- This invention relates-to improvements in portabletypewriting machines, and particularly to the carriage-operating mechanism.

means for guiding said pawl against said abutment and also for forcing said pawl into frictional engagement with the escapement-wheel after the stepping Vdog has Y*tripped to the aforesaid position, and means mounted adjacent said escapement-wheeh'a key-lever,operating connections between the key-lever and the arm, a pawl pivoted adjacent the free end of said arm, said pawl including a tooth-engaging lip and a projection vextending therebeyond in the direction of the pawl travel, stop-means for maintaining said pawl in a position substantially tangential to the escapement-wheel, said keylever being effective to cause said lip to engage the teeth of the escapement-wheel and to rotate the same in back-spacing direction, whereby to cause the stepping dog to trip over one tooth of the escapement-wheel and assume a position forV engagement with a new tooth thereof, and an abutment engageable by said projection for positively stopping the travel of said pawl after the stepping dog has reached the aforesaid position.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, letter-feeding mechanism for the carriage including an escapement-wheel and a stepping dog, an arm pivoted adjacent the escapement-wheel, a keylever, operating connections between the keylever and the arm, a stop limiting the rearward position of the arm, resilient means holding said arm againstthe stop, apawl pivoted adjacent the free end ofV said arm, stop-means including a spring maintaining said pawl on said arm in a position substantially tangential to the escapen'ient-Wheel, said key-lever operable to move said arm to cause the pawl to engage a tooth of the wheel and to rotate said wheel in back-spacing direction, the stepping dog being effective during such back-spacing operation to trip over one tooth of said escapement-wheel and lassume a position for engagement with the next succeeding tooth, and a stop including back-spacing travel of the pawl, said plate effective to force said pawl into braking ena Y gagement with the' escapement-wheel and to lock the pa-wl against the stop until the key-lever is released, the carriage-feeding mechanism being effective to return the escapement-wheel to stop position witlithe stepping dog in engagement with the successive tooth of the escapement-wheel.

In a typewriting'machine, a carriageA and a carriage-shift-frame having a rear plate, carriage-feedv mechanism including an escapement-wheel journaled on `the plate, and mechanism independent of the wheel and supportedby the platel for (3o-operating with the wheel to back-space the carriage, said mechanism including a pawl, a stop for limiting the stroke of the pawl, and means to force the pawl into braking engagement with the wheel as it engages the stop, saidstop and means supported by the plate.
5. In a typewritlng machine, carriagefeed mechanism including an escapementwheel, a back-spacing pawl positioned apart .from the wheel on a line tangential thereto .and mounted to move along said line into engagement with the teeth ofthe wheel, and
to be swung away from the wheel by the teeth thereof on the return stroke, a stop to limit the stroke of the pawl, and a camsurface to force the pawl toward the wheel as it engages the stop thereby to brake'the wheel.
