Patented June 7, 1927.
UNITED STA MARY JANE WEST, OF NELSON,- ENGLAND.
MANUFACTURE OF CAPS.
Application filed. May 10, 1926, Serial No. 108,085, and in Great Britain May 11, 1925.
This invention relates to the manufacture of peaked caps and has for its chief object to prevent the peaks from becoming cracked or broken. These peaks are usually con structed from cardboard or other light material, which is of a comparatively soft and pliable nature and in practiceit is found that they frequently become cracked or broken long before the cap is soiled or worn out.
The present invention has for its chief object to introduce a simple and inexpensive device whereby the peak, whilst retaining its soft or pliable nature will be prevented from becoming cracked or broken during use.
According to this invention the peak is reinforced across the centre by means of a sheet. metal plate formed at intervals with points or teeth adapted to be passed through holes in the peak and clenched.
In order that the said invention may beclearly understood and readily carried'into effect, the same is more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I Fig. 1 is a detached View of the plate;
Fig. 2 shows a plate fixed in position on a peak;
Fig. 3 shows the underside of the peak and the clenched points or teeth of the plate.
A indicates the peak, and B the plate.
In the example shown theplate is formed with four pointed arms two long ones b and two short ones I), the points of the arms being passed through holes in the peak and clenched. The strip is made very thin so that-it will not materially increase the thickness or weight of the peak and it may also carry one part C of the press button or stud with which such'caps are usually provided.
TES PATENT orrics. i
If desired the sheet metal strip may be made in the form of a crescent to follow the shape of the peak but made smaller than the latter and be provided at intervals with points adapted to be passed through the peak and clenched.
It may be constructed from spring metal such for example as tempered sheet steel, the points being left soft so that they'can be turned overand clenched.
It has been previously proposed to Q strengthen cap peaks in several ways, in one instance by means of a metal orother protector extending along the front edge of the peak, in another instance by two cross strips of steel or other material attached to one of the face s; by the attachment to one face of the peak of a strip or crescent of tempered steelor other material extending along, the length of the peak, and to detachably connect a stiffenerto the plate by hooks or tongues.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new,
ters Patent is 2- r A stiffener f0 and desire to secure by Letr the peak of a cap, comprising a piece of sheet metal having a central portion and four tapering and pointed arms which pro ect radially from the central portion, two of the than the other mg arranged in short arms also each other and and the pointed adapted to be b openings in the to the peak.
In witness w arms beingof greater length two, the two long arms beline with each other, the two being arranged in line with crosswise of the long arms,
ends of all of the arms being cut over and passed through peak of the capand clenched.
hereof I affix my signature.
