This relationship results from the shape of the resilient member 11 which in its free position as shown in Figure'G has a formation presenting in section substantially the shape comprises substantially a three-quarter-circular cylindrical surface with tangential plane-surface forward ex-c tensions thereof. With the clamp assembled but in its free condition as shown in Figure 5 the resilient member 11 has substantiallythe same for.- mation' as before assembly, but is somewhat expanded from its own free formation, by the jaws themselves,'to a larger radius of curvature of its cylindrical portion and produces an inward pressure of the jaws 9 and 10 against each other.
The jaws 9 and 10 may be attached to the member 11 in any convenient manner. In the form here shown, outward and backward extensions 18 and 19 are provided for the jaws 9 and 10 and attachment is made to these extensions by means of the tubular rivets 20 and 21, engaging the member 11 in holes 22 and 23, partly shown in Figure 6.
Perforations 2a and 25 in the end portions of the memberll give increased flexibility to these portions and provide in effect a flexible attachment of the member 11 to the jaws 9 and 10.
The shield 16 is attached also 21, and forms a convenient handle to be used in attaching theclamp. The shield 16 is preferably made of'fibre or other material having a relatively low conductivity for heat for reasons which will be hereinafter set;

Also, with a comparatively large body such as 27 of Figure at the perforated end portions of the member 11 partially wrap themselves about the jaws 9 and 10 "and arethus protected against overflexture.
It will be clear also that since both the central and end portions are utilized forfiexure, the wide range of extension will not necessitate a wide variation in gripping pressure. j
The flexible connection provided between the jaws 9 and 10 permits these jaws to be moved rotatively with respect to each other independently of their translational movement of separation. The opposite flexure of the end and mid portions respectively of the member 11 results in an effective balance of forces over a considerable range. jaws'9 and 10 thus may be adjusted rotatively about such a body as 27 of Figure 4, or 28 of Figure 1, to rovi'de a greater or' less separation of the e ges 14 and 15, without affecting the stability of the clamp.
