CORD-GUIDING DEVICE.
Application filed June 26, 1926. Serial No. 118,761!- The present invention relates to a cord guiding device particularly adapted for the production of .weftless cord fabric. It has for its object a guiding device which will facilitate changes being made in the spacing of the cords. Ithas for a further object the provision of a spacing device which will give the cords a definite spaced relation which will be constant and not dependent; upon measurements made by the workman.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic side elevation of a weftless cord unit embodying my improved guiding device;

The cords c are led from the creel 10 through a thread board 11 to the customary tensioning and equalizing rolls 12. The web 25 of cords thus formed is passed-around guide rolls 14 and 15 and through a spacing comb 16. This comb is preferably made adjustable and may be constructed in accordance with the disclosure of either of my prior Patents 1,500,232, July 8, 1924, or 1,531,689,
March 31, 1925. From the comb the cords pass the spacing device, which constitutes my present invention and which will be described later, and are pressed by roll 17,
5 preferably having a smooth surface, against the rubber sheet 18, on the calender roll 19. The calender has been shown as of the four roll type having inaddition to roll 19,ro]. ls 20, 21 and 22, all mounted in a frame 23.
4 Between rolls 19 and 22 is placed a feed of rubber 24 producing the sheet 18. Between rolls 20 and 21 is placed a feed of rubber 25 producing a sheet 26. The two sheets of rubber, together with the web of "cords 13,
45 are passed between rolls 19 and 21 producing the composite sheet 27.
My improved spacing device is mounted upon brackets 28 carried by the frame of the calender. Journaled for rotation in 50 these brackets is a member 29 having ends 30 of reduced diameter, fitting in suitable hearings in the brackets. In these reduced ends are formed holes 31 which co-act with Fig. 2 is a side elevationon a larger scale a pin 32 rcleasably carried in a hole in the bearing. By this means the member 29 can be held. in any one of a number of desired positions.
In use the cords are first threaded into the machine while the member 29 is held b pin 32 in the position of Fig. 4. Comb 16 is adjusted togive the approximate spacing desired and then member 29 is rotated to bring the proper one of the guiding portions into operation. In Fig. 2 the guiding portion has been shown in use. During the running of the calender and the production of the fabric, the cords pass through the grooves 40 in guiding portion 33 and are placed by it in accurate spaced relation on roll 17. If it is desired at any time to change the spacing, the member 29 is rotated into the position of Fig. 4 so that one of the smoth surfaces 37 is brought to the bottom, the surface chosen being one of those adjacent the guiding portion to which change is to be made.
The comb 16 may now be readjusted and the cords arranged evenly upon the smooth portion 37 The member 29 is now rotated to bring the desired guiding portion lowermost and the cords directed into the grooves beginning at one side of the sheet and passing progressively across it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In the manufacture of weftless cord fabric, a cord guiding device of the type wherein a web of separate cords is arranged bya spacing device upon a smooth surfaced roll by which the web is pressed against the rubber, characterized by that construction of the spacing device which comprises a multisided member rotatably mounted so as to ex tend the full Width of the web and having alternate cord guiding portions and smooth surfaces of sufiicient elevation to hold the cords clear of the guidin portion, the sevortlons havlng cord 15 rated by smooth surfaces of suflicient elevation to free the cords from adjacent guiding grooves.
3. In the manufacture of weftless cord fabric, a cord guiding device of the type wherein a web of separate cords is arranged by a spacing device upon a smooth surfaced roll by which the web is pressed against the rubber, characterized by the formation of the spacing device as a multi-sided member havin alternate cord guiding portions and smoot 1 surfaces of suflicient elevation to hold the cords clear of the guiding portions, the several cord guiding portions being of a different spacing.
