To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR E. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pontiac, in the county of Livingston and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Portable Wagon-Dump and Elevator, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in portable wagon-dumps and elevators.
One object of the present invention is to improve the construction of portable wagondumps and elevators and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one designed for handling grain, coal, and various other materials in bulk and adapted to tilt a wagon for discharging the contents of its box or body and capable of elevating the grain or other material thus discharged into a suit able bin, crib, or other receptacle.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this kind which will be portable and which may be compactly arranged when it is to be transported from one place to another.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a plan view of a wagon-dump and elevator constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the rear wheels and the front truck being removed and the parts being arranged for use. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, the parts being arranged for transportation. Fig. 5 is a detail view illus-, trating the construction of the combined shifting device and brake for controlling the descent of the Wagon after its contents have been discharged. l designates a main platform composed of suitable transverse sills connected at intervals and provided with a flooring 2, having an inclined portion 3, adapted when the front truck 4 and the rear wheels 5 are removed to enable a wagon to be readilydriven on the platform. The platform is provided at its front with a forwardly-extending approximately triangular extension 6, composed of side beams and connected at its apex with the front truck 4:, and the latter, which is provided with a suitable tongue or pole 5 is detachably pivoted to the extension 6 and is adapted to be readily taken off to permit the platform to be arranged upon the ground for operation. One of the beams or sills of the platform is extended and provided with suitable spindles 7 to receive the rear wheels 5, which are also removable. On the approximately triangular extension 6 of the platform or main frame is mounted a suitable horsepower 8, having a sweep 9, and its tumbling rod 10 is connected with a horizontal longitudinal shaft 11, extending beneath the platform to the rear of the same for communicating motion to the endless carriers of an elevator 12 and a conveyer 13. The tumblingrod 10 is connected with the horizontal shaft, which is arranged in a plane slightly above the tumbling-rod, bya shaft-section 14, having knuckle-joints at its ends to provide a flexible shaft. 7
The horse-power 8 is provided at its top with a triangular frame or plate 15, forming a rigid support for a windlass 16, having its cable 17 or other flexible connection arranged on a pulley 18 of a hinged mast or support 19 and extending therefrom to a pulley 20 of the elevator and back again to the mast or support 19, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. The mast or support is braced at the front side by a guy rope or cable 21, extending from the top of the mast or support 19 to the plate or frame 15 of the horse-power. By this construction the elevator, which is hinged, may be raised and lowered and secured at any desired adjustment, and the mast or support is firmly braced by the guy rope or cable and the strain is equalized. The Windlass may be of any desired construction; but it is preferably provided with a crank 22, having a worm 23, meshing with a gear-wheel 21 of the shaft or drum, around which the cable 17 is wound. The mast or support, which is arranged at a slight inclination, is hinged at its lower end at 25 to the upper side of the platform, near the back thereof, and it is supported by an inclined brace 26, secured at its upper end to the upper portion of the mast or support and hinged at its lower end 27 to the platform. By this construction the mast or support is adapted to be arranged in an upright position, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, to receive the cable, and it is also capable of being folded upon the main platform or frame, as illustrated in Fig. at, to arrange the parts for transporting the apparatus to the crib, bin, or other receptacle to be filled with grain or other material. Vhen the mast or support is in an upright position, it is retained against movement in either direction by the guy rope or cable 21 and by the weight of the elevator, which is arranged at an inclination.
The elevator12, which may be constructed in any suitable manner, is preferably composed of upper and lower sections 28 and 29, which may be made either long or short; but an elevator of any number of sections may be employed, if desired. However, two sections are preferable, as the hoisting mechanism, comprising the cable and the Windlass, will enable an elevator of two sections to be handled and folded with great facility. The elevator also consists of a suitable frame and an endless carrier 30, which may be of any desired construction, but which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as consisting of a belt provided with transverse slats or pieces. The lower shaft 31 of the elevator is arranged in bearings 32 of the main frame, and the frame of the elevator is designed to be provided with suitable plates or castings having laterally -projecting sleeves 31 for surrounding the shaft 31, and these sleeves are designed to extend into the bearings 32 of the main frame or platform to sustain the weight of the elevator and to relieve the shaft of strain. When the elevator is detached from the main frame or platform, the shaft 31, which remains on the elevator and which is carried by the same, is taken out of the bearings The frame of the elevator is pivoted at the shaft 31, and it is adapted to be swung upward and downward to arrange its discharge end at the desired elevation. \Vhen it is desired to transport the apparatus from one crib, bin, or receptacle to another, the elevator is folded, removed, and loaded upon the platform. Instead of detaching the elevator from the frame or platform it may be simply folded and left in position when the distance which the apparatus is to be moved is short. The conveyeris also detachable ,as hereinafter explained, and both the elevator and the conveyer are designed to be loaded upon the platform or main frame when the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 1; but the said elevator and conveyer are omitted from Fig. 4 to enable the other parts to be illustrated more clearly in said figure. The lower shaft 31, which carries sprocketwheels 33 for the chains of the belt of the endless carrier, is also provided with a sprocketwheel 31, located at the inner end of the shaft 31 and connected by a sprocket-chain 35 with a sprocket-wheel 36 of an upper counter-shaft 37, from which motion is communicated by the means hereinafter explained to the said conveyer 13. The inner end of the shaft 31 is extended beyond the inner bearing 32, and it is also provided with a bevel gear 38, meshing with a bevel-gear 39 on the rear end of the longitudinal shaft 11, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. The bevel-gear 38 may be cast integral with the sprocket-wheel 34 or two separate pinions or wheels may be provided.
The upper counter-shaft 37 is mounted in upwardly-extending bearings 10 of a bracket 11, which is secured to a suitable arm or piece 12, connecting the mast 19 and the brace 26, and the said bracket is also provided with a vertical bearing 43, receiving a short vertical shaft 43, which forms the pivot or pintle for the swinging conveyer13. The upper end of the short vertical pivot-shaft is connected by bevel-gears 41 and 45 with the inner end of the upper horizontal counter-shaft, and its lower end is connected by bevel-gears 413 and 17 with a short transverse shaft 18 of a yoke 49, which is mounted on the short vertical pivot-shaft, at the lower end thereof, and which is adapted to oscillate to swing the conveyer. The yoke at), which is approximately inverted-U-shaped, is provided at the lower ends of its sides with lateral extensions 50, having bearing-openings for the shaft 13 and arranged to receive a pair of hooks 51,whereby the inner end of the conveyer is supported from the yoke. One end of the transverse shaft 48 is extended and has a sprocket-wheel 52 keyed or otherwise fixed to it, and the said sprocket wheel is connected by a short sprocket-chain 53 with a sprocket-wheel 54 of the shaft 55 at the inner end of the endless carrier 56 of the conveyer 13. The conveyer 13 is provided with a suitable frame, and the hooks which support the inner end of the conveyer are suitably secured to the sides of the frame of the conveyer, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings. By supporting the conveyer as illustrated in Fig. 7 it is adapted to oscillate horizontally to swing it in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1 to arrange it out of the way while a wagon is beingdriven on the platform or main frame and to arrange it at the back of the wagon as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, to position it for receiving the contents of the body or box of the said wagon. The endless carrier of the swinging conveyer may be of any desired construction, and it is illustrated in the drawings as consisting of a beltprovided with transverse slats or pieces. The swinging conveyor is supported by a brace 57, and it is provided at one side with a spout 58, and the said brace forms a yielding support for the conveyor and is provided with a coiled cushioning-spring 59, located between the ends of the brace, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The brace 57 is preferably in the form of a rod, and, if desired, the elevator may be supported by a lateral brace, as illustrated in Fig. 3; but this latter brace may be omitted, especially when short elevators are used. The spout 58, which is approximately rectangular in plan view, is provided with an inclined bottom, and it extends laterally from the inner side of the conveyer and is adapted to receive and direct the contents of a wagon body or box onto the endless carrier of the conveyer 13.
The longitudinal shaft is provided with a worm 60, meshing with a gear-Wheel 61 of a' horizontal transverse shaft 62, located at the front side of the platform and connected by bevel-gearing with a shaft 63. The gearwheel 61 is arranged at one end of the shaft 62, and the bevel-pinion 64 is arranged at its other end and meshes with a bevel gear-wheel 65 of the shaft 63. The shaft 63 is a windlass-shaft, and it extends across the platform at a point beneath the same and is provided at opposite sides thereof with drums 66, having cables 67 or other flexible connections wound around them. The flexible connec tions or cables 67 have each one end wound around one of the drums of the Windlass-shaft, and they pass over pulleys 68 of substantially A-shaped frames or standards, which form guides for slides 69. The A-shaped frames or standards, which are located at on posite sides of the platform, are mounted upon a folding frame 70, provided at'opposite sides with arms 71, which are pivoted to the main frame or platform, at opposite sides thereof, and which permit the folding frame to be arranged, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings, to lessen the width of the apparatus and enable the same to be readily hauled through a gateway or other restricted passage. The guides 72 of the frames or standards 73 are inclined, and the slides, which are secured to the adjacent .ends of the cables or ropes, are connected by rods 74 and 75 with a verticallymovable dumping-platform 76, arranged to receive the front wheels of a wagon, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and adapted to be elevated to tilt the wagon body or box for causing the contents of the same to be discharged into the spout of the conveyer. The vertically-movable section or platform 76 is provided at opposite sides with stops 78, adapted to retain the wheels on it. The
folding frame, which supports the verticallymovable section or platform when the latter is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, may be constructed and braced in any suitable manner, and it will be apparent that when the Windlass-shaft 63 is rotated in the proper direction for winding up the cable 67 on its drums 66 the slides and the platform or section 76 will be elevated, and as the guides 72 are inclined the platform will be moved inward slightly and will be practically raised and lowered in an arc of a circle, and. by this arrangement the vehicle will have no material longitudinal movement. The windlass-shaft 63 also carries a ratchet-wheel 79, which may be formed integral with the bevelgear 65 or constructed separate therefrom, and the ratchet-Wheel is engaged by a dog or detent 80, arranged as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the accompanying drawings and connected by a rod 81 with a foot-operated lever 82. The pawl or dog 80, which may be constructed in any suitable manner, is preferably retained in engagement with the ratchet- Wheel by a spring 83, which bears against the lever 82, and the latter, which is L-shaped, is pivoted at one end. The -L-shaped lever has one of its arms or sides vertical, and its other arm or portion is disposed horizontally and is arranged to be engaged by the foot of the operator to disengage the pawl or dog from the ratchet-Wheel to permit the windlass-shaft to rotate for unwinding the cables or flexible connections 67.
In order to control the rotation of the windlass-shaft and the descent of the wagon-body after the contents thereof have been discharged in the conveyer, a combined brake and shifting device is provided. The shaft 62 is provided with a knuckle-joint 84, located near one of its ends, and the body portion of the shaft 62 is adapted to be swung up ward and downward from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 5 to the position illustrated in dotted lines to arrange the gearwheel 61 in mesh with the worm 60 and to throw it out of mesh. A sliding block 85 is mounted on the shaft 62 adjacent to the gearwheel 61 and is connected with a crank 86 of a crank-shaft 87, journaled in asuitable bearing 89 and provided with a lever 90, which is adapted to be oscillated from the position illustrated in full lines in Fig. 5 to the position shown in dotted lines. \Vhen the shaft is in the position illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 5 of the accompanying drawings, the sliding block 85, which is provided with openings for the shafts 62 and 87, is arranged adjacent to the inner side face of the gearwheel 61 and is provided adjacent to the same with a fiat engaging face, and it is adapted to be carried into engagement with the gearwheel 61 by forcing the handle or lever 90 toward the ratchet-wheel. By this construction and arrangement the shifting device is also adapted to operate as a brake, and it will control the descent of the wagon and enable the same to be slowly lowered to a horizontal position.
\Vhen a wagon is to be driven on the main frame, the conveyer, which extends transversely of the wagon, is swung out of the path of the same, so that the wagon may be readily brought to a proper position on the platform 2. The conveyer is then returned to its normal position and the wagon is elevated by means of the Windlass-shaft 63 and the gearing for connecting the same with the longitudinal shaft. After the wagon has been elevated to the inclined position illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings the gear-wheel 61 is thrown out of mesh with the worm and the contents of the wagon body or box are permitted to flow into the spout of the conveyer, which carries the material to the elevator, and the latter elevates and conveys the said material to the bin, crib, or other receptacle for the same. After the contents of the wagon-body has been discharged the pawl or dog is thrown out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel to permit the wagon to descend to a horizontal position, the de scent of the wagon-body being controlled by the combined brake and shifter. The wagon is then driven off the platform and the operation of dumpingand elevating the material is repeated. lVhen it is desired to transport the apparatus from one place to another, the rear wheels are replaced on the rear axle and the front truck is connected with the extension of the main frame or platform. The elevator and the conveyer are loaded on the frame or platform after having been previously detached and the elevator folded. The mast or post 1 9 is also adapted to fold down upon the main frame or platform, and the folding frame is adapted to be swung upward over the same. The apparatus may then be readily hauled from one point to another. In lowering the vehicle from an inclined to a horizontal position the combined block and brake-shoe is adapted to engage the gearwheel 61 to form a positive brake mechanism, and it will dispense with a band or other form of brake usually employed.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a main frame having a platform, an elevator arranged at one side of the platform, a horizontally-swinging conveyer pivoted at one end and extending across the platform and adapted to receive the 0011- tents of a wagon, said conveyer being adapted to be swung around to permit a wagon to be driven on the platform, and gearing connecting the elevator and the conveyer and permit-ting the swing of the latter, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a main frame having a platform, an elevator, at horizontally-swinging conveyer pivoted at one end and extending across the platform and provided at one side with a spout adapted to receive the contents of a wagon-body, said conveyer being adapted to be swung around out of the way when a wagon is driven on the platform, and gearing for operating the elevator and the conveyer and for discharging the contents of the wagon body or bed into the spout, substantially as described.
In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a main frame, an elevator, at conveyer arranged to receive the contents of a wagon body or box, a dumping-platform, a longitudinal shaft, a suitable horse-power arranged on the frame and connected with the longitudinal shaft, and gearing extending from the longitudinal shaft and operating the dumping-platform, and connecting the elevator and the conveyer and permitting the swing of the latter, substantially as described.
at. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a main frame, a hinged elevator, a folding mast or support hinged to the frame, a conveyer supported from the said mast or support and located adjacent to the elevator, and a windlass having a cable or flexible connection extending to the mast or support and to the elevator, substantially as described.
5. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a main frame, a folding mast or support rising therefrom, an elevator hinged to the frame at one side of the mast or support, a Windlass arranged at the opposite side of the mast or support and having a cable or rope extending over the same and connected with the elevator, and means for operating the latter, substantially as described.
6. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a frame, an elevator, a pivot-shaft, a yoke provided with bearings, and supported from the pivot-shaft, a transverse shaft journaled in the bearings of the yoke, gearing connecting the said shafts, a horizontallyswinging conveyer supported from the yoke and provided with an endless carrier connected with and operated by the transverse shaft, and means for driving the pivot-shaft, substantially as described.
7. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of aframe, an elevator, a vertical pivot-shaft, a yoke supported by the pivot-shaft and having lateral extensions and provided with bearings, a horizontally-swinging conveyer provided with supporting devices engaging the lateral extensions,said eonveyer being provided with an endless carrier, gearing for connecting the endless carrier with the pivot-shaft, and means for driving the latter, substantially as described.
8. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a frame, an elevator, a bracket, a vertical pivot-shaft journaled on the bracket, the horizontal shaft 37 also supported by the bracket and connected by gearing with the upper end of the pivot-shaft, gearing connecting the shaft 37 with the elevator, a yoke supported by the pivot-shaft, a transverse shaft journaled in the yoke and connected by gearing With the lower end of the pivot-shaft, a conveyor supported by the yoke and having an endless carrier, and gearing for connecting the endless carrier with the transverse shaft, substantially as described.
9. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a,main frame, a folding frame having arms connected With the main frame, a dumping platform or section carried by the folding frame, and means for operating the dumping platform orsection, substantially as described.
10. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a main frame, a folding frame provided with guides, slides mounted on the guides, a platform or section connected with the guides and adapted to be raised and lowered, and means for elevating the slides, substantially as described.
11. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a main frame, a dumping platform or section, a Windlass-shaft connected with the dumping platform or section, a
brake-shoe mounted on the shaft 62, means for moving the shaft 62 and for simultaneously actuating the combined block and shoe, and ratchet mechanism connected With the Windlass-shaft, substantially as described.
