ML. Gem Es,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEAM-FITTERS APPLIANCE.
Application filed July 2,
My invention relates to steam fitters appliances and in particular to apparatus used in the cutting, handling and fitting of pipes.
Among the objects which the present invention has in View are: The provision of a novel pipe stand and vise of portable construction and adapted for use as a tool carrier; the provision in a device of this character of means for mounting a pipe stand in service, which stand is capable of a variety of uses; the provision of an improved pipe stand and tool carrier equipped with devices for performing a variety of functions.
With these objects in view and such others as will be apparent from the description, the
invention resides in the novel construction.
combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein,
Figure 1 is a perspective of a stand constructed and set up in accordance with the principles of the invention and illustrating the cover in open position;
Figure 2 1s a central longitudinal section taken through the stand with the cover closed;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 8-8 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective of the stand illustrating the manner of securing the supporting legs.
In detail, the invention comprises a cylindrical container or casing formed of end rings 10 and 11 which have riveted or otherwise suitably secured thereto a cylindrical body 12 forming a hollow container closed by end plates 18 and 14 secured to the rings 10 and 11.
The cylindrical body 12 of the container or casing is connected at its top underneath one side edge of a bench board 15 which extends longitudinally of the container, the board being supported on the end rings 10 and 11. On the opposite side edge of the bench board, a hinged cover section 16 of the container wall is arranged and is adapted to be secured in closed position by means of a suitable locking device such as a pad lock 17 arranged over a hasp 18 hinged to the edge of the cover section.
At one end of the bench block 15, and extending beyond the end of the container, is a pipe vise 19 of conventional construction and provided with the chain 20 usual in such devices. The vise 19 is supported on a plate 21 carried by the end of the bench block and 1926. Serial N0. 120,169.
extending there beyond. At the opposite end of the bench block is secured a pipe rest 22 of conventional construction and arranged in alinement with the pipe vise at the opposite end of the block. Located between the pipe rest 22 and the center of the bench block is an eye bolt 23, suitably anchored provided with a pipe ending ring 24: arranged for free movement Arranged within the container on one end wall as at 14, is a bracket 28 adapted to support an oil can as best shown in Figure 2. The interior of the container may be fitted as desired for the reception of various tools and implements, all of which may be locked securely within the container by means of the pad lock 17 when the cover section 16 is closed. At each end of the device the body 12 is recessed to provide for engagement around the lugs 25, as best illustrated in Figure 1.
The present invention presents a simple device which is adapted for use as a pipe stand and work bench whenever the leg sections 27 are fitted within the sockets 26. In. transporting the device from place to place, the leg sections are removed and one of them may be inserted through the bender ring 24 resting in the pipe rest 22 eing secured in the vise 19 end, as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 2, whereby the pipe section will serve as a handle for tl e container, the disposition of the bender ring serving to anchor one end of the handle. By the particular arrangement of elementsas described, the cover section 16 is disposed at one side of the bench block 15 and the cover may be opened with out interfering 111 any way with work arranged upon the bench block. While in illustrating this practical embodiment of my invention, I have shown and described certain details entering into the construction and operation thereof, I desire to be understood that the invention is not to be limited thereby, but that any desired changes and in the structural the scope of the modifications may be made details as will fall Within invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A pipe stand comprising a bench block, a pipe vise arranged at one end of said blocln a pipe rest arranged at the opposite end 01" said block, a casing attached beneath said block, said casing having a hinged cover portion having cooperative locking relation with an element arranged on said bench blocl-t, sockets formed on said casing at a plurality of points, leg members insertible in said sockets for supporting said casing and bench block in service position, and means carried by said bench block for anchoring one end of one of said leg members whereby said member may be used as a handle for transporting the stand.
2. A portable pipe stand comprising the combination with a substantially cylindrical -ontainer, a bench block attached to the top of said container, a cover hinged to said container means on said block for locking said cover in closed position. means on said block for retaining a handle member thereabovc in spaced relation, and means formed on the Walls of said container for supporting said container in service position as a pipe stand.
In a pipe stand, a hollow cylindrical easing, end rings in said casing,integral lugs formed on said rings and extending radially through said casing from opposite sides thereot, said lugs being "formed with sockets for reception of leg members, a bench block supported on said end rings at the ,top of said casing, a plurality of pipe Working implements arranged on said bench block, a hinged portion in one Wall of said casing to forma cover, and cooperativemeans carriedby said hinged portion and bench block for retaining said cover in closed position.
In testimony whereof lafiix my signature.
VALTER L. GRAVES.
