REVOLVING 1 snare.
Application filed February 23, 1926. Serial No. 89,907. I
The invention relates to grates of the basket type particularly to such as are adapted for use in fire places, andhas as an ob ject the provision of a grate which may be revolved to sift the ashes from the fire.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a revolving grate having a variety of types of grate bar.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation,
Figure 2 is a plan View, and
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 33 of Figure 1.
As shown, the device comprises end plates 10, 11, each provided with legs 12 and 13. The plates are shown as Connected at the rear by means of a back plate 14, which connects the plates and holds the same in spaced relation. I
To connect the plates adjacent their forward edge there is shown a rod 15 formed with shoulders 16 abutting against the inner surface of each of the plates, reduced portions 17 passing through apertures in the plates and being threaded to receive nuts 18.
The plate 14 is desirably secured to the end plates 10, 11 by stove bolts 19 passing through lugs 20 formed upon the end plates and passing through the back plate 14.
To provide a revolving grate, apair of end plates 21, 22 are shown journaled in the end plates 10, 11, upon lugs 23, 24 carried by the end plates and desirably formed integral therewith. A washer 25 may be placed upon each of the lugs during assembly of the device to hold the plates 21, 22 spaced from the end plates 10, 11. Mounted between the plates 21, 22 are shown grate bars 26, 27, 28, 29, 30,an'd a cover plate 31. The mentioned grate bars and cover plate being fiat will.
when assembled, comprise a hexagonal container, and it will be understood that a greater or less number of grate bars may be provided as desired.
The bars 26 to 30 inclusive are show'n'as rigidly secured to the end plates 21, 22, and may be fastened thereto as by means of stove bolts 32, passed through perforations in the grate bars and through lugs carried'by'the inner surfaces of the end plates 21, 22.
To permit access to the interior of the grate for introduction of fuel, thenover plate sary to brin 31 is shown as hinged, as by means of lugs V 33, 34 cast upon the cover plate, projecting beyond the ends thereof, and entering socketsappropriately formed in the end plates 21,22. f
To secure the cover plate in closed position a latch 35, 36 is shown pivoted upon each end of the cover plate 31, and adapted to be swung into engagement with perforations in the end plates 21, 22. A handle 37 is shown carried by the cover plate to facilitate the opening thereof.
As shown, grate'bar 26 is in the form of a plate having circular perforations there-.
through, while bars 27 to 30 inclusive are in the usual form of grate bar. Otherforms of bar mightbe combined with those shown without departing from the vention. I
To hold the revolving grate in a desired position of rotation, a latch 37 is shown pivoted to one of the end plates,as '11, and having an angularly extending terminal portion 38 adapted to engage a chosen groove 39 in the rim of the end plate 22. A like latch may be provided'upon the end plate 10 if desired. 7
'The device is adaptable to the burning of woodand of various kind of coal,.and the openings in the grate bars may be provided in accordance with the expected service, and
spirit .of the inupon change of fuel an appropriate bar may 7 be turned downwardly for use.
' To introduce fuel into the basket the cover 31 may be turned to the position shown, or
to the upper horizontal position,i and then opened for the introduction of the fuel. In
the act of turning the basket, if itis necesg the. cover into the desired position, the ashes will be automatically sifted out of the fire.
Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiment of the invention without departingfrom its spirit.
I claim: e
1. A basket grate comprising endsupports and connecting members, ]OL11111lS in said supports, a. hollow polygonal rate having end members provided wit1 trunnions adapted to be mounted in said journals, certain of the sides of said grate being provided with relatively large openings, at least one side being provided with relatively small openings, and one of said sides being an imperforate cover.
2. A basket grate comprising end supports and connecting side members, journals in being an imperforate cover, spaced circumsaid end supports, a hollow polygonal grate ferential notches being provided in said end having circular end plates provided with plates, and hinged locking means mounted 10 trunnions adapted to be mounted in said on said end supports adapted to engage said journals, certain of the sides of said 'rate notches.
having large openings, and certain of the sides having small openings, one of said sides ERNEST R= MOORE.
