This invention relates to improvements inv door operating mechanism. n
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved door operating mechanism well adapted for the opening of sliding doors.
Second, to provide anA improved door operating mechanism for sliding doors which is comparatively simple in structure and one in which the parts are so arranged that they are not likely to get out of order or 'become inoperative in use..
Third, to provide an improved door operating mechanism which constitutesa -means for locking the-door inclosed position.
Gbjects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation of my invention will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my yinvention the devices and means described in the following specification.` The invention is clearly -dened and pointed out in the claims. A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a .part of this application, in which:

In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little -arrows'at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts in all of the views. Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the door to be operated. Above and parallel to the plane of travel'ofthe door I mount a supporting beam 2, one of the supporting brackets for this beam being shown at 3, On
the beam 2 I mount a supporting bracketv 4 for the motor 5, the bracket also having a bearin 6 for the shaft 7. On one end of this sha is a gear 8 meshing with a pinion 9 on the motor shaft l0. On the other end `of the shaft is a sprocket Wheel 11. c
The supporting beam 2 also' carries a stub shaft l2 for the sprocket wheel 13, this stub shaft being mounted inl a slot 14 in the` beam for adjustment to tension or tighten thesprocketchain 15 which 'coacts with the sprockets 11 and 13. The stub shaft 12 has s laterally disposed arms 16 with slots 17 engaged by the bolts 18 for adjustably securing the stub shaft to the beam,.the slot 14l permitting this adjustment. The adjusting screw 19 is secured to the lug 20 'on the stub shaft and is passed through an ear 21 on the beam, the adjusting nut 22 effecting the adjustment and the stub shaft being secured in its adjusted position.
The sprocket chain carries a pin 23 to which the link or ptman 24 is mounted, the
other end of the link being pivotally connected to the upwardly projecting bracket 25 on the door. Thus, when the sprocket 11 is driven through the connections described to the motor, the door is opened and closed.
The motor is vcontrolled by the switch comprising a pair of contacts 26 and 27, the contact 27 bein mounted on the arm 28 of a bail-shaped Iever pivoted at 29 on the bracket 4. -This arm 28 is connected to the armature 30 on the electromagnet 31 in the circuit of a control switch conventionally .shown at 32.' When the lever is raised by the actuation' ofthe electromagnet 31 it is urges the clutch members together.

The spring 36 acts to throw the' detent into engagement with the arm 37 of the lever. The arm 37 and the detent 33 are on the same side of the supporting beam 2 as the sprocket wheels and chain. The switch lever is bail-shaped for convenience in mounting the parts.
The switch lever is urged to its switch opening position by means of the spring 38, :See Fig. I. The detent 33 is released by the trip 39 which is pivoted on the bar 35, the bar having a plurality of holes 40 therein so that the pivot 4l for the trip may be adjusted. 'Ihe trip 39 is adjustably connected by the link 42 to-the detent.
The chai-n l5 is provided with trip lugs 43 and 44 adapted to alternately engage the trip releasing the switch lever and allowing the switch to open, the spring 38 insuring the opening of the switch.
The motor shaft is provided with a brake wheel 45, the brake band 46 being passed over this whee?. and one end being connected to the lug 47 on the -m'otor bracket 4. The other end of the brake band is connected to the switch lever at 48st) that when the swtih is opened the brake is applied to stop the motor and prevent overrunning. The trip lugs 43 and 44 are so disposed relative to the connection of the chains to the door that the door is stopped with the pin 23 in a central position relative to the sprocket wheels as shown in Fig. III so that the door is locked in its closed position to the extent that it is necessary to rotate the driving sprocket ll, a pull or push on the door being ineffective.
The trip 39 is so disposed that after the switch has been opened the momentum of the door is suiiicient to carry the door to completely closed or open position with the pin 23 in a central position relative to one or the other of the sprockets. Adjusting means for the trip are provided to secure the desired result.
To prevent damage or breakage in the event that the door should strike an obstacle when partially opened or closed, the gear 8 is connected to its shaft through a friction clutch conventionally shown at 50. The spring 5l on the projecting end of the slilaft e adjusting nut 52 regulates the tension of this spring.
In the modification shown in Figs. .VIII
to XI, I show my improvements adaptedv to a double door operating mechanism, the doors being indicated at '53. Thismechanism is substantially that described with the'addition of a gear 54 to the shaft 7 and a second gear 55 being provided in mesh with the gear 54 and having a shaft 56 on one end of which is a sprocket wheel 57 corresponding to the sprocket wheel 1l. A second sprocket chain 58 is provided and connected to the second door by a second pitman or link 59. i I
' lVith this arrangement the double doors are operated substantially the sam-e as the single door illustrated in Fig. III.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain other modilications and adaptations which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent is: l
l. In an operating mechanism' fo sliding doors, the combination of a supporting beam disposed in a plane parallel to the plane of travel of the door to be operated, a motor supporting bracket mounted on said beam and provided with a driven shaft bearing, a driven shaft in said bearing and disposed through the beam, av gear on Said driven shaft having a friction clutch driving connection with the shaft, a motor mounted on said bracket and provided with a shaft having a pinion meshing with said gear, a driving sprocket on said driven shaft, a second sprocket mounted on said beam, a sprocket chain on said sprockets provided with a pair of trip lugs, a door operating pitman connected to said chain, a motor control means comprising a switch lever mounte on said bracket, a brake drum on the rxr shaft, a brake band connected at one to said motor supporting bracket and at the other to said switch lever, a spring acting to normally hold said switch lever in switch open position, a detent coacting with said switch lever, a spring urging said detent to engaging position, and a trip. disposed in the path of said trip lugs on said chain and connected to said detent.
2. In an operating mechanism for sliding doors, the combination of a supporting beam disposed in a plane parallel to the plane ofv travel of thedoor to be operated, a motor supporting bracket mounted on said beam and provided with a driven shaft bearing, a driven shaft in said bearing and'disposed through the beam, a gear on said driven shaft, a m'otor mounted on said bracket and provided with a shaft having a pinion meshing with said gear, Ia driving sprocket on said driven shaft, a second sprocket mounted on said beam, a sprocket chain on said sprockets provided with a pair of trip lugs, a door operating pitman connected to said chain, a motor control means comprising a switch lever mounted on said bracket, a spring acting to normally hold said switch lever in switch open position, a detent comounted on said driven shaft, a sprocket.

4. In a door operatipg mechanism, the combination of a 'motor provided with a shaft having a pinion, a driven shaft, a gear on said drivenA shaft meshing with said pinion, sprockets, one, of which is mounted on said driven shaft, a sprocket chain coacting with said sprockets and provided with trip lugs, a door connection on said chain, a motor controlgmeans comprising a switch lever, a spring acting to normally hold said switch lever in switch open position, a detent for holding said switch lever in closed position, a spring urging said detent to engaging position, an adjustably mounted trip disposed in the path of said tripv lug on said chain, and a link adjustably connecting'said trip to said detent.
5. In a door operating mechanism, the combination of a motor provided with a shaft having a pinion and a brake drum, a driven shaft, a gear on said driven shaft meshing with said pinion, said gear having a friction clutch driving connection with the driven shaft, sprockets, one of which is mounted on said driven shaft, a second adjustably mounted sprocket, a` sprocket chain coacting with said sprockets and provided with trip lugs, a door connection on said chain, a motor control switch comprising a switch lever, an electromagnet operativeassociated with said switch lever, a brake band coacting with said brake drum and operatively connected to said switch lever, a detent for holding said switch lever in closed position, and a trip therefor disposed to be actuated by said trip lugs.

In a door operating mechanism,- the combination of a motor provided with a shaft having a pinion, a driven shaft, a gear on said driven shaftmeshing with said pinion, said gear having a friction clutch driving connection withl the driven shaft, sprockets, one of which is mounted on said driven shaft, a second -adjustably mounted sprocket, a sprocket chain coacting with said sprockets and provided with trip lugs, a` door connection "on said chain, a motor control switch comprising a switch lever, an electromagnet operatively associated with said switch lever, a detent for holding said switch lever in closed position, and a trip therefor disposed to be actuated by said trip lugs.
7. In a door operating-mechanism, the combination of a motor, a pair of sprockets, a sprocket chain coacting with said sprockets and provided with a trip lug, a door connection on said chain, a motor control means comprising a switch lever, a spring acting to normally hold said switch lever in switch 'open position, a detent for holding said switch lever in closed position, a spring urging said detent to engaging position, an adjustably mounted trip disposed in the path of said trip lug on said chain, and a link adjustably connecting said trip to said detent.
8. In a door operating mechanism, the combination of a motor, a pair of sprockets, a sprocket chain coacting with said sprockets and provided with a trip lug, a door connection on said chain, a motor con'trol means comprising a switch lever, a spring acting to hold said switch lever in switch open position, a detent for'holding said switch lever in closed position, a spring ioo urging said detent to` engaging position,
and a trip adjustably assoclated with said detent and lying in the path of movement of the said trip lug. s
