TUB FOR WASHING MACHINES.
Application filed IanuaryM. 1324: Serial Noi seesaw.
The principal objects ofthe invention are to provide a tub which will eliminate splashing and the slopping of water about when wringing or removing the clothes therefrom, and to devise a tub of sheet metal construction which will be easily kept clean, is of extremely light weight and very strong and durable.
The principal features of the invention consist in forming a concaved or dished top to direct the wash water from splashing against the cover in the washing operation and to lead the water into the tub when removing the clothes or wringing, and further in flanging the edges of the ends inwardly in a curved flange and connecting same to the body in a double or look seam.
A still further feature consists in arranging an axial support in the form of dished discs secured to the radially ribbed ends and provided with keystone shaped slots opening from the underside to receive tapered trunnions.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of'our improved tub.
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevational and half vertical sectional View.
Figure 3 is an enlarged end elevational and half vertical section.
Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective detail of one 01": the end supports.
The body 1 of the tub is substantially cylindrical having an opening 2 in the top extending from end to end. Within the opening 2 is arranged a top sheet 3 which is secured to the body 1 with a double or look seam 4 which gives great rigidity to the structure. The top is formed with a central circular opening 5 into which a suitable cover is inserted.
The dished shape of the top drains any water falling on the top into the tub and thus prevents the slopping of wateroutside the tub when the clothes are being removed. A flange 6 is secured on the inner side of the top around the opening 5.
An opening 7 is formed in the bottom of the body 1 and extends from end to end and secured to the longitudinal edges of this opening by a lock seam 8 is a ridge piece 9 which isof an inverted V shape formed with a rounded top 10 and filleted bottom portions 11 merging into the curve of the bottom of the body. The member 9 is drawn from sheet metal and the ends 12 slope downwardlyand outwardly to: the line'oit the cylindrieal body and form a (3011+ tinuationof the end edges thereot.
f The ends 13' of the body 21l G"0fSl1bS1'Jtt11- tially circular form and are pressed with the rounded flanged edges 14 which are joined to the end edges of the body and bottom ridge piece 9 in a lock seam 15. By thus shaping the ends with therounded flanges the interior of the tub is completed without any sharp corners where dirt may lodge. Consequently the tub may be kept quite clean.
The ends 13 are strengthened by stamping therein a plurality of radial ribs 16 which gdd stiliness and rigidity to the whole strucure.
Secured to the outer sides of the ends and centrally thereof are the dished discs 17 of heavy sheet metal. These discs are formed with flattened faces 18 and slots 19 are cut through the sloping portion and flattened ends opening from the bottom and having upwardly converging side edges 20 forming keystone shaped slots.
Into the slots 19 are fitted cast metal blocks 21 of keystone shape having the converging sides 22 .shaped with a bevel thus forming a dove-tail structure which when inserted into the slots 19 of the discs 17 draws tightly into place, the inner faces of the blocks seating against the ends 13 of the tub.
The blocks 21 are provided with gudgeon pins 23 which form the trunnions upon which the tub is pivotally supported in suitable bearings. The gudgeons are of course held in suitable hearings in a supporting frame, which is not shown and by reason of the taper structure of the blocks and the slots 19 of the end plates the tub may be easily removed and may be as easily replaced and when in engagement the tub is very securely supported.
In use the tub is oscillated by suitable means and the water and clothes are washed back and forth. The water washes up the rounded body 1 and striking the inturned dished top 3 is directed downwardly and away from the cover and with the addition of the flange 6 the water is prevented from splashing out through the contact of the cover j oint, even though said joint may not be tight.
In the return swing of the tub the water and clothes strike the bridge piece 9 and a rubbing and cleansing action occurs, the
water being forced through the fabrics. The rounded top of this bridge piece with the filleted corners presents smooth rounded surfaces to the clothes in action so that they will not be torn or injured.
A tub constructed of sheet metal as'described is extremely light and is therefore operated with the minimum effort, the dishing and ribbing of the ends and the secur ing of the ends by double seams renders the structure extremely rigid and strong and a very serviceable and also good appearing article is produced.
What We claim as Olll.ll1V811lliOl1 is 1. A tub for a washing machine having a rectangular opening in the top extending from end to end, a top piece secured to the edges of said opening by a ribbed seam and havin a central cover opening and being dishe inwardly to said cover opening, a cover closing said opening and formed with a downwardly extending flange adapted to engage the edge of said opening, and a support the tub and channels formed in said tapered edges to receive the edge portion of said tapered slots. to lock the tub against axial movement.
