This invention relates to improvements in mechanical toys ofthat type in which material, such as dry sand, is passed through a series of Operations. The object of the im provement is to afford a power driven mechanical toy for the handling and treatment of dry sand as a means of instructive amusement.
This object is accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a construction embodying the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a plan projected from Fig. 1.
The characters of reference appearing in the description refer to parts shown in the drawings and designated thereon by corre sponding characters. r
The invention comprises a vehicle constituted of a platform 1 supported upon a pair of axles 2 and 3 each of which is provided at each of its ends with a wheel 4, upon which wheels the vehicle is movable. At one end of the platform is provided a pair of vertically disposed standards 5 that support near their upper ends a transversely disposed drive shaft 7,'which shaft has on each end a sheave wheel 8, and alsoa second sheave wheel 9 adjacent one of the former sheave wheels. In" the upper ends of said standards is mounted a transversely disposed counter shaft 10 having fixed thereon a sprocket wheel 11 and drive gear 12, which drive gear has actuated relation with the drive shaft 7 through intermediate gearing 13. A hand-operated crank shaft 14, provided with a gear 15 that meshes with said intermediate gearing 13, is arranged so that the counter shaft 10 may be actuated manually by turning the crank 16.

The end of the platform, opposite the standards 5, has projecting beams 18 in which is mounted a transverse shaft 19 having thereon a sprocket wheel 20, and upon the sprocket wheels 11 and 20 is mounted a conveying member consisting of an endless chain 21 having thereon a series of conveyer buckets 22 spaced apart, which conveyer member is actuated as the counter shaft 10 is rotated. ards 5 and extends between the upper and lower lengths of the endless chain. The chute serves as a brace for the standards and also receives droppings from the buckets of the conveyor member, which droppings are directed by the chute to the ground beneath the conveyer.
A hopper 2lis positioned on the standards 5 at a point beneath the countershaft 10 so as to receive materials discharged from the upper end of the conveyor member, and contiguous with the lower end of the hopper, and mounted upon the standards 5 is a bin 25 that extends outwardly from the standards and has in its lower end an out let spout 26 which is controlled by a valve 27 arranged therein. In the top of the bin 25, and extending beneath the hopper 2 1, is
arranged a vibratable screen having fixed thereon an upwardly extending frame 29 in which is mounted a transverse shaft '30. Above each end of the shaft 30 is mounted a sheave pulley 31-to be actuated by a belt 32 that is trained on the corresponding sheave pulley 8 on the drive shaft 7. The shaft 30 has mounted thereon a iiy wheel 83 having a counter weight '34: fixed eccentric-ally thereon so that the fly wheel rotates out of balance when the shaft 30 is actuated, and thus causing the screen to vibrate.
At the outer end of the bin 25 is positioned a horizontal rock-shaft 35 which has fixed thereon a catch box 36 for the reception of oversize materials that pass over the screen from the hopper. The catch box tips when the rockshaft is actuated, so that its contents are thereby discharged. Upon one end of the rock-shaft is fixed an arm 37 which has connection with a hand operated Windlass 38 by means of a cable 39, the Windlass being mounted in the standard 2-35. A spring controlled ratchet mechanism 4rd has locking engagement with the Windlass by which the Windlass is prevented from retracting, and thereby the catch boxis sustained in receiving position.
