LILIAN A. PHALON, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
. COMBINED TRAY AND 'J'.AIBLIEL` Application iled March 29, 1926. Serial No. 98,072.
The object of this invention isv to provide a combined tra y and table that can be used as a. tray to carry meals to a bedand can thenl be usedas a table, the legs of which rest ou the bed and support the meal at suitable height above the bed.
This and other objects of the invention will be fully illustrated in the drawings, described in the speci lic-ation and` pointedout in the claims at the end thereof.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of the combined tray and table, the section being taken on line 1X, lx oi' Figure 2.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the com` bined tray and table.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of one end of the combined tray and table7 a portion thereof being broken away.
Figure 4 is aside elevation of one corner of the table.
Figure 5 is a bottom plan vie-w of the metal work or hinge parts of the table.
In `the drawings like reference numerals indicate like parts. i
In the drawings reference numeral 1 indi- Cates the table top Ior tray which may be of any suitable dimension. This top comprises a plate 2 preferably made of wood having a suitable cloth 3 spread vrontop thereof on top of which is placed a glass plate 4. This combination is surrounded by strips 5, 6 and 7 which are fastened thereto in a` suit-able manner and which strips have projecting edges or flanges that engage over the glass plate and hold it securely in place. On each end of the table is provided a metal plate 10 which is provided with stationary lugs 11 and .12 which extend outwardly therefrom and on the other side is provided with stationary lugs 13 and 14 which extend inwardly therefrom. The lug 14 is directly opposite the lug 12 and the lug 13 is directly opposite the lug 11. See Figure 5. Between the stationary lugs 11 and 12 is pivoted the U shaped handle 15 which is provided with two swinging cams or lugs 16 which are a little more than at right angles to the handle. Between the stationary lugs 13 and 14 is pivot'ed a swinging metal plate 17 to which is attached the legs 18 of the table. At the outer ends of this plate `17 are provided lugs 2O and 21 which swing therewith. These lugs engage the pivot pins that pass through the stationary lugs 13 and 14 so that the plate 17 and legs are thereby mounted to swing between the lugs 13 and 14.- Onfthe lug 21,.'as shown in Figure 17 two concave faces are providedatright angles with each other. These concave faces are adaptedto engage with and be engaged by a similar convex face provided on the lugs 16 connected withthe handle 15 when the legs .of the table arevfolded up under thetable as shown at the left of Figure 1 or. whenthe legs of the table extend down from the table, as shown in the right of Figure 1. When the legs of the table are in either of lthese two positions andthe handle -is placed ,in the full line position shown inFigure 1 vthe legs are locked in either of the two, positions.
' The swinging cams or lugs 16 are provided with eccentric faces which grip the concave faces when the handles are raised up into [he full line position of Figure 1 and lock the lugs 21 in the position shown and take up all lost motion therein. The legs can be changed from one position to the other by moving the handles to the dotted line position shown at the left of Figure 1 in which position the lug 21 is released permitting the legs to swing to its other position. By moving both handles to the dotted line position as shown in vFigure 1, the legs can be. folded up under the table and will be locked'in such position when the handles are moved tothe full line position. W'ith the legs held `up under the table, the combination can be used as a. tra-y and carried by the handles. The handles serve to lock the legs up against the table. If it is desired to use the tray as a table, the handles can be moved to the dotted line position and the legs can then be turned down at right angles to the plate after which the handles can be moved up again thus locking the legs in their extended position wherein the combination can be used as a table. In like manner the legs can be changed back and forth as often as may be desired so that the outfit can be used either as a tray or as a table.
To prevent the handles 15 from automatically unlocking the legs when pressure is accidentally applied to the handles, a locking latch 25 is provided. This latch is suitably pivoted on the lug 12 and is provided with hook 26 that is adapted to engage a pin 27 provided on the side of the handle 15. When the handle 15 is raised the hooked shape portion'of the latch engages the pin 27 and prevents the handle from being accidentally pushed down when pressure is applied thereon. The handle 28 of the latch extends to one side behind the handle l5 and when it is desired to unlock the handles 15 all that is necessary is to use one of the lingers of the hand that grip the handle and raise the latch 25 thru its handle 28 thus disengaging the hook of the latch from the pin and allowing the handle 15 to be rocked down to unlock the legs.
The latch is provi-ded with a fiat surface 29 that allows the latch to be raised to engage the pin 27 but prevents it from rocking downwardly with the handle l5 when the handle l5 has been released.
I claim:
l. In a combined serving tray and table, the combination of a tray or table top, a pair of legs mounted to swing on the under side of said tray one near each end of said tray or table top, a locking bar carried by each of said pair of legs, a pair of concave cam surfaces provided in the periphery of said locking bar, a pair of handles mounted to swing on said tray or table top one at each end thereof, a cam carried by each of said handles and adapted to swing therewith, said cams being convex and eccentric to said cam surfaces on said locking bars, and being adapted to engage either of said cam snrfaces on the swinging of said handles and lock said locking bar and said legs in either of two predetermined positions, a locking lever mounted adjacent to each of said handles, said locking lever being adapted to engage said handle and lock said handle against movement in one direction.
2. In a combined serving tray and table, the combination of a tray or table top, a handle for carrying said tray or table top pivoted at each end thereof, a supporting leg pivoted at each end of said tray or table top, a locking member provided on each of said legs and a locking member provided on each of said handles, said locking members being adapted to cooperate with each other to hold said legs in either a vertical or horizontal position on said tray when said handles are placed in a position for carrying said tray or table top.
3. In a combined serving tray and table, the combination of a tray or table top, a handle for carrying said tray or table top pivoted at each end of said tray or table top, a leg pivoted at each end of said tray or table top for supporting said tray or table top, a locking cam carried by each of said handles and a pair of locking cams carried by each of said legs, the loc-king cam of said handles being adapted to engage one of the pair of locking cams of said legs when moved to a rigid position for carrying said tray and being adapted to release this locking cam of said leg when moved to a nonrigid position or swinging position.
1i. In a combined serving tray and table, the combination of a tray or table, a handle for carrying said tray pivoted at each end thereof, a leg for supporting said tray pivoted on the under side at each end thereof, a locking cam provided on each of said legs, the engagement of said cam of said handle with the engagement of the locking cam of said leg being adapted to hold said leg and said handle rigid with relation to cach other and to said tray to allow said handle to be used for carrying said tray while keeping said leg locked in a predetermined position on the 'under side of said tray.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
