Description

F. E. KRAUSS PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHER Filed Sept. 15, 1923 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHER.
Application filed September 15,
This invention relates to a portable chemical fire extinguisher and more particularly to that type which .is provided with an expansion chamber at the riser or ascending pipe in order to prevent the so-calledpushing or overflowing of the. apparatus. In apparatus of this kind as hitherto constructed the expansion chamber was arranged within the shell at the outside of the ascending pipe, an opening in the wall of the ascending pipe putting the interior of the ascending pipe and the chamber in conmiunication. In this known construction certain dilliculties arose in the manufacture of the chamber itself as well as in its combination with the ascending pipe. These drawbacks have been completely eliminated by the improved construction, and at the same time further technical advantages have been obtaii'ied. The invention consists essentially in disposing the expansion chamber at the mouth of the ascending pipe. The chamber is preferably made of plain cylindrical shape and is carried through the top of the shell and thus lends itself to the simple and substai'itial attachn'ient of the ascending pipe, which need no longer be fixed at the inside of the upper portion of the shell, which is generally accessible with difficulty. The nozzle of the extinguisher is preferably arranged directly upon the expansion chamber.
An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the drawing by way of example, the improved extinguisher being shown in longitudinal section.
Referring to the drawing a is the shell of the extinguisher, which may have any suitable shape, which contains a bottle of 1923, Serial No. 662,899, and in Germany September 16, 1922.
acid 7) or any other device for producing gas under pressure when actuated by a striking-pin c. In the interior of the extinguisher the ascending pipe (1 is provided upon the upper end of which the expansion chamber a is mounted. Upon the latter is lie-led the spraying nozzle f, for instance at the side, as shown. The chamber 6 is secured in the cover of the extinguisher and may partly project beyond it. I
In the example shown the chamber a is soldered into the cover r and upon it is attached one end. of the handle 7i. The handle may obviously be ditlierently disposed, for instance at the side, particularly if the shell is conical. Instead of soldering the expansion chamber 0 into the cover r of the extinguisher, it may be screwed into it, a suitable screw socket and stuffing box being provided, so that the chamber together with the ascending pipe may be withdrawn from the shell whenever desired. ()ther modifications within the ambit of the claims will easily suggest themselves.
IV hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is1-- In a tire extinguisher, the combination of a shell, a cylindrical expansion chamber penetrating the top of said shell and fixed in it, a nozzle at the side of the outer por tion of said expansion chamber. and an ascending pipe opening into the lower end of said expansion chamber and having a small diameter in relation to that of the eX- pansion chamber and being of uniform diameter in all its length. I
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRIEDRICH EMIL KRAUSS.
