Description
April 19,1927) mzmsz .w. s. PINE I i SHIELD FOR CASING SLIP HANDLES Filed March 11, 1926 IN V Ely TOR.
Si/ aze- BY 47/21 4 A TTORNE Y Patented Apr. 19, 1927.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM S. PINE, 0F VENTUBA, CALIFORNIA.
SHIELD FOB CASING-SLIP HANDLES.
Application filed March 11, 1926.
In rotary drilling of oil and other wells it is necessary to frequently break joints in the pipe and in the tools used in drilling the hole. In so doing two wrenches are used, one above and the other below the joint that is to be broken. When the joint is broken the pipe or tool that is in the hole must be held against slipping down into the hole. To do this, slips are used between the spider which is mounted in the rotary table or between the table and the pipe or tool that projects in the hole. These slips have teeth that engage the pipe and have a tapered outside that engages the table and have handles that are used by the workmen in positioning the slips. Heretofore there have been no means to protect the hands of the workmen in case the wrenches or other tools slip before being firmly fixed on the pipe. When the 'wrenches slip it frequently happens that they engage the hands of the workmen and crush the same between the wrench and table. It is the object of my invention to provide a protecting shield for slip handle; that will prevent the wrenches from crushing or otherwise injuring the hands of the workmen in case the wrenches slip.
In the drawings forming a part of this application Fig. l is a perspective view of a slip with my improved shield on the handle thereof. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the handle shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged back View of the handle and shield detached from the slip.
Referring to the drawings, 5 is the body of the slip to which the handle is attached by bolt 6 which is passed through holes in the lower ends of the side members 7 of the handle. To these side members are attached the hand protecting shield consisting of side members 8 and back member 9. Members 8 are substantially triangular in shape but any other shape may be used that will perform their function. Members 8 are connected by back member 9 which is preferably in shape a parallelogram. Members 8 and 9 are preferably formed of heavy sheet Seria1 No. 94,102.
steel and by bending members 8 to a plane at right angles to the plane of member 9. Near the top members 8 are pierced for the reception of the hand bar 10 which is riveted or otherwise secured therein. It will be observed that the handle is hingedly attached to the body and turns outwardly or away from the pipe when the slip is in use and that member 9 is adjacent to the pipe. Now in case a wrench slips and engages the handle it turns it down until members 8 engage the table and they then support the wrench. The hand of the workman is also carried down but members 8 and 9 prevent the wrench from crushing the hand or otherwise injuring it. By this construction all danger to the workmans hand by the slipping of wrenches is avoided.
Having described my invention I claim 1. In a well drilling apparatus in which slips are used to hold the tools from slipping down the casing when casing joints are broken, the combination of a slip body; a shield comprising a back plate and triangular side plates of heavy sheet metal; a hand bar extending from one side plate to the other side plate and connected to both and spaced from the back plate; and means to connect said shield to said slip body.
2. In a well drilling apparatus in which slips are used to hold the tools from slipping down the casing when casing joints are broken, the combination of a slip body; a shield comprising a back member and two side members and a hand bar extending from one side member to the other side member and connected to both and spaced from the back member, said side and back members being of a configuration and strength to protect the hand of the operator from being engaged by a wrench in case of slippage; and means to connect said shield to said slip body.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 1st day of February, 1925.
WV'ILLIAM S. PINE.
