  • This invention relates to cord guiding devices such as are used in the manufacture of weftless cord fabric. It has for its object the increase in the accuracy with which the cords can be guided to the rubber sheets. A more specific object is to carry the cords against the rubber sheet with a smooth surfaced roller, and to guide the cords up to as nearly as possible the last instant before they are received upon the surface of thls roll.

This invention relates to cord guiding devices such as are used in the manufacture of weftless cord fabric. It has for its object the increase in the accuracy with which the cords can be guided to the rubber sheets. A more specific object is to carry the cords against the rubber sheet with a smooth surfaced roller, and to guide the cords up to as nearly as possible the last instant before they are received upon the surface of thls roll.

Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic elevation showing the cord supply and cord uiding devices and a rubber coating calen er;

Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 2 on substantially line 3-3 of the latter figure.
The cords 0 are supplied upon a creel 10 of any standard or desired construction. From the creel they pass throu h a thread board 11 and over tensioning an equalizing rolls 12. The sheet of cords thus formed passes over guide rolls 13 andl l, through a spacing comb 15, and over the uiding device to be later described to a r0 1 16. This roll is set so as to press the cords against a sheet of rubber 17 supported on a calender roll 18. The calender is likewise provided with rolls 19, 20 and 21, all journaled in a frame 22 in the usual manner. Between rolls 18 and 21 is a feed of rubber 23 and between rolls 19 and 20 is a feed 24, the former producing the sheet 17 and the latter a sheet 25. The two sheets thus formed, together with the sheet of cords, pass between rolls 18 and 20 to form the composite sheet 26.
My improved guiding device comprises a shoe 27 supported upon a rod 28 mounted in the calender frame. 2 and 3 the separate cords forming the sheet are received upon the flat surface of shoe 27, being initially separated and spaced properly by comb 15. The grooves 30 preserve this spacing up to the instant when the cords are received upon the surface of roll 16. Due to the tangency of the surface bearing the grooves 30, and to the fact that the shoe is cut away at 29 to permit the point 31 of the shoe to extend as faras possible along the surface of the roll, an extremely accurate guiding condition is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A cord guiding device for the production of Weftless cord fabric comprising a smooth surfaced roll adapted to guide a sheet of unconnected cords to a rubber sheet, and a shoe having one surface substantially tangent to the roll and the opposite surface cut away to permit the tangent surface to approach the roll closely. the tangent surface of the shoe being grooved to receive the cords in spaced relation, whereby the cords are positively guided until substantially the instant they contact with the roll.
2. Apparatus for the production of weftless cord fabric of the type wherein a sheet of unconnected cords are guided by a smooth surfaced roll against a sheet of rubber upon a calender roll, characterized by a guiding 80 member presenting a grooved guiding surface tagent to the smooth surfaced roll and furnishing the cords with guiding and spacing contact up to substantially the instant ofutheir contact with the smooth surfaced 35 re MARTIN CAS'TRIOUM,
