LINEMANS LIFTING AND HOISTING DEVICE.
Application filed October 1, 1926. Serial No. 138,891.
This invention relates to a lifting and hoisting device for linemen and others concerned with the mounting of heavy objects on poles, as for instance the installing of transformers on the poles which support electric conductors.
Its object is to provide a handy, portable apparatus which a lineman can take with him without impediment and so obviate the necessity for the use of cumbersome lifting tackle.
The raising of a heavy transformer near to the top of a high pole and the subsequent maneuvering of the same into correct position frequently requires the use of devices of no inconsiderable weight and bulk, and my device is designed to eliminate this disadvantage thus saving delay, cost and trouble.
I eifect these results by the adoption of a pivotal lever of the first order, carried by a fulcrum which is clamped to the pole at or near its upper extremity. At one end of the lever is secured a block and tackle in connection with the load to be raised; at the other end is a hauling cable. The position of the latter attachment afiords a leverage of say two to one on the load. Guy-ropes on each side attached, say mid-way of the fulcrum and the haulage cable complete the elements of the device.
In the drawings herewith, which form part of this application, Fig. 1 is a general elevation of the device showing the disposition of the salient parts in their Working position; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the bifurcated clamp for carrying the lever; and Fig. 3, a plan view of same, both being to an enlarged scale as compared with the view in Fig. 1.
The top end of the line pole 1 carries a substantial clamp 2 which is formed in halves and bifurcated at 8 to receive the lever 4 which may conveniently consist of a standard hard-wood cross-bar. This latter pivots at the fulcrum 5 and carries at its longer end 6 a haulage rope attachment, and also at 7 eyes for the guy ropes 8 and 9,
"with a link at 10 for the block and tackle 11.
Part of a suspended transformer is shown at 12, which when the haulage rope 13 is slackened, assumes a vertical position below the dotted lines 14 of the lever 4, and can then be swung towards or slightly around the pole 1, the guy ropes being utilized for steadyino' effect should this be necessary.
The anchor-spike 15 functions to prevent any tilting effect on the clamping ring 2 when the load comes on the fulcrum 5. It is secured at a suitable angle as shown and tends to pierce the wood, thus preventing any appreciable angular movement of the clamp about the pivot 5.
I Having now particularly described my invention, what I desire to be protected in by Letters Patent is:-
1. In a linemans pole hoisting device of the character described the combination comprising, a clamping member adapted to encircle a post, said member having a radial projection, said projection being forked at its extremity, said fork being spanned by a fulcrum pin, a lever of the first order pivoted on said pin, a hauling cable attached to one extremity of said lever, and a block and tackle attached to the other.
2. in a linemans hoisting device for a pole, the combination comprising, a clamping member adapted to encircle a post, said member being in two similar semicircular parts bolted together at two diametral and lateral extensions of said semicircular parts, said member having a radial extension formed by the prolongation of said lateral extensions, said radial extension being forked, said fork being spanned by a fulcrum pin, a lever of the first order pivoted on said pin, a block and tackle secured to the shorter end of said lever, a hauling rope attached to the longer end of said lever, guy ropes attached to said lever on each side thereof, all substantially as described and shown.
3. A linemans lifting and hoisting device for pole service, comprising, a clampingring adapted to encircle a pole, said ring being formed in halves with lateral diametral extensions for bolting together, one pair of said lateral extensions being prolonged and forming an extension radial to said pole, said radial extension being bifurcated at its extremity, the said bifurcation being spanned by a fulcrum pin, an anchor-spike angularly disposed to said pole and secured to said lateral extension of clamping-ring on side of said pole opposite to said fulcrum and adapted to pierce the said pole by the action of a downward strain on said fulcrum, a lever of the first order fulcrumed upon said pin, a haulage rope attached to the longer end of said lever, and a block and tackle attached to the shorter end of said lever, all substantially as described and shown. 10
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature.
SIMON P. GRANT.
