AUTOMOBILE SIGNAL.
Application filed February This invention relates to automobile signals of that type adapted to be situated closeto the driver so that the same can be actuated readily While the vehicle is in motion, c
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and compact structure for use primarily on closed vehicle bodies and including .a foldable signal meinber which, when not in use is housed Within a container provided therefor so as thus yto be protected from the weather.
A furtherv object is to provide a signal device which, when unfolded and in use lsimula-tes a hand.
, Y A still furtherobject is to provide a signal device-easy to operate and which does not ,detract from the appearance of the vehicle to whichit is attached.
4 With the foregoing andother objects in .view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com- 'binationand arrangement of parts and in the details. of construction hereinafter described .and claimed, it being understood that .changesin theprecise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may he made Within'the scopelof what is claimed without departingl ,from theispirit of the invention.v
AIn the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown. Y 1
In said drawings,
Figure l is :an elevation of the signal device, its housing being shown open and in section and a portionof a supporting structure 'being also shown in section.
Figure 2` is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the signal device folded and housed.
.Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 Figure 1.
.y Referring to the iguresby characters ofl reference l designates an elongated housing which sformed of metal. This housing is adapted to be arranged substantially vertically upon a portion of the vehicle body indicated generally .at B. The housing `is yprovided with a hinged door 2 to which is connected a spring 3 secured in the housing and serving to hold thedoor normally open. This spring` is supported close to one of the walls ofthe housing where it will not inter- .'fere with the operation ofthe parts constituting the signal mechanism.
5, 1926. Serial No. 86,270.
Superposed pivots t and 5 are arranged within `the upper portionof the housing at equal distances from the open side thereof and mounted on the upper pivot 4 is an elongated strip 6 while another elongated strip Tis mounted on the pivot 5. These strips are pivotally connected,` at intermediate points to aconnecting strip 8, as shown at 9 and, as illustrated particularly lin Figure 3, the said connecting strip isv stepped in the direction of lits length. To the connecting strip are pivotally connected intermediate strips 10 and these strips 10 are connected to each other and to the strips 6 and 7 by short links 11. The outer end portions of the strips 6, 7 vand l0 are shaped to simulate the lingers of a hand. A short strip 12 simulating thethumb of a hand is pivotally connected to the strip'G close to the connecting strip 8, as shown at 13 and at a point below the pivot 13 this strip 12 is connected to a rod 14 which project-s into the upper portion of the housing 1 and is mounted on a pivot lljlocated close to but slightly above the pivot 4.' A spring 16 engages'the strip y6 and is preferably coiled about the pivot 4, one end of .this spring bearing against the inner Wall of the housing 1 as shown particularly at 17. Thus the spring serves to hold strip 6 normally elevated and `projected laterally from the housing 1v as shown in Figure 1. Zhen the strip is thus supported the other strips 7 and 10 are held in extended positions as shown in Figure 1 and the thumb strip 12 `is also held extended outwardly and upwardly.
A bracket 1S is attached to the inner side of the structure B and has a sleeve 19 pivotally comiectedthereto. An operating rod 2O is slidably mounted within this sleeve and is provided at vone end with a knob 21 or the like whereby it can be `actuated readily by -the occupant .of the vehicle. The other end of the rod projects into the housing 1 and is connected by a yspring 2:2' and a few chain llinks or the like indicated at 23, to the arm 6. An opening C is formed in the structure Bv so that the rod can work therein, this opening also receiving a lilik 24- one endof which -is pivotally connected to the sleeve 19 as indicated at 25. The other end of the link is connected by a link 26 or the like to an ear 27 projecting from -of the actuating member for shutting the door of the housing and holding it in closed position, and separate spring means re* leased by the swmglng movement of the actuating member in one direction for automatically opening the dooi1 and bringing the signal arm to active osition.
In testimony that claim the foregoing as my own, l .have hereto affixed my signature.
