CAR CONSTRUCTION.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in car construction and the objects of the invention areto provide a reinforcing bracket adapted to be secured to the car underframe and designed to reinforce the wall structure of the car bodies.
Further objects of the invention are to provide reinforcing brackets for cars which brackets have recesses or pockets formed therein for receiving and have attached thereto the lower ends of the car posts.
Other objects of the invention are to provide reinforcing brackets for wall structures of car bodies, each bracket comprising a pair of plate members arranged at right angles to each other and formed of a single piece casting,'and provided with suitable flanges for attaching said brackets to the "car underfraine.
\Vith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of'construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a reinforcing bracket ShOWlIlg it attached in position on the car underframe. Figure 6 is a side elevational view of the strongly built in order to properly resist end shocks and crushing stresses to which such cars are subjected. To this end, I provide reinforcing brackets particularly adaptable for car end structures, which brackets are provided with fiangedportions for attaching, the bracket to the car underframe, said brackets being further provided with suitable attaching surfaces for receiving the lower ends of car; posts and offset or spaced so as to maintain said c'ar posts in proper planes relative to the car structure.
- Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings; and particularly to Figures 1 to 4, 10 indicates a car underframe having side members 11 provided with outwardly presented horizontally disposed flanges 12 and an 'end sill 14 provided with an outwardly presented horizontally disposed flange 15. A reinforcing bracket 16 is arranged at each corner of the underframe and comprises aside plate member 17 and an end plate member 18 arranged at right angles to each other and united at their meeting edges. Sideiplatel'fis provided at its top and rear end with an outwardly presented marginal flange 17 and at its front end with a vertically disposed flange 19 forming an attaching surface for one of the flanges or legs of a corner post 20 which is preferably Z-shape in cross section.
A shelf 21 is formed integral with member 17 and extends forwardly from flange 19 and forms a rest for the lower end of post 20. The lower end of plate 17 rests on the horizontal flange 12 and is attached by rivets 22 to the vertical wall of said side 11. A series of horizontally disposed gusset members 24 are formed integral with plate 17 and flange 19 and reinforce the latter. The end plate 18 is provided at its top and rear end with an outwardly projecting marginal flange 18 and the forward end of said plate is provided with laterally extending vertically disposed flange 25 to which is; adapted to be-attached the web portion of post 20. The upper ends of plates 17 and 18 are connected together and reinforced by an inwardly disposedgusset plate 26 while the intermediate portions of said plates are rein forced by a series of horizontally disposed gusset plates 26*. The lower ends of plates 17 and 18 are connected together by a gusset plate 27 which is formed integral with said upright plates and said gusset plate is secured to the inwardly disposed flanges of the side sill and end sill by rivets 28. An opening 29 is formed in the gusset plate 27.
The lower end of plate 18 rests on the horizontally disposed flange of end sill 14 and is attached to the vertical wall of said end sill by rivets 30. End plate 18 is reinforced by a vertically disposed rib 31, the lower end of which rests on flange 15 and the upper end of which merges with flange 18. Flange 18 adjacent to vertically disposed flange is provided with a recess 18 for receiving one of the flanges of corner post 20 whereby said corner post does not project bey'ond'the plane of said bracket. A. pocket 32 is formed-in flange 18 and said pocket is provided with a vertically disposed attaching plate 34 which is spaced inwardly relative to plate 18and with an outwardly projecting flange 35 arranged at right angles to plate 34.
A car post 36 is adapted to have its lower end positioned in said pocket and have its lowerend resting on a horizontally disposed ledge 37 formed integral with plate 18 and flange 18 and the legs or flanges of said post are secured to plate 34 and flange 36 by rivets 38. The edge of flange 18 is recessed or cut away as indicated at 39 to accommodate the outer flange of car post 36 and permit it to lie in a plane with the outer face of said bracket.
In the forms shown in Figures 5 to 7, a side plate member 40 has an inwardly presented marginal flange 41 and the lower end of said plate is provided with a depending flange 42 which is offset outwardly relative to said plate and the forward end of flange 42 terminates in an outwardly presented vertically disposed plate 44 which is adapted to have secured thereto one of the flanges of a corner post 45. Plate 44 is reinforced by a horizontally disposed gusset plate 46 formed integral with said plate-and flange 42. Flange 42 is secured to the vertical wall of a .side sill 47 by means of rivets 48. An end plate 49 has an inwardly presented marginal flange 50 and is provided at its lower end with a depending flange 51 which is off set relative to plate 49 and is secured to the vertical wall of'an end sill 52 by rivets 54. The forward end of flange 51 merges with the lower end of a vertically disposed outwardly projecting flange 55 which is formed integral with plate 49 and has its upper end reinforced by a horizontally disposed flange 56 formed integral with said flange and with the upper end of plate 49.
A reinforcing plate 57 is arranged intermediate plate 56 and a reinforcing plate 58, whichlatter is formed int gral with deper ing flange 51 and the lower end of flange 56. A web portion of corner post 45 is adapted to be secured to flange 55 by means of rivets 59 and the rear-wardly presented flange of said corner post is adapted to be secured to plate 44 by rivets 60.
A car post (31 is secured to plate 49 by rivets 62 and a door post (54 is secured to the rear end of plate 49 by rivets 65. The lower ends of plates 40 and 49 are united together by a horizontally disposed gusset plate 66 having an opening 67 formed therein and said gusset plate is secured to the inwardly disposed horizontal flanges of the car underframe by rivets 68.
In the modified form shown in Figures 8 to 11., car underframe 69 is provided in each corner with a rectangular opening 70 adapted to receive a rectangular casting 71 which is formed integral with a reinforcing bracket 72. Casting 71 is provided with a centrally disposed opening 74 and is attached to rails 69 and 69 of underframe 69 by rivets 7 5 and the outer faces of casting 71 are provided with pads 76 for engaging the cooperating faces of rails 69 and 69". Bracket 72 comprises a side plate member 77 having an inwardly presented marginal flange 78 and an end plate member 7 9 having an inwardly presented marginal flange 80. Thelower end of plate 77 is provided with a laterally presented vertically disposed flange 81 reinforced by a horizontally disposed rib 82 and said flange 81 is adapted to have attached thereto by means of rivets 84 a rcarwardly presented flange of a corner post 85. End plate 79 is provided at its forward end with a vertically disposed flange 86 which is adapted to have attached thereto by means of rivets 87 the web portion of corner post 85. Flange 86 is reinforced at its upper end by a horizontally disposed plate 88 formed integral therewith and with the upper end of plate 79 and is further reinforced by spaced reinforcing ribs 89.
A series of vertically disposed reinforcing ribs 90 are formed integral with end plate 79 and project inwardly therefrom and have their lower ends united with the horizontal portions 71 of casting 71. A .series of vertically disposed ribs 91 are formed integral with the horizontally presented portions 71 and the vertically disposed portion 71 of casting 71 and reinforce said casting.
An end post 92 is secured to plate '79 by rivets 94 and a post 95 is secured to the inner end of plate 79 by rivets 96.
The rear end of end plate 79 is recessed as indicated at 97 in order to'provide clearance for the platform portion 98 of underframe 69.
The reinforcing brackets of my improved construction serve to efficiently tie the car bodies to the car undei'fra1ne,'provide suitable'mjeans for an'choringthe lower ends of the posts of the car and reinforce the car against shocks and stresses. i
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, it is obvious that various minor changes in the size, shape andbofistruction of my reinforcing brackets can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A single piece reinforcing bracket for cars comprising a vertically disposed plate member having laterally disposed marginal flanges, and a horizontally disposed portion integral with the lower end of said plate and extending inwardly therefrom, a horizontally disposed inwardly projecting flange for engaging a part of a car underframe, there being vertically disposed recesses formed in said plate for receiving the lower ends of car posts.
2. A single piece reinforcing bracket for cars comprising a vertically disposed plate member having laterally projecting marginal flanges and provided at its lower end with a horizontally disposed inwardly extending portion for engaging a part of a car underframe, there being an upwardly opening pocket formed in said plate for receiving the lower end of a car post and securing it in position within the plane of said bracket.
3. A unitary reinforcing bracket for cars comprising an upright plate member provided at its top and sides with marginal flanges and having a horizontally disposed inwardly extending portion near its lower end for engaging a car underframe, there being vertically disposed face portions formed on said bracket for receiving and securing thereto members of the car wall structure.
l. A reinforcing bracket for cars comprising an upright plate member provided with a marginal flange, a horizontally dis posed inwardly projecting flange spaced from the lower end of said plate member and adapted to rest on and be secured to a,
part of a car under-frame, and vertically disposed ribs formed on said plate for reinforcing the same.
5. A single piece reinforcing bracket for cars comprising upright plate members arranged at right angles to each other and provided with marginal flanges, a gusset plate extending inwardly between said plate members, and vertically disposed face portions formed on said plate members for receiving and having secured thereto the posts of the car wall framing.
6. A single piece reinforcing bracket comprising a pair of plate members arranged at right angles to each other and provided with vertically disposed flanges for engaging a car corner post, a plurality of horizontally disposed gusset plates arranged between said vertically disposed flanges and the respective plate members for reinforcing said flanges, a gusset plate extending inwardly between the lower ends of said plate members and adapted to rest on and engage the car underframe, and vertically disposed flanges formed on the car end plate for receivin and having secured thereto the lower end of the car end post.
7. In combination with a car underframe, of a reinforcing bracket comprising an upright plate member fixed to said underframe and provided with a vertically disposed recess for receiving the lower end of a car post and secure the latter in position in plane with the outwardly projecting portions of said reinforcing bracket.
8. The combination with a car underframe, of a reinforcing bracket comprising an upright plate provided with laterally extending marginal flanges, and a horizontally disposed flange adapted to be secured to said underframe, and vertically disposed flange-s formed integral with said plate and adapted to engage and have secured thereto a car post whereby the latter is positioned in the same plane with said bracket.
9. The combination with a car underframe, of a single piece casting for corner structures of cars comprising a pair of upright members arranged at right angles to each other and attachable to the end and side members of said car underframe and provided with laterally presented marginal flanges, a horizontally disposed portion formed integral with and extending inwardly from the lower ends of said members for engaging said underframe, said members extending upwardly a suitable distance above the underframe and being adaptedto receive the lower ends of a plurality of posts of the car frame.
10. An integral reinforcing bracket for cars comprising a pair of upright plate members arranged at right angles to each other and provided with marginal flanges, a horizontally disposed member extending between the lower ends of said plate members and adapted to be attached to a car underframe, a plurality of horizontally and inwardly disposed gusset plates arranged between said plate members and above said horizontally disposed member, and a plurality of vertically disposed flanges extending outwardly from said plate member and adapted to receive the lower ends of the car posts of a car body.
11. An integral reinforcing bracket comprising a pair of vertically disposed plate members angularly disposed relative to each other, a horizontally disposed gusset plate arranged between the lower ends of said plate members and adapted to be attached to a car underframe, marginal outwardly presented fianges formedonthe top endvrear portions of said plate members, a pair of angularly arranged vertically disposed flanges formed integral with said pla-tesnear the meeting. edges thereof and adapted to receive the corner post of a car body, there being a recess formed in the flanged top portion of one of said plate members for receiving and having secured therein the lower end of a car post.
