l I The present disclosure of 'the invention' .relates to a mechanical. toy simulating a duck, but it may be stated that a number of novel features herein disclosed lmay be 5 embodied also in connection with toys simu- Ilating other living' creatures.`
One object of the invention is to provide a toy. having ve lifelike.movements, provisions being ma e in the form of construc- 1o tion shown to alternatel turn'the head from side to side, to move't e lower 'aw or bill section upwardl and downwardly, and to sway'the body fiom side to side, thus effectively imitating the actions ofv a duck or like fowl.
Further objects are to provide novel means for turnin the head, operating the lower `jaw or bi1? section and swaying the body.
A still further object is to provide a con-A struction in whichvthe lower ,jaw or bill section is snap ed upwardly against the upper 'aw or b1ll section, each time it is I lowered or released, the noise thus caused imitating the Aquacking of a duck. In
this connection, a further aim is to provide the hedd and the upper jaw orbill section with .a recess which produces a different sound from that which would be produced by permitting4 the lower bill section or jaw .30 to Snap upwardly against an extended flat surface, the sound produced being a rather I g effective imitation of a ducks quack.

The form of construction selected for illustration in the present application is rather specifically described hereinafter with the understanding however that within the sco e of the invention as claimed, numerous mo ifications may ybe made, including the, possible adaptation ofv certain features of the toyto toys representing living creatures a horizontal section on line other than the duck illustrated in the present showing.
The numeral 1 designates a central, vertical, comparatively thick body section which simulates the body of a duck, said body having a recess 2 formed in its lower edge and opening through its opposite sides for a purposel vto appear. Two spaced disks 7 and 8 are shown within the recess 2, said disks being connected by a radially extending cam 9- and one of said disks bein provided on its outer 'side with an eccentrlc 10. Axle stubs 1l extend Qut wardly from the disks 7 and 8 and may if. desired be cast 'integrally therewith, or the disks and cam may be cast around asin le axleforming rod or the like, or other a equate construction may be employed. The stubs 11, in the construction shown, are upwardly inserted through slots l2 in a air of wing simulating body sections 13 w v'ch are `secured in any suitable manner against opposite sidesA of the body section 1,*said sectlons 13 extending across the recess 2, to
close opposite sides of the latter. By means of anysuitable retainers, suchas the plates 14, the axle-stubs 11 are rotatably held in Vthe slots or notches 12. .The outer ends of these stubs are provided with wheels 15- whichA are preferably rather heavy and are provded with rubber/tires 16 to obtain traction.- Itmay here be explainedl that the points at which the wheels 15 are' connected with the axle stubs 11, are preferably eccentricto the treads of said wheels, so that when thetoy is being pulledor pushed along 11 ing.

The upper end of the shaft 17 is suitably secured to a head 20 which is provided with a stationary upper bill section or jaw 21 and a movable lower bill section or jaw 22 which is ivoted at its rear end as indicated at 23. n the present showing, the lower side of the bill or jaw section 21`andthe head 20 are formed with a recess 24 which contains a coiled tension spring 25 having its rear end anchored to the head, lwhile its front end is connected with the lower jaw. or bill section 22, for the purpose of upwardly snapping the latter against the jaw or bill section 2l, each time said lower jaw or bill section is pulled downwardly and released. Novel provision is made for alternately pulling the section 22 downwardl and releasing it, as `hereinafter describe In the simple construction illustrated, a longitudinal slot 26 is formed in the bill section 22 and this slot receivesthe relatively narrow intermediate portion 27 ofV a sheet metal plate1 said plate having widened ends 28 and 29 which' contact respectively with the upper and lower sides of said section 22. The plate is inserted through the slot 26 and is then turned so that it stands transversely of said slot, causing its widened ends 28 and 29 to hold it against any vertical movement with respect to the bill section 22. The spring 25 is connected suitably with the upper end of the plate, and a wire jaw-operating link 30 is pivoted to the lower end thereof,`said link-bein receivable in a lon itudinal passage 31 w ich is formed in t e shaft 17, said passage being preferably in the form of a groove in the front side of said shaft. The lower end of the link 3()v is pivoted at 32 to a substantially horizontal.
The front end of the lever 33, is preferably provided withfan -upstanding extension' 37 received slidably in the groove 36 and servp' ing to prevent dislocation of the lever with respect to the fulcrum lpin 35, when the front end of said lever is moved downf wardly under certain circumstances, hereinafter-,set forth, V.At a point behind the connection 32, the lever 30 bears against the up er end 38 of the opening 34, as shown whereupon the spring 25 4immediately snaps the jaw 22 upwardly against the jaw 21, producing a noise to imitate the quacking of aduck. If the toy is moved rearwardly, the cam 9 rocks the lever 33 about the auxiliary fulcrum `38 thus also pulling downwardly upon the link 30 to swing the jaw 22 downwardly and then release it. It is during this movement of tlie lever about the auxiliary fulcrum 38 that the extension 37 of the lever 33 slides downwardly with regard to the fulcrum pin 35, preventin the lever and pin from being relatively islocated.
`Whilc the bill section or jaw 22 is being operated as above described and the body 1 is being swayed b the eccentric wheels 15, the shaft 17 is oscillated to turn the head 20 from side to side. To effect this oscillation, a pitman 39 is en aged with the eccentric 410 and is connecte with a lateral crank 40 on the shaft 17, the latter connection being loose to permit turning of the shaft `about its vertical axis.
By providing the novel construction shown and described, or a substantial equivalent thereof, a toy is produced which may be easily and inexpensively manufactured and sold at small cost, yet will produce a great deal of amusement. Particular attention is directed to the fact that by having the bill section 22 provided with the raising spring 25, and alternately depressin and releasing said bill section, it is cause to quickly snap upwardly against the u per section 21, effectively imitating the quae ng rof. a duck. The sound is rendered much wheels, is a very amusing representation of the waddling of a duck. l w As excellent results'may be obtained from the details disclosed, they may well be followed, but within the scope of the invention .as claimed, lnumerous modifications may be n'iade, as above suggested.
