Be it known that I, JonsEPH Gr. PLAoE'rTn, a citizen of theV United States, residing at Port Arthur, in the county of Jefferson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in burners adapted to use a liquid fuel, such as crude oil or the like.
An important object of the invention is to provide means whereby the liquid fuel, such as crude oil, is introduced into the presence of steam, to be thoroughly atomized and vaporized thereby, forming a gaseous mixture which is highly eii'cient in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the above mentioned character, which is simple in oonstruction, inexpensive to manufacture, and convenient in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,-

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a burner casing or head, as a whole, comprising upper and lower casing sections 11 and 12, which are preferably cylindrical. These casing sections have chambers 13, which are cylindrical, and have their inner open ends arranged adjacent to each other.
Disposed between the casing sections 11 and 12, is a partition plate 14, serving to separate the chambers 13, and provided with a central vertical opening or port 14, disposed concentric to the chambers 13.
The casing sections 11 and 12 are secured together by bolts 15, also passing through openings 16, plate 14.
T he. upper casing section 11 is provided! at Vits forward' portion with a gas outletv opening 17, having' an inclined upper wall 1S. The opening 17 has forwardly diverging side walls 19, as shown.
A steam supply opening or port 2O leads into the top of the upper chamber 13, and a portion of this opening is screw-threaded, for receiving the screw-threaded end of a steam supply pipe 21. This steam supply pipe has connection with a steam pipe 22, through the medium of a coupling 24. The pipe 22 is equipped with a valve 24.
Leading into the lower end of the lower or oil chamber 13 is an opening or port 25,'onev end of which is screw-threaded, for the reception of the screw-threaded end of formed in the partition an oil supply pipe 26. This oil supply pipe passes through the pipe 27, and through the pipe 26 into the oil chamber 13. This oil is then forced in a vertical stream through the opening 14', into the atomizing and mixing'chamber 13 above the plate 14. This vertical stream of oil projects upwardly and impinges against the upper wall of the casing section 11, and is sprayed thereby, the same falling toward the plate 14. This sprayed oil is subjected to the action Vof the steam supplied to the pipe 21, and is furgaseous mixture discharges through the opening 17 and is ignited at the outlet end of such opening.
When the burner is stopped, valves 24 and 29 are closed. Valve 30 may now be opened, and steam will be supplied into and through the pipe .26, upon the valve 24 being again opened. The` steam is supplied through the pipe 26 to blow out the oil whichA accumulates within the pipe 26. Y Y

Having thusdescribed my invention, I claim:
A burner ofthe character described comprising a casing having a substantially cylindrical mixing chamber and an oil preheating chamber, and an outlet opening leading from the mixing chamber, 4a partition plate extendingbetween said cham-V bers and provided substantially centrally thereof with an upwardly extending passage, means for supplying oil under Ypressure into the oil chamber whereby the oil will be forced through the upwardly extending opening and impinge against the upper wall of the mixing chamber to be sprayed thereby, and means cf'introducingv steam into the mixing chamber.
