UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS D. BRODHEAD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND ALBERT F. LAUTEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANS.
Speciiicaicn formirg part of Letters Patent No. 162,618, dated April 27, 1875; application fi'ed March 8, 1875.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS D. BRODHEAD, of Boston, Suti'olk county, Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Sectional Cans, of which the following is a speciiication:
The purpose of this improvement is to permit ready access to be had to the interior of cans for containing milk or oysters, or for other uses, the filling orifice or month of which cans is too contracted to admit of passage of a persons hand to the interior for the purpose ot' thoroughly cleaning the latter.
The drawings accompanying-this specification represent, in Figure 1, a sectional elevation, and, in Fig. 2, a horizontal section of a milk-can containing my improvement; Fig. 3 being` a horizontal sect-ion ot' its removable base or bottom.
In these drawings, A represents a milk or oyster can, of which A1 is the straight cylin dricalportiou or body; B, the breast; C, the filling orifice or mouth, and D the handle, such elementary features being common to cans of this class, and containing` nothing ot' my invention.
In carrying out my improvement, which has grown out of my experiments with an invention patented to lne on the first day of December, 1874, I remove the ordinary bottom .of the can, and leave the cylinder A open at bottom, and I attach, by solder or otherwise, to the lower edge of the cylinder, a stout metallic ring or band, E, upon the outer periphery of which I cast or aiix several studs, a c, by which the bottom is attached. The removable bottom or base ofthe can is shown at C, as composed, preferably, ot' cast metal, and in the form of a shallow cup, whose internal diameter corresponds to that of the exterior ofthe band E, and Within the inner side wall or periphery ofthe bottom G I create several obliquely-disposed or sloping grooves, b b, which correspond in position with the studs a a, and in connection with them constitute a clutch or adjustable conncction. by which the bottom is readily and expeditiously applied to or removed from the remainder of the can. I prefer to inclose between the upper edge of' the bottom G and the ledge c of the band E, against which such edge abuts, an elastic ring or other proper packing, to efectually prevent escape of contents ot' the can at the joint between the body and base. The advantages attaching to this construction ot' can for containing` milk, oysters, and many other uses, are practically the same as set forth in my patent before named, and will be apparent to all, but I have found in practice that in some respects the construction herein explained is to be preferred to that shown in my said patent.
I claim- A can, formed with a breast and contracted mouth at one end, and provided at the opposite end with a separate and removable bottom that fits and connects with the can-body, substantially in the Ina-nner and for the purposes set forth.
FRANCIS D. BRODLIEAD.
