Description
UNITED STATES JOHN H. STEINER, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,585, dated April 27, 1875; application filed April 10, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. STEINEE, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Fire-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification: Y
My invention consists of an attachment to be used in connection with lire-extinguishers, the same consisting of a case for containing extra charges of chemicals, so constructed as to be attached to, and carried with, the extinguisher, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Figure l is a side elevation of an extinguisher With the case attached. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the case detached.
Chemical tire-extinguishers, as is Well known, have come into extensive use 5 but ordinarily their utility is limited, for the reason that when once exhausted the operator has no means at hand for recharging them, so that ordinarily they can be used but once at'a fire. The ob` ject of my invention is to obviate this difficulty by providing a case that can be attached to the extinguisher, and in which extra charges can be carried, so that the operator, when the extin guisheris exhausted, shall have the means at hand for recharging it, thus making it available for use several times in quick succession.
In order to accomplish this object I construct a case, as represented in Fig. 2, consisting of two or more tubes, D, of proper size for containing a suitable quantity of alkali"for a charge, and a corresponding number of tubes, 0, of the requisite size to contain a bottle of acid, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l. These several tubes are secured to a curved plate, I, adapted to lit snugly against the side of the extinguisher or vessel A, there being straps C secured to the edges of the plate 1, by which the case is buckled fast to the vessel A, as represented in Fig. 1. Each of the tubes is provided with a detachable cap or cover, a, to hold the contents safely in place, and permit access thereto when desired.
It is obvious that, if preferred, the plate I may be dispensed with, and the tubes be secured to the strap in any suitable manner; or, instead of tubes, it may be made in the forni of a box, with partitions to keep the materilals separate, the peculiar construction or form being of no special importance, so long as it is adapted to be used in the manner and for the purpose described.
By the use of such a device the operator is always provided with an extra supply ot' chemicals, and thus has ready at hand the means of recharging the extinguisher at any point Where Water can be obtained.
I do not limit myself to any specified form or number of compartments, as these are merely matters of choice or expediency.
The manner of using the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description and this illustration.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- A case, substantially such as described, for containing chemicals, and adapted to be used in connection With a tireextinguisher, as set forth.
` JOHN H. STEINER.
