Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,278, dated May 11, 1875; application filed J auuary 30, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. SUNDERMAN, of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Whip- Socket and Rein-Holder 5 and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a back view, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in all the figures.
A is the plate or frame, provided with holes a, so that it may be screwed onto the dashboard, or any other suitable part of the carriage. This plate has a projecting tongue, A, which is beveled on the front side. 0 is the rigid part of the whip-socket, which is secured to the plate A by being cast in one piece with it, or by riveting, or in any other suitable manner. 0 is the movable part of the socket, which swings upon a pivot 0, secured on the front part of the frame, by means of the angular lever D, to which it is rigidly attached. B is a lever, pivoted to the side of the socket-piece G at b, and provided with the tongue B, which is beveled to correspond with the bevel in A.
Fig. 1 represents the socket open to receive the whip. When this is inserted into the socket it will, by pressing against the lower part of the movable piece 0, cause this to swing upon the pivot 0 until it occupies the position indicated by the dotted lines, thus clasping or locking the whip in the socket at the top rim, indicated by the letter at. When it is desired to release and withdraw the whip, the thumb-piece D of the lever D is pressed outward from the socket, which swings the movable piece 0 back into its original open position, and relinquishes its hold upon the handle of the whip.
Figure 3 shows the rein-holder formed by the tongues A and B, and lever B open to receive the reins, which are inserted sidewise between the two tongues. Pulling on the reins will cause the movable tongue B, which forms part of the lever B, to shut in and upon the stationary tongue A, keeping the reins firmly grasped'between the two. The grasp becomes firmer the greater the pulling on the reins. When it is desired to release the latter a slight pressure 011 the lower part of the lever B will open the tongues or jaws A B, and the reins are easily Withdrawn.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- 6111)- l. The combination of the plate A, having the socket-pieceG and laterally-projecting arm A rigidly secured thereto, with the angular lever D D pivoted at c, and carrying the swinging socket-piece O, substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
2. The combination of the plate A, having the socket-piece O, and laterally-projecting arm A rigidly secured thereto, with the angular lever B B pivoted at b, substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
3. The combination of the plate A, having the socket-piece U and laterally-projecting arm A rigidly secured thereto, with the angular lever D D carrying the socket-piece C, and with the angular lever B B, said levers pivoted, respectively, at c and b, substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
