Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HOWARD KRUM, OF BONNERS FERRY, IDAHO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES EARL MCGLOGKLIN AND ELMER- DAVID TRAVER, BOTH OF BONNERS FERRY, IDAHO.
TON GS.
My present invention has reference to a tongs for gripping cables, wires or the like, and the object of the invention is the provision of a device for this purpose, characteristic of simplicity in construction and thorough ei'iiciency in operation.
A. further object of the invention is the provision of a tongs for this purpose which will effectively grip a cable or similar article '0 between the jaws thereof, and wherein the increase in pull upon the handle of the device will effectively increase the grip of the jaws upon the cable.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a satisfactory embodiment of the improvement and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved tongs.
Figure 2 is an edge view thereof with no parts in section.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevation with the aw portions of the improvement in section.
liigure a is a sectional view on the line lit of Figure As disclosed by the drawings my improved tongs comprises a pair of curved arms 1 and 2 respectively. These arms have their outer portions crossed, arranged in lap ping connection and pivotally connected, as at 8. The arm 2, at the portions thereof extending beyond the pivot 23, is flattened and has its inner face concaved. longitudi .nally, as at 4, to provide the jaw. The portion of the arm 1, extending beyond the pivot is likewise flattened and has its inner face widened from its inner edge and the outer edge of the said widened portion is rounded, inwardly to provide a second jaw The inner end of the jaw is flared or curved mmvardly, as at 6, and the opposite end of the said jaw is substantially straight. Thus 1925. Serial No. 41,843.
the active face of the jaw 5 is centrally bowed inwardly.
The arms 1 and 2 are rounded away from each other and have their outer ends formed with eyes 6 for links 7, and passing through the said links T there is a ring member 8 that provides the handle of the tongs.
The arms 1 and are swung so that their jaws 4 and 5 are moved away from each other to permit of the arrangement of a cable, wire or the like therebetween. A pull is then exerted upon the handle ring 8, which swings the arms 1 and 2 toward each other, likewise bringing the jaws l and 5 t0- ward each other, so that the cable 9 is effectively gripped between the jaws. Be
cause of the particular and peculiar forma tion of the jaws 4 and 5 the greater the pull on the handle 8, in an upward direct-ion, the tighter the cable will be gripped between the aws.
Having described the invention, I claim A cable tongs comprising oppositely disposed arms which cross each other and are pivoted together adjacent one end thereof, the end of one arm adjacent the pivot being flattened by having its inner face conca-ved longitudinally to form a jaw, the other arm being likewise flattened adjacent the pivot points and having its inner face widened from its inner edge and the outer edge'of the widened portion rounded inwardly to form a second jaw, the inner end of the second jaw being curved outwardly and the oppo site end of the second jaw being substantially straight and the said second jaw being bowed inwardly with one end curved inopposed relation, and means attached to the arms opposite the jaws whereby to move said jaws toward and away from each other.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN HOWARD KRUM.
