Speecation of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 7, 1904. Serial No. 223,593.
.To all whom, it may concern: y
Beit known that I, Jol-IN R. KooNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington Mills, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Outside Dry- Earth Olosets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in what may be termed outdoor dry-earth closets or privies.
Said invention has for its object to provide for supplying coal-ashes, earth, or other suitable material to the excrement contained in the box or chamber of the closet or privy as an absorbent for such eXerement, rendering the latter odorless and otherwise desirable from a sanitary view-point.
Said invention consists o1 the combination and arrangement oi parts substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed, and particularly defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the'preferred embodiment of my invention, Figurel is a view showing said invention as applied to an ordinary privy or earthcloset, partly in sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a section produced through the sifter and its chamber portion of the device at right angles to the plane of Fig. 1.- Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts contained in Fig. 2 with the top part oi the casing removed. Fig. 4 is a broken-away detailed View disclosing more especially the lower interior portion of the sifter-chamber with its structural features.
'Fig 5 is a view showing particularly the sifter moved outward and its pivoted bottom tilted, as in dumping its coarse particles after the sifting operation. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section produced through the excrement box or chamber, disclosing more especially the seat-opening-covering slide with its actuating means. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detached fragmentary view showing more fully the actuating means for said slide for covering the seat-opening.
In the carrying out of my invention I arrange conveniently to and preferably laterally of the ordinary dry closet or privy 1 a sifter chamber or inclosure 2, within which, as indicated, is arranged in its upper portion a sifter or screen 3, preferably rectangular in general outline. Said sifter or screen is supported movably upon a roll or cylindric bar 3a, secured or arranged in the casing or in.-
' closure 2 at its rear side, and which sifter has secured to an upward-extended rear portion thereof a rod or handle 3b, extending forward out through said. casing conveniently for grasping and actuation, as in operating the sifter. Said. sifter of course being of sulliciently less diameter in one direction than the interior cross-section of the easing 2 to permit it to have the requisite reciprocation, as in operating said sifter, may have its lateral portions extended, as at 3, or otherwise be adapted to be upheld. while thus being actuated or operated, as will be readily appreciated. The bottom 3 of the sifter 3 is hinged or pivoted, as at 3M, laterally to the sifter-frame, to provide, for the ready tilting of said bottom when said sifter is .moved outward, as shown, as in Fig. 5, and to permit the dumping of the remaining coarse material after each sifting operation, as will be readily understood. Said sifter-bottom has extending from its free end bar extensions 3G, serving therefor the like purposes as the extensions 30 do -for the sifter, the latter underlying the former when the sifter, with its bottom, is in operative position.
Within the casing or inclosure 2, directly above the sifter or'screen 3, is secured or fixed a board or platform 4, one edge of which, however, is removed distantly from the opposite Wall or side of said inclosure or casing, thus leaving an opening at that point to provide for dividing up the ashes or other material which may be dumped into said easing from above, part falling upon said board and part falling into said sifter. After the eX- hausting of the contents of the sifter by suitably operating the latter that portion of the ashes or other material which may have lodged upon the platform or board 4 may be removed therefrom by a scraper 4a, resting edgewise upon the board 4 and actuated by a suitable handle 4b, extending through the casing 2, and said material caused to fall into the sifter for treatment, as the previous contents o'f said sifter. In the lower part or bottom of the casing or inclosure 2 is arranged or provided to receive the sifted ashes or other material a trough 5, flanked upon opposite sides b y downward and inward sloping boards or deflectors 5, with their lower edges resting upon the upper edges of said trough to direct or conduct whatever ashes may fall thereon into said trough. Arranged within said trough is a conveyer 6, having spiral blades or wings GL -to provide as said conveyer is actuated for the endwise feeding or ICO IIO
delivery of the contents of said trough out through an opening 6b in the casing 2 into an elevator presently described. Said conveyer has its shaft suitably journaled in opposite sides of the casing 2, with one end extending beyond said casing and through the lower end of the inclined trunk or housing 8a ot an elevator 8, comprising an endless belt of buckets or carriers Sb. Said projecting or extending end ot said conveyer-shaft has secured thereto within said end of said elevatortrunk a sprocket Wheel or pulley 8C, encompassed by said belt or buckets 8b, whereby it is obvious as the last-noted is operated, as presently explained, said conveyer-shaft Will be simultaneously actuated, and thus provide for the delivery of the contents ot the trough 6 into the buckets of the elevator for the elevation thereof up through said trunk for a purpose later described. Said elevator trunk or housing 8a has also arranged in its upper end a sprocket wheel or pulley 8d, secured upon a shaft Se bearing therein, and which pulley or wheelis also encompassed by the endless belt or buckets 8b, and which shaft has its forward end adapted to be readily actuated by hand tor operating said endless belt ot bucketsconstituting the elevator. With their upper meeting ends communicating with the corresponding end of the tank 8 are two divergent chutes or spouts 9, whose lower ends deliver into the excrement-boxlO. rlhe spouts or chutes 9 have arranged or hung therein at their point ot convergence a platevalve 9a, adapted to be suitably actuated by hand to direct the flow of the elevated ashes or other material from the elevator into either chute or spout 9, as may be desired, in delivering the same into the excrement chamber or box as an absorbent and deodorizer.
The privy-seat 10at has arranged upon its under side, so as to permit ot the closing of the opening therein after use, a slide 1l, having depending therefrom a stirrup or staple lla, within which plays and which is engaged by the lateral portion of a bent or crank arm l2Z1 of a rock-shaft l2, suitably supported in the front side of the privy and having secured to its outer end an arcuate foot-lever 13. Said lever, as indicated, may be conveniently operated by applying the toot thereto in effecting the movement ot the slide ll, as in opening or closing the opening in the seat for obvious purposes. The crank-arm 12a, being arranged within the privy box or chamber, has its vertical portion so inclosed or guarded by incasing it in any suitable way as to isolate or remove it from contact with the excrement as the latter accumulates in said box or chamber, Also for purposes of ventilation a pipe, preferably of sheet-iron and about three inches in cross-section, may be arranged at the rear of the closet or privy upon the outside with its lower end extending thereinto under the seat formed by the top of the excrement-box and its upper end terminating a suitable distance above the closetroof.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein, as they may be changed as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claiml. In a device of the character described, an excrement-chamber, a sitter, with its casing, provided above said sitter, with a platform, with one edge removed distantly from the opposite wall of said casing, a conveyer arranged below said sitter and adapted to receive the sitted material from said sitter, and an elevator adapted to actuate said conveyer and deliver into said excrement-chamber.
2. In a device of the character described, an excrement-chamber, a sitter having a pivoted bottom, with arm or bar extensions at one end, adapted to be supported upon the sitter-inclosure, means arranged below said sitter and adapted to convey the sitted material from said sitter, means adapted to elevate the conveyed material and deliver it into said excrement-chamber.
3. In a device ot the character described, an excrement-chamber, a sitter and an inclosing casing therefor, said casing having secured therein just above said sitter, a platform or board with one edge removed distantly trom the opposite Wall of said casing, and a scraper arranged upon said board or platform and having a handle extending through said casing, means for conveying away the sitted material and means for elevating said material and delivering it into said excrement-chamber.
4. In a device of the character described, a sitter and its inclosing casing, said sitter having bar or arm extensions at one end adapted to rest upon a cross-bar of said casing, and a handle for actuating said sitter, extending through said casing.
5. In a device of the character described, an excrement-chamber, a sitter, an inclosing casing therefor, a conveyer arranged within said casing and below said sitter, an elevator effective to actuate said conveyer and deliver the material conducted away by said conveyer to a point above said excrementchamber, and a bituroated Itrunk with its branches delivering at different points into said excrement-chamber, said trunk or chute being equipped with a plate-valve adapted to direct the elevated material, from the upper end of said trunk into either ot said branches.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name. to this specication in the presence ot two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN R. KOONS. litnesses:
