Description
C. E. RUPPERT LOG HOOK Filed May 20, 1924 jlll' WITNESS:
U. KEM sari INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Nov, .25, 1924;.
CHARLES E. RUPPER-T, OF WESTMINSTER, MARYLAND.
LOG HOOK Application filed May 20, 1924. Serial No. 714:,737.
whereby a chain or cable may be easily and securely attached to a log for the purpose of snaking.
Another ob ect of the invention 1s the pro vision of means for attaching a chain or cable to the tongs so that a direct pull along the longitudinal center of the tongs may be exerted and the engaging end of the latter maintained in gripping position.
With the above and other objects in View the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction,
to be hereinafter more fully described, il
lustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of logging tongs constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same.
Referring to the drawings in detail where in like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown as comprising a pair of pivotally connected members and 11, the pivotal connection being indicated at 12. One end of each of these members is provided with an inwardly curved portion 13 which terminates in a penetrating or engaging point 14;, the points being so arranged as to extend inwardly toward one another.
The member 10 includes an arm 15 to which is pivotally secured a link or clevis 16, the arm being provided with a plurality of openings 17 so that the links 16 may be adjusted thereon. This link has secured thereto one end of a chain or cable 18.
The member 11 is provided with a relatively short arm 19 and pivotally secured to this arm as shown at 20 is one end of a link 21 in which is rotatably mounted a guide roller 22 over which the chain or cable 18 passes. lVhen a pull is exerted upon the chain or cable 18, the lineof draft will be in a direct longitudinal central line, the link 21 automatically adjusting itself for this purpose. At the same time the pull will cause the engaging ends 1d of the members 10 and 11 to tightly grip a log L or other object.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the ap pended claim.
Having described the invention what \S claimed is A pair of tongs comprising a pair o pivotally connected members, oppositely disposed inwardly extending engaging points at one end of said members, a cable having one end secured to the opposite end of one of said members, a link having one end pivotally secured to the opposite end of the other member and a guide carried by the link for receiving the cable, whereby the engaging points of the members may be forced inwardly and pull exerted cen trally and longitudinally of the tongs.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
CHARLES E. RUPPERT
