valve-carrying member having an internal chamber behind said partition into which said inlet passage andL said liquid passages open, communication between said liquid passages and said discharge oriice by Way of such space being cut off by the engagement of the lirontl end of the valve stem with said transverse wall.

An nnproved'jet andspray producing nozzle or device comprising a valve having adjusting sleeve enclosing said valve, saidk sleeve having a discharge orilice formed in alignment With the valve stem through a llO vide con'nnunication between said ychamber transverse front wall which is adapted to engage and move said stem in the opposite direction and to `retain the valve in various adjusted positions against the action of the liquid pressure; a partitionspaced from said transverse wall` and having an opening wherein the valve stem is slidably arranged and also having aseries of liquid passages formed through it, said partition defining a chamber behind it into which said inlet passage and said liquid passages open, communication betweensaidliquid passages and said discliai'georiiice by way of such space being out off by the engagement of the front end of the valve stein with said transverse wall of the adjusting sleeve ;V a valve seating formed on the rear face of said partition;
and a head on said valve stem for coaction.

An improved jet and spray producing nozzle ordevice comprising an externallythreaded valve-carrying member having a central opening therethrough; a valve having a hollow stem slidably mounted in said opening and adapted toibe moved forwardly by the pressure of the liquid passing through the nozzle, said valve having an inletv opening to said stem at its rear end ainanually operable, internally-threaded adjusting sleeve engaging the external thread of vsaid ,valvecarrying member, said sleeve havingv a cenj loo tral discharge oriiice formed in alignment with the valve stem through a transverse front wall which is adapted to engage and move said stem rearwardly and to retain the valve in various adjusted positions against the action of the liquid pressure; said valvecarrying member having a series of liquid passages which open at their front ends into a chamber between that member and said transverse sleeve wall and are disposed substantially tangential to the side wall ont such chamber, and which open at their rear ends into a valve chamber behind the valve-carrying member, whereby communication between said tangential passages and said discharge orifice will be cut oit' by the engagement of the front end of the valve stem with said transverse wall; a socket member, between which and the valve-carrying member the valve chamber is located, having a central liquid inlet passage which opens into said valve chamber and which is disposed in line with said inlet opening and controlled by said valve, said valve-carrying member having an internal screw thread engaging an external thread on the Jforward end of said socket member, the rear end of the latter being adapted for connection to awhose director or supply pipe; and an externally-turead-A` ed lock nut or ring freely surrounding said socket member and. engaging the rear portion of the internal thread oi said adjusting sleeve.

An improved jet and spray producing nozzle comprising in combination an adjusting sleeve having at its front end a transverse wall provided with a central discharge orilice; a valve-carrying member housed within said sleeve and having a series of liquid passages which establish communication between said discharge oriiice and a liquid inlet passage of the device; and a longitudinally-sliding valve centrally disposed within member screwed to the 'lront end of said socket member and forming a valve chamber therewith, the 'forward portion oi said valvecarrying member forming a partition through which extends a series of passages; a valve longitudinally slidable within a central opening` of said valve-carrying member in the direction orn the liquid flow under the pressure of the liquid passing through the the nozzle, said valve having a head which is located within said valve chamber `for movement between two opposite seatings which are engaged by said head in eXtreme positions of the valve; said valve embodying a hollow stem having ports formed in it to establish communication between the valve chamber and the interior of the hollow stem; and a screw-threaded adjusting sleeve surrounding all the above-named parts and having at its front end a transverse wall provided with a central discharge orifice, said wall being` spaced from said partition to provide a front chamber into which said series of passages opens, said discharge'orifice being in alignment with the outer end of said hollow valve stem and having a diameter of less than the external diameter or width of said stem.
