Description

l. GONYK SCYTHE Filed Aug. 20, 1924 Patented May 10, 1927.
UNITED STATES IGNATZ GONYK, OF LJUBLJANA, YUGOSLAVIA.
SCYTHE.
Application filed August 20, 1924, Serial No. 733,205, and in Austria August 21, 1923.
In scythes, and the like hitherto known the premature wear oi? the blade due to repeated sharpening has been avoided by arranging on the blunt main scythe-blade by means of special covering rails an interchangeable steel blade, said rail being rigidly connected with the latter blade.
The invention consists in the -tact that the covering rail and the interchangeable blade are not rigidly connected as heretofore; these two parts are, hmwver made separately and are connected by a clamping action of the rail which is slid over the interchangeable blade, said rail being provided with holes which correspond to the rivet heads on the main scythe blade longitudinal slots being also provided in the rail and each o'l" said slots is arranged to communicate with its adjacent hole while the valls ihereoii' are inclined toward said hole. The improvement 011: the arrangement over the known devices consists in an increased. fastening etl'cct owing to the pressure which exerted by the covering rail on the two blades and which is due to the inclining ot' the walls of the slots. Hitherto no such pressure had been applied in the known devices.
The invention is illustrated by way oi example in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side view oil, the scythe comprising a dull. main blade and a sharp steel blade fastened thereon by means of a covering rail; Fig. 2 shows theiliflerent parts on an enlarged scale and Fig. ti a. longitudinal section on line A-B of Fig. l. on an enlarged scale; longitudinal sectional detail showing the improved clamping means, and Fig. dis a frag mental-y top plan detail of a part of the rail.
As in. some of the known devices the main scythe blade a only serves as support for the working blade and is therefore quite blunt; it is provided with rivets b which enga e by means of transverse slots (1 with the s harpened strip a of steel plate which Fig. l is an enlarged is about 0.25 mm. thick. This strip 0 acts as the cutting blade. A. fastening rail 6 is passed over the heads oi? the rivets I) having holes f corresponding to said rivets. The rail is also provided. with a plurality of iongitudinal slots 9 each of which has one end communicating with the adjacentopening while the walls oi? the slots are beveled as at g and inclined toward said opening and enable the rail to e.\'ert a pressure on the blade 0 increasing when the rail is shifted thus fastening the interchangeable blade on the main blade e by friction. In order to improve the fastening action the scythe blade a is moreover provided with a rib h whichv prevents the blade 0 from projecting for a non-uniform amount beyond the blade a, the former'being brought into abutment with the rib h when being mounted and a projection '5, the latter on the outer edge of the blade a, by which the point a. of the blade e is brought into alignment with the edge 01 the blade 0. The blade a, rivets 7) and cover ing or fastening rail 0 or only the two latter members may be made of aluminium or the like to reduce the Weight.
What I claim is:
A device of the character described including a main blade, :1 series oi headed.
fasteners carried thereby, a sharpened strip engageable with the fasteners, a covering rail. provided with a series of holes for receiving the corresponding headed fasteners and with a series of longitudinal slots, each oi said slots having one end communicating with the adjacent hole the walls of the slots being beveled and. inclined towards said hole, whereby when said rail is shifted the headed fasteners ride upon the inclined walls of the slots and exert a wedging and clam )ing action on. the strip, substantially as am for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
IGNATZ GONYK.
