KITCHEN TABLE.
Application filed October 7, 1924. Serial No. 742,175.
It is a purpose of the present invent-ion to provide, in a kitchen table, a construction of collapsible legs movable to a position under the dominant table top when folding leaves are not in use and extensible automatically when such leaves are raised into operative positions, said leaves, when disposed in such positions, providing for a greater area of table top.
Another purpose is to provide, in a table of this character, folding leaves, either one or both of which may be moved into operative position.
Still another purpose is the provision of means for automatically extending the legs to support the leaves, in conjunction with manual means operable against the automatic means for returning one or both of the central legs to normal position.
A further purpose is the provision of suitable guides on the under surface of the main table top and the leaves for the reception of the legs, the guides on the under surface of the main table top receiving the legs when in normal position while the guides on the leaves receive the legs when the leaves are disposed in operative positions.
A still further purpose. is the provision of a table of this kind so constructed that very little effort is required to support the folding leaves, the efiort necessary being the act of raising the leaves, in which case the supporting legs automatically assume positions under the leaves, and when it is desired to permit the leaves to restore to their collapsed or folding positions, it is simply necessary to pull a cord or small rope to return the legs to normal positions, in which case the leaves will automatically drop or fold.
It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in no way limitative and that, while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modifications of detail and desired proportions may be made in the apparatus according to the circumstances.
The invention comprises further features and combinations of parts to be: hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the kitchen table, showing the leaves collapsed.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing both leaves lifted or extended into operative positions, with the casters 18 removed.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of Fig ure 1.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 isa cross sectional view on line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Figure 7 is a detail view of a portion of one of the legs and showing its operating means. 7
Figure 8 is a sectional view on line 88 of Figure 3.
Figure 9 is a sectional view on line 99 of Figure 4.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the main table top and 2 the main supporting stationary legs and 3 and 4 denote the longitudinal side and end cleats which connect the stationary supporting legs 2, as
shown clearly in the bottom plan views.
Secured in spaced positions on the under surface of the table top 1 transversely thereof are outer and intermediate guide cleats 1 7 and 8. The adjacent edges of these cleats are cut on angles of forty-five degrees, thereby providing V-shaped dove-tail guideways 9. In view of this construction, the opposite edges of the intermediate cleat are both constructed on angles of forty-five degrees.
Secured at 10 to the under surfaces of foldable extensible leaves 11 (which are foldable due to thehinge connections at 12 with the main table top) are guide cleats 13 which are positioned so that their adjacent edge faces may assume positions coextensive with the guideways 9, thereby providing guideways 14. The adjacent edges to provide the guideways 14 are also out on angles of forty-five degrees, thereby making the guideways V-shaped.
The guideways 1 1 are diagonally opposed and mounted in the guideways 9 are the transverse extensions 15 of the extensible legs 16. These extensions 15 and the upper ends of the legs 16 are provided with dovetail V-shaped tongues 17 which engage with the guideways. The terminal portions of the legs 16 and the legs 2 have conventional form of roller bearings 18 which are detached and not used in Figure 2. The guide cleats 13 adjacent the hinge joints of the leaves are cut on angles of forty-five 'degrees, as shown at 19, in order to permit the leaves to fold Without the guide cleats obstructing this action.
Suitable substantially long coil springs 20 are connected at 21 to the frame of the table and pass over pulleys 22 and are, in turn, connected to the lateral extensions 15 of the legs 16. Obviously, when the leaves 11 are moved from theircollapsed or closed positions to horizontal extended positions, the springs 20 automatically tension on the legs and move them laterally oi? the table in such Wise as to permit the V-sh'aped tongues 17 to engage with and move in the guideways 14, thereby holding the leaves in operative positions.
Suitable pull cords or ropes 28 are conneeted to the lateral extensions 15 of the legs and ,pass over the pulleys i l and "have their other ends terminating in rings 25. By grasping the rings and pulling upon the cords or ropes, it is possible to return the legs 16 to their normal positions under the main table top against the action of the springs 20. W hen the legs are so moved as to position under the main table top, the leaves 11 return to their normal collapsed or folded positions.
The lateral extensions 15 are secured to the legs 16 by means of the angle plates 26 which are bolted at 27 to the legs, there being suitable screws 28 passing through the legs 16 and into the extensions 15.
The invention having been set forth, What is claimed is:
A table comprising frame and a main table top, a leaf hinged to the latter at the longitudinal edge of the same and toldable dowmvardly and provided on its under surface with a. guideyvay, a guideivay mounted on the under surface at the top in axial alignment with the 'guideway on the leaf when the latter is raised, a leg member slidably mounted in the guideway on the top and engageable with the guideway on the leaf when the leaf is raised to horizoi'ital position, a tensile springterminally secured to the leg member 'at the rear end of the same and having its remote terminal anchored to the top at a point lateral of the leg, a direetion pulley over which said spring is trained, and a pull cord secured to the leg member and trained over a guide pulley for moving the leg member in opposition to said spring.
In testimony Whereot' he aflixes his signature.
