ADOLPH SUCK, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
GATE FOR COAL-POCKETS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLPH SUoK, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented anew and useful Improvement in a Gate for a Coal-Pocket, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of my invention is to provide an outlet and gate for a coal pocket which may serve the purpose both of a discharge and of a screen so that the coal as it falls from the pocket has the dust and small matter screened out of it during its discharge, means being also provided to shut off the supply of coal as occasion may require. When so arranged the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings is especially useful for hard or anthracite coal. WVhen, however, soft or bituminous coal is to be discharged, the screen can be removed and the outlet enlarged if thought best.
My invention will be understood by reference to the drawings in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of an apparatus embodying my invention and arranged for use with hard coal. Fig. 2 is a plan, a part being broken away to show the interior construction, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section corresponding to that of Fig. 1, the screen being removed, the apparatus being arranged for use with soft coal.
A is the floor of the pocket from which extends downward through an opening therein a vertical chute B. A shelf C, C extends part way across the passage in the chute and practically closes the outlet therefrom, forming a narrow mouth 0 through which the coal issues. The portion C of this shelf may be removed to enlarge the mouth 0 as is usually necessary when the device is to be used for Below the shelf C and extending from the opposite wall of the chute is a removable screen D having openings of proper size to screen out the smaller particles and dust from the coal as it moves out of the pocket. The shelf C, C and the screen D are at an angle to each other, the lower end C of the shelf approaching the upper end of the screen D so as to form a narrow outlet (1 for the coal. A discharge opening from the chute is provided on the side B thereof and above the lower edge of the screen. The arrangement of the shelf and screen is such that change of direction is given to the pas sage of coal from the pocket to the discharge Specification of Letters Patent.

so that the coal acquires but little momentum in its travel and is easily controlled and screened.
E is a cut-off adapted normally to close the outlet between the lower ends C of the shelf and the screen D and control the discharge of coal. It has preferably a curved face which is attached to two arms 6 which are mounted upon a square portion of the shaft c which shaft is mounted in bearings in the side walls of the chute. The shaft runs through the walls of the chute and at one end has a handle F attached to it. By moving this handle therefore the position of the gate is changed so as to open the outlet from the chute or close it as the case may be. This gate may be constructed in other ways, but the fact that its face is curved as described enables it to move up easily out of the way to allow the weight of coal in front of it to fall out from the chute, and the face being thin, made like the other parts except the screen of sheet metal, easily finds its way back when it is desired to cut off the flow of coal from the chute.
Below the screen D the forward wall of the chute is brought outward as at B to form the support for the guiding trough B onto which the coal is directed by the screen. The chute is provided at its lower end with hinged doors B. These doors are preferably hinged across the middle of the chute and are held closed against the opposite edge of the chute by catches b of any convenient form. A chamber B is thus formed to catch the screenings from the coal. They may be discharged at any time by unlatching the doors B and allowing them to fall.
To support the upper end of the screen D I provide short angle irons d bolted to the sides of the chute. The lower edge of the screen rests against an angle iron d and the upper edge of the floor of the trough B When the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, the upper end of the screen and the cut-off prevent the escape of coal from the chute. By lifting the cut-off the coal runs out, being screened as it passes over the screen, the screenings collecting in the bin. Soft coal is not screened. WVhen therefore this chute is used for soft coal the end C of the shelf is removed by removing the bolts which hold it in place. The screen is removed and a shelf d hinged at d to the interior of the chute and normally raised and buttoned by the button (1 in its vertical position is lowered so that it rests upon the angle irons Z and with the cut-off E closes the outlet from the chute. When soft coal is to be discharged the cut-off is lifted and the doors B are opened so that the coal falls directly through the chute into the wagon or other receptacle below.
An advantage which attaches to this apparatus lies in the fact that it can be easily used for either of two purposes-for delivering soft coal or screening and delivering hard coaland in the latter case the passage of the coal is so tortuous that the discharge of coal can be started and can be cut off easily at any moment no matter how much weight of coal there is behind it. Thus the apparatus can easily be. managed by one man. It is also apparent that the instrumentalities shown may be differently arranged and that by a rearrangement certain of the elements may be consolidated, but the form shown is simple and as it seems to me, serves the desired purpose of affording both a screening and. nonscreening chute.
