Description
WARREN T. KELLOGG,
on TROY, Nnw vonk.
lMPRovEMENT IN Guam-comes.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,753, dated May 4, 1875; application filed September 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WARREN T. KELLOGG, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a certain Improvement in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to that class of currycombs which are provided on the back with a folding mane-comb; and my improvement consists in combining such folding mane-comb with the knockers of the curry-comb in such a manner that both separate bea-rings and separate pivots or journ als are dispensed with, both for the purpose of simplifying the construction and connection of these parts, and adding strength to the comb along the line of strain caused by the blows on the knockers in strikingl the comb against a fixed object to clear its teeth.
1n the annexed drawings, Figure 1" is a perspective view, showing the back of my improved combined curry and mane comb. Fig.
2 is a detail view, in perspective, of one of the.
knockers, showing its under side as it appears before its application to the combframe.
The same letters of reference are employed in both figures in the designation of identical parts.
The curry-comb proper, marked A, may be of any preferred or approved pattern. The example illustrated consists of a sheetmetal plate back, bent down on either side, and serrated along the side edges to forin the eXterior toothbars, the intermediate tooth-bars being of nfshape, and riveted to the sheetmetal back. The handle B is secured upon a shank, b, riveted to a triangular plate, C, which is, in turn, riveted to the sheet-metal back of the comb. The knockers D, made preferably of malleable cast-iron, have the form clearly shown in Fig. A2, and do not, in this respect, materially differ from the kind heretofore employed on this class of currycombs, except that each is provided with a bearing, d, on its side, open at one end, and closed by a head, di, at the other end.
The bearings of a pair of knockers are necessarily arranged right-handed and left-handed, respectively, in order to bring them in line with each other when the knockers are applied to the back of the curry-comb, in the manner clearly shown in Fig. l. These bearings receive the journals of the mane-comb E, which is capable of being folded down 011 the back of the curry-comb in one direction; but has a broad-faced tooth-bar, as usual, to prevent its turning beyond a perpendicular to the back of the curry-comb in the opposite direction. A
Thejournals of the mane-comb are formed upon and constitute a part of the base-bar of the same, projecting from either end thereof. In thus holding the mane-comb in position by and forming bearings for the journals forming integral parts of the same in the knoekers, simplifies the construction of this class of combined curry and mane combs to the eX- tcnt of dispensing with extra bearing for the mane-comb and eXtra rivets for securing such bearings, aswell as obvia-ting the necessity of using separate pivots, heretofore always employed where the knockers have been combined with the inane-comb; and, besides, additional strength is imparted to the curryconib by reason of this combination of the knockers and the mane-comb along a line where strength is more particularly wanted.
I prefer the particular manner shown of constructing and combining the knockers with the mane-comb; but this may be considerably varied as to the form of the knockers, and the shape and location of the bearings, without departing from the principle of my invention.
What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The shouldered knockers D, provided with studs for riveting, and bearings (l for the journals of the mane-comb, open at one end, and closed, as at d', at the other, all substantially as specified.
1n testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WARREN T. KELLOGG.
